  3. 3. 360 Leader - Leading Across 360 Leader Leading Across What distinguishes a merely competent leader from one who goes to the next level? Competent leaders can lead follows. They can find, gather, recruit and enlist them. This is no easy task, but a leader who can only lead followers is limited. To make it to the next level of leadership, a leader must be able to lead leaders – not just those below them, but those above and alongside them.
  4. 4. 360 Leader - Leading Across 360 Leader Leading Across Caring - Take an interest in people People always move towards someone who increases them and away from anyone who decreases them. Learning - Get to know them. Managers tend to treat everyone the same way, a leader tends to treat everyone differently. Appreciating – Respect people. It is impossible to succeed in any relationship if respect is not at the core. Contributing – Add to people. You walk alongside them and seek ways to add value to them. How can I make them better? Few things increase the credibility of leaders than adding value to those around them. Verbalizing – Affirm people. Affirm means to ‘make firm’. So if I affirm good qualities in you I am making firm in your mind those things that you do well. Leading –Influence people. Succeeding – Winning with people. Great leaders don’t use people so that they can win. They lead people so that they can all win together.
  5. 5. 360 Leader - Leading Across 360 Leader Leading Across There’s nothing wrong with competition. The problem is that many leaders end up competing against their peers in a way that hurts them and the team. In a healthy working environment there is both competition and teamwork. The issue is to know when each is appropriate. Completing your teammates is a completely different mindset. Scarcity mindset Me first Destroy trust Think win-lose Single thinking (my good ideas) Excluding others “A true friend is who hears and understand when you share your deepest feelings. He supports you when you are struggling: he corrects you, gently and with love, when you err; and he forgives you when you fail. A true friend prods you to personal growth, stretches you to your full potential. And most amazing of all, he celebrates your successes as if they were his own.” Richard Huxley How many true friends do you have? For many it’s quite a shocking process to go through. And I am not talking about your facebook friends. I mean real friends. I hope that all of you have at least one. And if you don’t… get a dog.
  6. 6. 360 Leader - Leading Across 360 Leader Leading Across “Playing politics” is changing who you appear to be or what you normally do to gain an advantage with whoever currently has power. Two main paths to get ahead in organizations. One is to do the work. The other is to work an angle. It’s the difference between production and politics. The bottom line is that people who might be called “political” are rules by a desire to get ahead rather than a desire for excellence, productivity, teamwork or consistency. Whatever values and skills they have are secondary to ambition. And while they sometimes appear to get ahead, their gains are always temporary. In the long run, integrity, consistency and productivity always pay off – in better teamwork and a clearer conscience.
  7. 7. 360 Leader - Leading Across 360 Leader Leading Across Avoid Gossip It has been said that great people talk about ideas, average people talk about themselves and small people, talk about others. Stay away from petty arguments Stand up for what’s right, not just for what’s popular Look at all sides of the argument Before you have an argument with your boss take a good look at both sides. His side and the outside. Don’t protect your turf Politics if often about power. Political leaders want to protect whatever is theirs because they don’t want to lose power. If they lose power, they might not win. And winning is their primary motivation. People who want to win at all costs, fight and scrap to keep everything that belongs to them. They fight to keep their budget. They fight for office space. They guard their ideas. They hoard office supplies. If it belongs to them, they protect it.
  8. 8. 360 Leader - Leading Across 360 Leader Leading Across 1. Expand your inner circle • Start with your inner circle. Those closest to you. To get outside your comfort zone, why not start with those within your comfort zone. Every friend has a friend you don’t know. 2. Expand beyond your expertise 3. Expand beyond your strengths 360° leaders listen to many ideas 360° leaders protect creative people and their ideas Ideas are fragile things. An idea can be stifled by a yawn. Killed by a sneer. Stabbed by a quip and worried to death by a frown. 360° leaders don’t take rejection personally
  9. 9. 360 Leader - Leading Across 360 Leader Leading Across Nothing would get done at all if a man waited until he could do something so well that no one could find fault with it. John henry Cardinal Newman Admit your faults Ask for advice. Nothing makes people feel more important than being asked for their advice Worry less about what others think. And by the way, whilst you are worrying about what they are thinking about you, they are thinking about what you are thinking about them. So you would be thinking about them thinking about you thinking about what they are thinking about them. If your head hasn’t exploded yet, it will if you continue to worry about it. If you want everyone to like you, you won’t be a good leader. One of the great things about being imperfect is the joy that it brings to others. When you get around a perfect person doesn’t that just bug you? It’s much better to know you’re imperfect and laugh at yourself. And please do, laugh at yourself… everyone else is. The Learning principle. Every person we meet has the potential to teach us something.
