Using FourSquare for Business Give the Mayor his/her Due: Imagine the local pizza palace declaring that on any given day…if you are the Mayor of their palace, you and your party dine for free.  (Who wouldn’t love to announce that to your friends or the kid’s baseball team?) Check in Specials: Using the Tips area…the local watering hole could offer happy hour specials, buy a beer, get one free specials etc.

The Endless Simmer writer produced a Google Map showing the restaurants in the 14th Street corridor that were open and closed throughout the weekend, and he released updated versions of the document through Twitter. By Sunday, more than 40 restaurants were reported to be open, according to his map.

  3. “broadcasting” originated as a farming term for broadly casting seeds – it was picked up in tv and radio, and is perhaps even more relevant today in web 2.0
  4. Approach web 2.0 as you would any marketing initiative: with a plan and measurable goals. Measure through urlshorteners which do link tracking, google analytics, google alerts (which you can set for blogs, news, etc).
  5. Remember: “Joy of Use” is one of the key principles of Web 2.0 – it’s supposed to be fun! Also, make your message foisgras – not spam!
  6. Creating a personal page is the first step. Use the mullet technique: business in the front, party in the back.
  7. There are 160 characters in a text message – the 140 in a tweet is so that they can have room for your name.
  8. Avoid underscores because they are difficult to type on a cell phone. You want a username that is representative of your organization and a full name that adds personality and a “face to a name” – however, you don’t want to be too tied to one person because of turnover, so you can just change your full name and keep the username.
  9. Blogs are a very easy to set up, easy to make posts and free! This blog is made through blogger – which is free through google. You can set up rss feeds which people can subscribe to and they will be notified of your new posts in their inbox – you can also set up the rss feed through your website. A blog is great alternative for getting info out if you don’t have the best website and/or your website offers little flexibility. They also have high search engine optimization and can really boost your google rankings. Have the person blogging be the person with the most to say – the most excited about your message. Empower and enable key players to help you get the word out through web 2.0! Wordpress is another option – a blog publishing software installed to your website by your webmaster.
  10. The key to web 2.0 is to be open, candid, accessible and relatable ~ a human face and voice for your organization.
  11. Next to twitter, this is the most exciting emerging technology. These maps are FREE – easy to create, easy to search and easy to embed. The Atlanta Community Food Bank is using it to map out more than 800 community partners to see how they can better allocate resources. Also, includes RSS feed. You get the full functionality of google maps without having to do any of the coding – let the website do it for you!
