Injuries associated with sports participation.  Session 2.1
Aim and Objectives Aim: By the end of this session students will explain some of the ways injuries can occur  in sporting situations.  Objectives: Identify different injuries that can occur in sport Describe how these injuries can affect sport. Explain the effects these can have sporting performance.
Sporting injuries Common sporting injuries involving bat and balls  Injuries per 1000 hours played.  Alpine skiing (8)  Rowing machine exercise (6)  Treadmill walking or jogging (6)  Resistance training with weight machines (4)  Resistance training with free weights (4)  Outdoor cycling (3.5)  Stationary cycle exercise (2)
Sporting injuries.  Horrific Sporting Injuries Think piece. (Groups of 3) Each person will be given 1 minute to talk to the rest of the group what they think sporting injuries is.  After each have spoken, the group will be given 1 more minute to bring their individual ideas.  These will then be shared with the rest of the group.
Sports injuries are injuries that occur to athletes participating in sporting events. In many cases, these types of injuries are due to overuse of a part of the body when participating in a certain activity. Sports injuries the damage or wound of trauma as caused by playing sports. Causes of sports injury.  What are the common causes of sporting injuries? Come up with a list.  Overloading  Intrinsic factors Extrinsic factors Overuse  Alignment  Intensity Effect of leavers Gravity  Resistance.
Intrinsic and extrinsic factors.  Intrinsic factors Extrinsic factors These refer to a person’s physical characteristics. Example: - an individual’s body type or size could make them more prone to injuries.  These are caused by an external forces (Outside of the body). Example: - Equipment, inappropriate footwear.
Intrinsic factors Age Performance How often a person gets injured. How quick they recover. Body type Endomorph Mesomorph Ectomorph
Extrinsic factors.  Surfaces: Running or participating in sporting activities on different surfaces.  Shoes: Injuries can be caused by incorrect footwear.  Equipment: Which is inappropriate for the activity, broken/faulty or worn equipment.
Task. From the intrinsic and extrinsic factors on the previous slides, try and define the other areas. ((IN) Lack of flexibility, Muscle imbalance. (EX) Training Principles, Environmental conditions) Working in groups, discuss the reasons why you think each of the intrinsic and extrinsic factors given could potentially cause a sporting injury. (Give an example for each.)
Alignment. Correct posture and body alignment is crucial not just for sports people but for everyone else too.  Poor alignment may result in frequent injuries. They won’t be able to perform to their best due to restrictions in their movements.
Over-use  Can you think of any sports that can results in this type of injury.  Racquet sports, Golf.  This is one of the most common causes of sports injuries. Physical demands of some sports require the athlete constantly use specific but repetitive movements.   These injuries tend to be sports specific and come on as a gradually increasing pain,  This associated with repetitive movements.
Training at the wrong intensity – on e that is to high. Can lead to injury.  This can also be linked to poor alignment because the body has to compensate for the extra work. i.e. arching the back.  Intensity
Session re-cap In groups of three you will be given a different type of injury.  With this you need to describe what it is and its affect it can have on sporting performance.
