Expectations (formerly known as Syllabus) English 3 Class Expectations Teacher: Mrs. Genny Grindley Room: S6 E-mail: ggrindley@usd259.netPhone: 973-5584 Classroom Goals Students will use critical thinking skills to analyze various pieces of grade-level appropriate literature. Students will use the writing process to compose a variety of writing assignments. Students will actively contribute to large and small group activities. Guidelines for Success Classroom Rules Be Present. Come to class every day that you are not sick. Be Prompt. Arrive to class on time. Students who are tardy more than 2 times will be sent to a Holding Room in the cafeteria. Be Prepared. Bring a pen/pencil, your notebook and book to class each day. Be Productive. Participate in classroom activities and complete all of your homework. Be Polite. Respect the people and property of South High School.

7. Classroom Activities & ACHIEVE ACHIEVE is an acronym that identifies the behavioral expectations for students during various classroom activities. For this class, ACHIEVE behavioral expectations have been established for the following classroom activities: Teacher-Led Learning Independent Student Work Cooperative Group Work Testing ACHIEVE posters for each of these classroom activities are posted in the classroom. Students receive a grade each chapter/unit based upon how well they follow the expectations outlined for each classroom activity.

9. Homework Policy In this class, homework will be assigned almost every class period. Homework includes any assignments that are completed outside of regular class time. Homework contributes toward building self-discipline, responsibility and life-long learning. It is a reflection of the classroom work which: Enhances the academic growth of the student. Prepares the student for the subject lessons. Reinforces concepts and objectives taught in the classroom. Develops independent study skills to foster initiative and self direction. The actual time required to complete assignments will vary with each student’s study habits, academic skills and selected course load. Students needing help completing their homework are encouraged to ask questions, get help during Titan Time or attend Pass the Class.

10. South High School Late Work Policy For each excused absence, students will be given 1 additional class period to make up missed assignments or to turn in assignments that were due during their absence. Any other assignments that are turned in late will be graded according to the following guidelines. Assignment is turned in…Assignment is worth… Up to 2 weeks late 80% of earned grade After 2 weeks late 50% of earned grade *After the Late Work Cutoff Date 0% *Based on the amount of time needed to grade late assignments, there will be a Late Work Cutoff Date before the end of each grading period (see below).

11. Grading Period †Late Work Cutoff Date 1st Nine Weeks Thursday, October 6 2nd Nine Weeks (1st Semester) Tuesday, December 13 3rd Nine Weeks Friday, March 9 4th Nine Weeks (2nd Semester) Tuesday, May 15 †Cutoff dates for tests, essays and other large projects/assignments will be determined on an individual teacher basis. These dates may be either before or after the cutoff dates listed. Any such changes must be included in that teacher’s syllabus.

12. Classroom Procedures Entering the Classroom Students are not allowed to bring food or drink into the classroom (bottled water is ok). These items should be consumed outside of the classroom. Students who bring food or drink into the classroom will be asked to take them to the hallway or to throw them away. As soon as you enter the classroom you should begin working on the posted bellwork (quick write, grammar exercise, etc.). Tardy to Class Students who enter the classroom after the bell rings are tardy. Students who are tardy more than 2 times in a semester must report to a Holding Room in the cafeteria. Supplies for Class You will need to have a 3-ring binder (I suggest a 1 inch binder) or a 3-pronged folder for this class. This is where you will keep completed assignments as well as incomplete ones. Students should bring their binder/folder, a pen or pencil, paper, and their supplemental book (when appropriate) to class each day. Students who do not bring these supplies are still expected to work in class. You may barter for a pencil/pen from Mrs. Grindley or you may borrow a pen or pencil from another student. Finding out Daily Assignments Each day I go over the list of activities for that class period. This list is also posted on the School Fusion.

13. Classroom Procedures Turning in Assignments Assignments must be complete to be graded. Incomplete assignments will be returned to the student. Any assignment completed after the original due date will be counted late. Completed assignments may be turned in to the assignment basket on the file cabinet by the teacher’s desk. Returning Assignments Graded assignments will be handed back during class. These need to be kept in your binder/folder. Finding out Grade Status Students will be shown their grades at least once each week by the teacher. Students and parents may also access grades by using either Student Assist or Parent Assist. Student Responsibilities after an Absence Students who are absent can obtain a list of activities or assignments that were assigned or collected during class in the “What You Missed” binder. Electronic copies of notes, reading assignments, and homework assignments are also posted on School Fusion. Students who do not have access to School Fusion should obtain missing assignments during Titan Time or before/after class. Ending Class Students should return any supplies or textbooks to their appropriate place and be seated in their assigned seats before the end of class. Once all students are seated and the bell has rung, students will be dismissed.

14. Consequences for Classroom Rule Violations If you violate a classroom rule, or fail to follow an ACHIEVE behavioral expectation, you may be assigned a consequence. Depending on the frequency and severity of the misbehavior, you may receive one or more of the following consequences: Loss of behavior point(s) Parental contact Change in seating assignment Time owed after class Office referral

15. Additional Information Students who either copy/cheat, or represent themselves as copying/cheating, will be required to complete the assignment again OR be required to complete a replacement assignment. 16. Summer Creation-Create Pick a medium (clay, pipe cleaners, or paper and utensils) You have 10 minutes to create a visual representation of your summer It can represent a portion of or the whole summer It can represent a person, place, thing, or experience It can be literal or figurative Go!

17. Summer Creation-Explain Without conferring with each other (no discussions), you have 8 minutes to write down a description of your creation and an explanation. I am not assigning a sentence length; I want you to write for 8 full minutes. If you run out of things to say, write about your vacation (or lack thereof), food, the weather, anything school appropriate.

18. Summer Creation-Share You have 3 minutes to share with a partner (make sure everyone has a partner). You may have to make a new friend here. Listen actively, ask questions for clarification, gain info to present to the whole class.

19. Summer Creation-Share You have 2 minutes to present to the class your partner’s creation and explanation.

20. Time Capsule Letter Follow the instructions on the letter DO NOT SEAL YOUR ENVELOPE!
