WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

Induction
Apprentices
• You need to understand as an employee of a
company you have rights and responsibilities
for your own and others Health and Safety
• You are both employed and a student working
toward the completion of your framework.
• You must abide by your Company's Health and
Safety Regulations as well as
and Safety Law

Your Work Place
• It is vital that you as an Apprentice are Healthy
and Safe in your workplace as well as in
College.
• We are committed to ensuring this and before
you started your apprenticeship and we risk
assessed your work place for potential
hazards. As well as identifying learning
opportunities to improve your skills
and knowledge.

Your Work Place
• As part of your apprenticeship
your assessor will review Health
and Safety Practices as well as
your learning and understanding
in this area.
• This induction course starts this
process and you are required to
complete a quiz at the end to
assess your learning.

Being Safe at Work
The Health and Safety Executive reports that:
• Over 200 people are killed at work each year!
• There are 150,000 non fatal injuries are
REPORTED each year
• Approximately 2 MILLION suffer from work
related illness.
• In many cases these could have been
prevented.

The LAW!
• The main law with regard to Health and Safety at
Work is the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
• This law states both employers and employees
have rights and responsibilities.
• Breaking this law could result in prosecution, fines
or even prison
• Therefore you need to be aware of your
responsibilities and act within the law
• NOT KNOWING IS NO DEFENCE !

Your employer must
• Make the work place free from risks
• Making sure plant and machinery are safe and that
safe systems of work are set & followed
• Ensure all articles are & substances are moved,
stored and used safely
• Health and Safety risk assessments have taken place
and action has been taken to reduce identified risks
• Produce a health and safety policy

Employers
Have a duty :
• To ensure the Health, Safety and Welfare of
their employees
• Have a duty to conduct their undertakings in
such a way to ensure that people who are not
their employees are not exposed to health &
safety risks
• “so far as is reasonably practical”
Induction
YOU – as an EMPLOYEE
• YOU must co-operate with your employer on
all matters of Health and Safety
For example following safety instructions on
when operating machinery
• YOU must not put yours and others (including
colleagues, visitors and customers) Health and
Safety at risk
For example blocking fire escapes

YOU – as an EMPLOYEE
• YOU MUST NOT tamper or interfere with
health and safety equipment that has been
provided
For example removing a warning sign or
removing a safety guard
• YOU MUST NOT attempt to fix any broken or
damaged equipment
For example don’t fix anything!
Report it

YOU – as an EMPLOYEE
• YOU must report all accidents and near misses
to prevent further harm
For example if you injure yourself or come
close to injuring yourself i.e. a tripping hazard
Remember it is YOUR responsibility
To take care of the health and safety of themselves
and others who may be affected by their acts and
omissions (what you do and don’t do!)

Things we don’t ever want to see!

Blocked or propped up fire exits
Standing on chairs or boxes to reach high items
Inappropriately stored or overloaded shelves
Apprentices messing about (horse play, practical
jokes, bullying, harassment)
• Ignoring safety signs
• Not wearing protective equipment
• Using machinery without training or express
permission

What we do want to see!
• Trained apprentices who are role models of
excellent Health and Safety practice both in
and out of the work place.
• Apprentices who are proud of what they have
achieved
• Apprentices who can use the skills they have
learnt and practiced while on the course

Last thing to remember about the LAW
• It’s the law and if you break it you - are
committing an offense
• If in doubt ask!
• Its not only what you do its also what you
don’t!

Your Work Place • It is vital that you as an Apprentice are Healthy and Safe in your workplace as well as in College. • We are committed to ensuring this and before you started your apprenticeship and we risk assessed your work place for potential hazards. As well as identifying learning opportunities to improve your skills and knowledge. Induction
  • 4. Your Work Place • As part of your apprenticeship your assessor will review Health and Safety Practices as well as your learning and understanding in this area. • This induction course starts this process and you are required to complete a quiz at the end to assess your learning. Induction

Being Safe at Work The Health and Safety Executive reports that: • Over 200 people are killed at work each year! • There are 150,000 non fatal injuries are REPORTED each year • Approximately 2 MILLION suffer from work related illness. • In many cases these could have been prevented. Induction

The LAW! • The main law with regard to Health and Safety at Work is the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 • This law states both employers and employees have rights and responsibilities. • Breaking this law could result in prosecution, fines or even prison • Therefore you need to be aware of your responsibilities and act within the law • NOT KNOWING IS NO DEFENCE ! Your employer must • Make the work place free from risks • Making sure plant and machinery are safe and that safe systems of work are set & followed • Ensure all articles are & substances are moved, stored and used safely • Health and Safety risk assessments have taken place and action has been taken to reduce identified risks • Produce a health and safety policy Induction
  • 8. Employers Have a duty : • To ensure the Health, Safety and Welfare of their employees • Have a duty to conduct their undertakings in such a way to ensure that people who are not their employees are not exposed to health & safety risks • “so far as is reasonably practical” Induction

YOU – as an EMPLOYEE • YOU must co-operate with your employer on all matters of Health and Safety For example following safety instructions on when operating machinery • YOU must not put yours and others (including colleagues, visitors and customers) Health and Safety at risk For example blocking fire escapes Induction
  • 10. YOU – as an EMPLOYEE • YOU MUST NOT tamper or interfere with health and safety equipment that has been provided For example removing a warning sign or removing a safety guard • YOU MUST NOT attempt to fix any broken or damaged equipment For example don’t fix anything! Report it Induction

YOU – as an EMPLOYEE • YOU must report all accidents and near misses to prevent further harm For example if you injure yourself or come close to injuring yourself i.e. a tripping hazard Remember it is YOUR responsibility To take care of the health and safety of themselves and others who may be affected by their acts and omissions (what you do and don’t do!) Things we don’t ever want to see! • • • • Blocked or propped up fire exits Standing on chairs or boxes to reach high items Inappropriately stored or overloaded shelves Apprentices messing about (horse play, practical jokes, bullying, harassment) • Ignoring safety signs • Not wearing protective equipment • Using machinery without training or express permission Induction

What we do want to see! • Trained apprentices who are role models of excellent Health and Safety practice both in and out of the work place. • Apprentices who are proud of what they have achieved • Apprentices who can use the skills they have learnt and practiced while on the course Induction
  • 14. Last thing to remember about the LAW • It’s the law and if you break it you - are committing an offense • If in doubt ask! • Its not only what you do its also what you don’t! Induction
