3. History
• November 2011 - a security operation - hundreds of police and military patrolled the
streets of Rocinha to try and find any rampant drug dealers and bring government
control to the neighbourhood
• In 2009 construction began on a new wall to limit Rocinha. This plan was highly
criticized, but later accepted after it began to respect some demands from the
community. It will be surrounded by an ecological park with structures for tourism,
leisure, education and sports activities.
• Both murders and violent crime are down since the UPPs began operating in 2008.
However, this improvement comes at a price. There are reports of police abuse,
including profiling favela residents as ‘de facto criminals’, endemic corruption,
excessively violent tactics, torture and suppressing the lawful communication of
protestors and journalists.
• October 17, 2009—14 people die, eight are injured in rival gang warfare. Gun-battles
move into non-gang territory. Three police officers die.
4. Opportunities of living there
• Rocinha hosts all essential amenities such as banks, supermarkets, restaurants and
thousands of private enterprises dominating the busy streets and alleys, this
means that there are lots of jobs available.
• The houses are now more commonly built 4 or more stories high and made out of
concrete, this means more people can live in sustainable standards.
• Violence is an everyday occurrence
• More than 6,000 people are killed each year, a rate comparable to a war zone.
• Lots of people killed due to cross-fires.
5. World Cup effects on Rochinha
• At least 19,000 families have been moved to
make way for roads, renovated stadiums, an
athletes' village, an ambitious redevelopment
of the port area and other projects that have
been launched or accelerated to prepare the
city for the world's two biggest sporting events.
