1. At school I achieved 5 GCSE’s over a pass grade, and my highest grade was in Graphics at a
B. This was the course I was most enthusiastic about, and I feel it complements the rest of
my later achievements. At college I completed an EPQ achieving an A, I wrote my essay on
the history of UK dance music (a topic I'm very passionate about). The skills I developed on
the EPQ course that cover journalism was reporting and researching. I covered a wide range
of notable points in the formation of this music scene. I feel that the systematic process of
researching, analysing, developing and referencing gave me a great feel for how a reporter
may create a piece of writing.
From studying my EPQ I felt confident in my path as a journalist and decided to pursue a
media course at York College to finalise my portfolio for uni. The first year of the course
involved various projects covering all aspects of media production. The project from year 1
that I think benefited me the most regarding journalism was my final major project of a
documentary. This involved very extensive research covering existing products and
audience. I believe the audience research benefited my journalism skills a lot, as I
networked on social media to find people involved in my docs topic, then pitched them
interviews. I believe my initial project this year, a fanzine, has been incredibly beneficial for
journalism. I have been entirely captivated by the fanzine scene and the process of making
my own has made me very enthusiastic about my path in journalism. The production
process has given me great skills for journalism, I now know how to structure all publication
types with confidence and how to write in a reporter's style. I have learnt how to use
InDesign and photoshop with this project and I feel confident I can graphically design most
genres and styles of publication. Later in the year I will be working with clients, to produce
some form of media for their company. I believe this will give me great knowledge for my
path into the industry later and allow me to experience the industry as a professional would.
I hope to take a journalism course at university as I feel my personal life as a semi-
established musician who actively operates on the music scene goes hand in hand with
journalism. My passion is music and the culture surrounding it, and I’ve based virtually all
my projects in my media course on this. I've found that when working on projects regarding
my passion, my enthusiasm is endless. This gives me great reassurance that when I can base
my future projects at university on my own ideas, my work ethic and interest in the music
industry can be my motivation. My main reasons for wanting to do journalism is to further
my knowledge and involvement in the Uk music scene, but also to get the opportunity to
learn about areas of journalism I’m yet to explore. I love to tell stories, and find that I can
choose a topic, get entirely captivated and then turn that into a piece of work. In the long
run I hope to get a job at a media company focussing on music, so I can use my knowledge
combined with my talents in storytelling and reporting.
The reason I believe journalism is the best suited career path for me is my creative flare in a
range of media areas and my ability to captivate an audience with my writing. I credit a lot
of my success to my online persona, and the media that I release on that. I often produce
my own music, videos and promotional content. My knowledge of the culture, and ability to
present this visually has resulted in my involvement in lots of creative projects outside of
education. I have choreographed and managed photoshoots for clothing brands, created
2. promotional material for clubs and filmed and edited several music videos. In the future I
hope to get a position at a media company that targets the youth sector of our society.
