SEA CEPTOR
ALL WEATHER AIR DEFENCE
WEAPON SYSTEM
SEA
Sea Ceptor is part of MBDA’s CEPTOR family of next-generation, all-weather, air defence weapon
systems that has application to Sea, Land and Air environments.
Through the use of new advanced technologies, Sea Ceptor provides complete protection against
all known and projected air targets. The weapon system is now in full-scale development for the
UK MOD as the principal air defence capability for the Royal Navy’s Type 23 and Type 26 frigates.
Sea Ceptor will protect both the host ship and high value units in the local area. The Weapon
System has the capability to intercept and thereby neutralise the full range of current and future
threats including combat aircraft and the new generation of supersonic anti-ship missiles.
Capable of multiple channels of fire, the system will also counter saturation attacks.
Sea Ceptor will enter service in the middle of the current decade to replace VL Seawolf for the
remaining life of the Type 23s, after which it will equip the Royal Navy’s Type 26 Global Combat
Ship. The Sea Ceptor Defence System will deliver significantly greater capability at a reduced cost.
• High rate of fire against multiple simultaneous targets
• Soft vertical launch technology for minimum launch
signature and high performance
• Compact missile allows for multiple weapon fit in
limited spaces
• Compatible with any surveillance sensor for targeting
• Vertical launch enabling 360° coverage in all launch sectors
• Wide air target set plus the ability to engage small
naval craft
• All-weather active RF seeker
• Two way data link
• Designed for third party targeting
• Minimal logistics support and maintenance required

A key design driver behind Sea Ceptor lies in its simple integration philosophy. The weapon
system can be easily retrofitted into a wide range of platforms for example, ranging from 50m
OPVs to frigates and destroyers. Two main features provide this flexibility: Firstly, the use of “soft-
launch” weapon technology for a highly scaleable and compact launch system that can easily be
installed in a number of below and above deck locations. Secondly, Sea Ceptor can be targeted
from the ship’s existing surveillance radar or other track source and therefore does not require the
dedicated fire control radars upon which semi-active systems depend.
Sea Ceptor will operate from the SYLVER and Mk41 launchers using a quad-pack configuration
to maximise packing density or for smaller ships, various flexible canister configurations are
available. The Soft Vertical Launch technique reduces system mass and eases installation onto a
variety of platforms. The Command & Control System is designed to enable rapid integration
with both new and existing naval combat systems where they are used.
Sea Ceptor does not require a dedicated Tracking Radar and instead utilises ship target indication
data provided by its surveillance radar to offer high levels of protection in both open and littoral
environments. This represents an acquisition cost saving in addition to ongoing support costs.
CAMM will replace the Royal Navy’s currently in-service VL Seawolf missile, to provide a greater
capability for a reduced cost.
Central to the delivery of the Sea Ceptor capability is the use of an advanced weapon command
& control system. This system can be configured to either provide the full functionality to operate
as an independent air defence capability or to operate as an integrated layer within a higher
command & control architecture hosted on the ship’s combat management system.
The benefits of using a common solution for multiple platforms and services include:
• Common components can be used to create a modular weapon system
• Broad target set including high speed, manoeuvring, low signature targets in high level
countermeasure environments
• Can be used with a variety of surveillance sensor systems
• Command and Control system common to all surface deployments
• Cost benefits of sharing missile stockpiles between the Services
• Affordable due to low procurement and through-life costs
