Tom Phillips found a discarded novel for threepence and used painting, collage, and cut-up techniques to alter every page and create a new work of art titled A Humument. Over 367 pages, Phillips transformed an 1892 Victorian novel into a seminal postmodern artwork. The first edition was published in 1973 and it has since become one of the most famous examples of an artist's book from the 20th century through four revised editions that expanded on Phillips's original transformations of the text.
