Why compressor oil? The compressor oil serves for: Cooling Most of the heat generated by the compression is absorbed by the oil Lubrication The same oil used as coolant is used for lubrication of rotors, bearings, gear-wheels and shaft wheels. Sealing The areas between spaces of different pressure in the compression chamber or on the shaft seal ends are sealed by the oil Corrosion protection The oil protects all internal surfaces of the element against corrosion
Compressor oil : Quality aspects. Superb anti-wear performance. Atlas Copco compressor oil contains the necessary additive package to provide excellent wear protection. High oxidation stability. The compressor oil contains the necessary anti-oxidants to guarantee a long service life and minimize the risk of varnish formation. Balanced combination of anti-foam and air release properties. The oil ensures rapid separation of air and oil in the oil separator, with consequent longer separator life and lower carry-over of lubricant. Excellent water separation. Moisture contamination results in corrosion which drastically reduced the life time of the compressor oil. Balanced composition. Compatible with sealing rubber, paints, aluminium coolers and other materials. Mineral or Synthetic oil. To guarantee optimal service life and best equipment protection under all operating conditions, Atlas Copco offer the choice between PAROIL M or PAROIL S.
Compressor oil : Risk of using non-genuine compressor oil. Poor water separation. A high water content in the oil will result in a reduced compressor element bearing life time. Lack of anti-foam additives. Results in foaming of the oil during air separation. If the oil starts foaming there is a bad oil separation which will result in increased oil contamination of the compressed air and a reduced lifetime of the separator element. Low oxidation tolerance. When the compressor oil doesn’t contain enough anti-oxidant additives it will result in a fast break-down of the oil quality over a shorter time period. The flash point of oxidised oil is drastically lower and can result in fires due to self-ignition. Low anti-wear additives. Low anti-wear additives will reduce the life time of the compressor oil. The use of poor quality compressor oil can result in shorter service intervals. Reduced life time of the compressor element due to insufficient lubrication of the compressor element bearings. Increased risk of separator fires due to faster oxidation of the oil and/or reduced flash point.
