Would you mind stopping bother me! Request with modals and Would you mind…? By Profr. José M. Jaramillo S. October, 2008
Some request Can you turn the lights off , please? Could you stop cooking too hot, please? Would you take the garbage out, please? Can you turn the blender off, please?
Can you clean the mess up? Would you stop looking at me, please? Could you turn saxophone up ? Can you stop playing the saxophone?
Would you mind not looking at me, please? Would you mind answering the phone, please? Would you mind cleaning the mess up please? Would you mind not playing the saxophone again, please? Would you mind stopping this please?
Request with Modal Verbs It is OK to say: “ Please turn the stereo off” to people we know well. We should use a more polite request, however, for neighbors and strangers. Can Could Would
Can you turn off the lights please? Could you clean up the table? Would you pick up the markers, please? Can you close the window, please? Would you take the cat out ? Could you take off your coat, please?
Request with Would you mind…? We can also use this structure to ask a request in a polite way. In this case, the verb mind must be followed by a gerund (verb+ing)
Would you mind not talking while I’m speaking? Would you mind cleaning up the table? Would you mind picking up the markers, please? Would you mind closing the window, please? Would you mind taking the cat out ? Would you mind taking off your coat, please?
