4. 21st Century Learning Our curriculum is far larger than its algebra content New Jersey, in partnership with 13 other states, supports 21st Century Skills, in addition to state content standards. 21st Century Skills website
5. 21st Century Learning Much of what we do in class supports 21st century learning. for example, students will often be assigned to work in pairs or small groups during class activities. This accomplishes several things: they will learn to be flexible, to work effectively with a diverse population and as part of a team. These are all part of life skills, the red part of the rainbow. At the same time they will be learning to solve problems and communicate effectively, the yellow part of the rainbow. We will use technology daily (purple), and wil focus on mathematics, our core subject (green).
6. An Example One project I have planned involves a study of interest rates. In small groups students will be assigned a type of interest to investigate such as home loans, car loans or credit card loans. Alternatively, they might investigate interest that is collected on bonds, CDs or savings accounts. After gathering information about current rates students will make spreadsheets calculating how much is paid or collected each year and over the life of the loan. They will then make a computer presentation to their classmates. I anticipate a lively discussion as their financial , business, and economic literacy is increased.
