forums
to
realize
smart
cities
The
union
government's
smart
cities
project
plans
to
have
a
city-‐level
advisory
forum
for
every
100
smart
cities
enabling
people
to
actively
participate
in
governance
and
reforms.
This
will
include
non-‐profit
organizations,
Chamber
of
Commerce,
women
groups
and
tax
payers
association.
For
every
selected
city,
there
will
be
a
separate
special
purpose
vehicle
-‐
a
company
incorporated
under
the
Companies
Act
having
the
responsibility
to
plan,
appraise,
approve,
release
funds,
implement,
manage,
operate,
monitor
and
evaluate
smart
city
development
projects.
❑ Bill
for
renovating
101
rivers
into
waterways
The
union
government
plans
to
introduce
a
bill
to
seek
for
the
conversion
of
101
rivers
across
the
country
into
waterways.
Being
the
cheaper
mode
to
transport
cargo,
it
is
expected
to
propel
economic
growth.
This
mode
of
transport
is
yet
to
be
tapped
in
the
country
which
accounts
for
47
per
cent
of
China's
transportation
and
40
per
cent
of
Europe's
transport.
Government
has
so
far
confirmed
five
river
stretches
as
waterways.
Inland
waterways
consisting
rivers,
lakes,
canals,
creeks,
and
backwaters
spread
to
about
14,500
km
in
the
country.

❑ Government
to
renovate
90,000
km
national
highways
into
green
corridors
The
union
government
plans
to
convert
90,000
km
of
national
highways
of
the
country
into
green
corridors
and
is
likely
to
create
1,000
contractors
for
this
purpose.
If
the
road
construction
cost
comes
to
INR
1
lakh
crore,
then
plantation
will
cost
to
INR
1,000
crore.
The
new
green
policy
will
create
employment
as
well
as
contribute
towards
the
economic
growth
of
the
country.
❑ Microsoft
to
develop
digital
villages,
cyber-‐security
centre,
'smart
MIDC'
in
Maharashtra
Microsoft
plans
to
develop
'digital
villages'
in
Maharashtra.
A
'smart
MIDC'
or
an
industrial
colony
will
be
set
up
apart
from
setting
up
a
cyber-‐security
centre
in
Pune.
The
location
of
the
smart
MIDC
would
be
selected
shortly.
❑ JICA
may
offer
consultancy
services
to
Greenfield
capital
city
in
Andhra
Pradesh
Japan
International
Cooperation
Agency
(JICA),
a
Japanese
government
agency
has
showed
interest
to
offer
consultancy
services
to
the
greenfield
capital
city
in
Andhra
Pradesh.
The
investment
requirements
of
Andhra’s
greenfield
capital
city
is
estimated
at
USD
50
billion
over
the
next
15
years.
Fuji
Electric
has
submitted
the
feasibility
report
on
the
project
and
agreed
to
set
up
a
smart
grid
project
near
Vijayawada.

❑ Haryana
government
approves
draft
for
Saha
development
State-‐level
committee
of
the
Haryana
government
sanctioned
a
draft
development
plan
for
the
Saha
area
in
Ambala
district
in
Haryana
to
build
a
township.
Covering
an
area
of
2,181
acres,
the
new
township
will
comprise
seven
sectors
accommodating
a
population
of
about
97,000
by
2025.
An
area
of
580
acres
has
been
proposed
for
industrial
use,
790
acres
for
residential
use,
310
acres
for
transport
and
communication
and
120
acres
for
commercial
purposes.

acres
has
been
reserved
for
bus
stand
in
Sector
4
along
Ambala-‐
Jagadhari
road
and
25
acres
area

industrial

proposed

the

Kurukshetra
for
tourists
Free
Wi-‐Fi
service
will
be
soon
available
to
tourists
in
Kurukshetra
district
of
Haryana.
Initially,
it
is
planned
to
be
introduced

Kurukshetra
Panorama

Science
Centre
and
Shri
Krishna
Museum.
Later,
it
will
be
introduced
in
Sannihit

reviewing

the

❑ NHIDCL
to
repair
all
roads
under
its
ambit
in
next
2
months
All
the
highways
under
National
Highways
&
Infrastructure
Development
Corporation
Limited
(NHIDCL)
is
likely
to
be
repaired
within
next
two
months.
In
Assam,
Ministry
of
Road
Transport
and
Highways
Undertaking
has
already
started
repair
works
on
Biswanath
Chariali
bypass
(208.00
km)
to
Gohpur
(265.50
km)
road.
NHIDCL
has
been
incorporated
as
a
new
body
for
driving
the
construction
of
highways
and
other
infrastructure
in
North-‐Eastern
region
and
the
border
regions
of
the
country.
❑ Intelligent
City
Program
launch
will
permit
India
to
undergo
planned
urbanization
The
level
of
urbanization
is
expected
to
reach
50
per
cent
in
India
by
2039.
India
needs
to
expend
more
than
USD
1
trillion
in
its
urban
areas
over
the
next
20
years
in
order
to
manage
this
rapid
urbanization.
The
launch
of
the
Intelligent
City
Programme
will
allow
India
to
undertake
planned
urbanization
making
cities
more
civilized.
With
the
surge
in
Indian
population,
higher
pressures
are
placed
on
infrastructural
amenities
such
as
transportation,
healthcare,
education
and
public
safety.
The
key
concepts
of
Intelligent
City
initiatives
are
intelligent
governance,
intelligent
energy,
intelligent
building,
intelligent
mobility,
intelligent
infrastructure,
intelligent
healthcare
and
intelligent
citizens.
The
implementation
of
these
concepts
by
the
city
specific
authorities
will
be
the
key
towards
India
recognizing
the
dreams
of
100
intelligent
cities
in
the
next
10
years.

❑ Centre
approves
INR
3,500
crore
for
road
projects
in
Jammu
and
Kashmir
Two
road
projects
worth
INR
3,500
crore
have
been
approved
by
the
union
government
in
Jammu
city
to
lift
road
development
infrastructure
in
the
state.
The
project
is
likely
to
be
commissioned
by
next
year
and
the
work
on
upgradation
of
Srinagar-‐Jammu
highway
is
being
accelerated.

❑ MSRDC
to
raise
funds
for
Mumbai-‐Pune
Expressway
Maharashtra
State
Road
Development
Corporation
(MSRDC)
is
considering
raising
funds
for
the
Mumbai-‐
Pune
Expressway.
Numerous
financial
institutions
such
as
Life
Insurance
Corporation,
private
banks
and
investors
are
likely
to
invest
in
MSRDC
projects
and
will
provide
them
with
loans.
The
project
is
planned
to
include
an
elevated
road
and
a
tunnel
to
widen
six-‐lane
stretch
to
14-‐lane
on
the
existing
Mumbai
Expressway.
❑ China,
Japan
to
invest
in
Mumbai
sea
link
project
Maharashtra
government
received
INR
11,000
crore
to
build
the
22-‐km
Mumbai
Trans-‐harbour
Sea
Link
from
Mumbai
to
Navi
Mumbai.
The
state
government
had
approached
Japan
International
Co-‐operation
Agency
and
the
Chinese
government
for
financing
the
project.
Besides
Japan
and
China,
UK
and
Germany
have
also
showed
willingness
to
finance
the
project.
