Online portal for Smart City suggestions
There is little clarity on the implementation of smart city initiatives. Therefore, corporations have gone
online to gather public opinion on the Smart City project. Corporation websites and official Facebook
pages carry the link to the polls. Some of the smart visions include housing for all, pollution free
environment, efficient mobility, water access, among others. The Union Government has announced
that several Smart City initiatives cannot be taken up as pan-city solutions. For instance, cities have to
choose between water supply and sanitation.
Integrated transport for Smart Mumbai city
To convert Mumbai into a Smart City and an international financial hub public, transport systems need
to be integrated. Although one crore people use public transport, private vehicles on road have
increased by 10 percent in the last 10 years, due to the lack of facilities. To create a metro network of
108 km by 2019, the state government has got the Centre’s approval for the Mumbai Urban Transport
Project (MUTP) Phase 3 that will increase the suburban railway network. The metros, monorails,
railways, coastal road and bus transport will all be integrated so that commutation in the Mumbai
Metropolitan Region will be hassle-free and can be done in one hour between two points. Also a single-
ticket system would be introduced. The estimated cost of the 16.5 km Andheri East-Dahisar East
elevated Metro corridor is INR 6,208 crore and the 18.6 km Dahisar-DN Nagar corridor is INR 6,410
crore. Both the projects are expected to start in March 2016 and will be completed by March 2019.
Nashik citizens on green drive
Citizens of Nashik believe that even though rapid urbanisation has increased pollution, the city can strike
a balance between environment and development to fulfill one of the criteria for the Smart City tag.
After public interest litigation, the city administration is taking several steps to clean up the Godavari for
the Khumbh Mela, which is major tourist attraction in Nashik. Apart from planting more trees, green
building standards to reduce electricity use and e-autos to maintain environmental balance has been
suggested by citizens.

technology and software, the firm will help PMC in filing error-free tax proposals, in updating the civic
administration on the changes in tax policies, in timely tax returns and in creating better accounting
database. It will also support in the financial analysis of projects like Smart City. The PMC is the first civic
