32. • To quantify the importance of an author in the informetrics
research collaboration network, for each author their
number of collaborators, collaborations and betweenness
centrality were also calculated. Betweenness centrality is the
probability that a particular author appears on the shortest
path between any pair of authors in the collaboration
network (Prell 2011; Yan et al. 2010) and is an indicator of
the importance of an author for the connectedness of a
network.
• This part of Table 3 includes some that successfully co-
author with others in countries that have historically been
outside of the core of informetrics, such as China (Liang,
Qiu, Wang), France (Zitt), Brazil (Leta) and South Korea
(Park), even though they are not in the top 30 for
productivity.

• In a 2014 paper, researchers James A. Danowski of
the University of Illinois–Chicago and Han Woo Park
of Yeungnam University found evidence that, in
countries where the early uprisings took place, there
was a strong association with “increases in radical
Islamist concepts in their Web domains.” The
scholars say the digital patterns show how the terms
“democracy” and “civil society” were “transformed
into meanings strongly associated with the Islamist
ideology terms Jihad, Sharia, and others,”
representing “an unintended consequence of the U.S.
and other Western nations’ policies regarding civil
society.”
