Twitter, Facebook and KakaoStory user access factor
KakaoStory : KakaoStory service had begun in March 2012 when the number
of KakaoTalk users were already over 45,000,000 and in a few months the
number of KakaoStory users went over 20,000,000. KakaoStory was
invented based on the idea of KakaoTalk users’ pattern of changing profile
pictures and recent activity postings as many times as they want and
sharing various pictures and delivering daily life so it attracted great
attention right after its release. KakaoStory is a profile album service.
Different from other SNS, KakaoStory has a character of using personal
relationship already formed offline like Cyworld minihomepage.
In Kakao Story, not the Kakao Photo, reading the flow of market and the flow
of the era, photo is not but the story is the future.
13. Hong, S.Y., & Oh, J.C. Comparative analysis on
Twitter, Facebook and KakaoStory user access factor
Mostly Twitter and KakaoStory were used less than 15 minutes at a time, and
Facebook was used less than 30 minutes. The number of friends in Twitter
was mostly over 1,000; in Facebook the number of friends was quite evenly
distributed; while in KakaoStory there was none who has more than 1,000
friends but most had less than 100 friends, which shows that it is a service
based on offline relationships.
Content Sharing and Expert Search in Twitter;
Content Sharing, Communication, and Connection in KakaoStory;
and the rest of four factors except for Connection in Facebook.

26. This study analyzes the configurations of communication relationships in Korea through
face-to-face, email, instant messaging, mobile phone, and short message service media.
Through a web survey, we asked respondents to identify (1) for each of the five media (2)
up to five of their most frequent communication partners, (3) the partner‟s social role
(including colleagues, family, friends), and (4) their own employment category. Individual-
level and network-level analyses were used to compare variations in communication
relationships and configurations of relationships among social roles overall, within each
medium, and for different employment categories, and to identify configurations of
relationships across media. IM, SMS, and mobile phone are distinctive media for
students, mobile phone for homeworkers, and email for organizational workers.
Moreover, mobile phones tend to be used in reinforcing strong social ties, and text-based
CMC media tend to be used in expanding relationships with weak ties. Finally, face-to-face
(FtF) seems to be a universal medium without significant differences across respondents‟
employment categories.
27. Results
Individual Level: Mean Relationships by
Medium and Employment Category
•FtF: no significant differences in the number of
communication partners across employment
categories
•EM: significantly higher number of relationships for
worker (salaried and tech professionals)
•IM: home workers had significantly fewer
relationships
•MP and SMS: middle/high
school students have
fewer relationships
28. Network Level:
Descriptive Analysis of Configurations of
Relationships by Medium
•configurations of relationships among the social
roles in FtF and mobile phone quite similar
(clustered)
•Email and SMS also tightly but separately clustered
•IM is less tightly clustered with email and SMS
•IM least similar to FtF and especially MP

interpersonal media?: Mobile phone and instant messenger.
Computers in Human Behavior 27. 924–934
• The sharp distinction between theories for nonmediated
communication and mediated communication is disappearing.
The interconnectedness of face-to-face communication and
mediated interpersonal communication is a salient current
phenomenon. To explore the relation between two
communication types this study investigated the relevance of
the concept of communication competence with the
interpersonal digital media; mobile phone, SMS, and instant
messenger.
• The implication of this study is that mediated interpersonal
communication is not a stand-alone interactive modality;
rather, it becomes feasible on the basis of real-life FtF
communication. A continuous interchange of mediated and
FtF interactions through interpersonal media affect people‟s
communication styles.

32. The future of social relations
The social benefits of internet use will far outweigh
the negatives over the next decade. They say this is
because email, social networks, and other online
tools offer ‘low‐friction’ opportunities to create,
enhance, and rediscover social ties that make a
difference in people’s lives.
Some 85% agreed with the statement:
“In 2020, when I look at the big picture and consider my
personal friendships, marriage and other relationships, I
see that the internet has mostly been a positive force on
my social world. And this will only grow more true in the
future.”
“There's no escaping people anymore, and I believe that

33. B. Hogan, A theory of Lowest
common denominator culture
• People tend to censor their posts by the
lowest common denominator of all their
friends on a specific account, rather than
consider their accounts “public” or “private”.
• But as friend lists increase, two things
happen
- Content gets watered down.
- More conventional/hegemonic people feel
more confortable on the site
33
34. • Networks may not be obvious to
users, but show obvious stories about
overlapping groups
• They illustrate the tension between
content that is right in a „situation‟ but
not so easy to show online
• Without clear situational boundaries on
social network sites people will cater to
the lowest common denominator, or
suffer the consequences
