In this class, we read from Matthew Hindman's book "The Myth of Digital Democracy" and Eli Pariser's book "The Filter Bubble," and discussed their respective critiques. Hindman says the web is reproducing a system where elites dominate public discourse because while anyone can publish online, only a few get to be heard. Pariser points out how platforms and social networks like Google and Facebook have inordinate (and often hidden) power to shape what knowledge we encounter, and asks if we can trust how this power is being used.

In this class, we looked at the role of the Internet in Howard Dean's 2004 campaign, and began to look at the 2008 Obama campaign as well. In particular, we looked closely at how the Dean campaign harnessed and benefited from network effects, and then began to explore the role of outside "free agents" in the 2008 race, notably Phil de Vellis and Joe Anthony.

In democracies, demonstrating is a legitimate way for citizens to let their officials know how they feel about important topics and try to change policies or attitudes. Peaceful demonstrations are powerful to keep the checks and balances in democracies. As we have seen over the ages (going back to Roman times), once demonstrations turn into riots, democracies are shaken to the core. During a riot, the fine line between being an activist and a criminal is often crossed. For law enforcement, restoring and keeping order is a challenge. It involves identifying the agitators, those actors who believe that violent means justify the cause, and those who join demonstrations (often in other cities) to create trouble. Law enforcement needs to have the tools to identify and separate the bad apples from the rest to protect the fundamental democratic right to demonstrate.

This study is a qualitative content analysis that addresses how four civil rights organizations used rhetorical strategies and tactics to focus on voting and voter suppression leading up to Election 2012. The organizations involved in this study were the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), National Urban League (NUL), National Action Network (NAN), and ColorOfChange.org (COC). This study examines 82 press releases, official statements, blog posts, and miscellaneous public relations materials. It also explores how often the organizations referenced joint efforts between one another. Three rhetorical strategies and tactics are used in this study: identification, protest-framing theory, and vilification. Findings show that the predominant use of antithesis, a part of identification, suggests that the organization sought unity, primarily among members of its organization and state branches, against several perceived enemies, including the American Legislative Exchange Council, some Republicans, and the Tea Party Victory Fund. Findings also show that the organization missed several opportunities to publicize how they were working together.

Reflect: The U.S. has one of the lowest voter turnout rates among modern democratic political systems. One study ranks the U.S. 120th on a list of 169 nations compared on voter turnout (Pintor, Gratschew, & Sullivan, 2002). During the last decade, many initiatives have been undertaken to increase voter participation, yet concerns about the possibility of election fraud have also increased. Additionally, some political interests feel threatened by the increase in turnout among some traditionally low-turnout ethnic minorities. Several states have recently passed legislation imposing new registration and identification requirements. This has sparked debate about whether these are tactics intended to suppress turnout or to prevent fraud. Think about the media’s role in the election process and how both mass media and social media can impact the election process. Write: In your initial post, summarize recent developments in several states enacting voter ID laws. Analyze and describe the pros and cons on both sides of the debate about these laws. Is voter fraud a major problem for our democracy or are some groups trying to make it harder for some segments of society to vote? What impact has the media (mass and social) had in influencing public opinion regarding voter ID laws? Draw your own conclusion about the debate over voter ID laws and justify your conclusions with facts and persuasive reasoning. Contents Introduction I. Every sectarian approach and every sectarian thought are a vicious mistake and an intolerable act. II. Political situations and international relations do not define the nature of regimes, governments, and states. III. When it comes to world affairs, there is no such thing as a chessboard with "black" and "white" squares. IV. All mass media report the same lies, changing only the «chess sets». V. The dignity of the Iranians and the Palestinians is a most controversial subject. VI. Believing promises given by enemies disguised as friends may be lethal. VII. Military and farmers against the royals and the ayatollahs VIII. There is no difference between Iran and Egypt when it comes to servility toward major colonial schemes.
