William built castles quickly in wood to expand Norman control over England and defend against uprisings. His early castles were not well-built but protected by moats and steep walls. Castles later improved with the use of stone which was stronger and better defended against siege weapons, arrows, and fire. The tallest castle built in the 12th century was Rochester Castle at 34.5 meters tall.

5. His castles were weak not built very good and quickly made to avoid English from ruling the country . They were protect marvellously though by the moat and the steep on the floor which made it harder for invaders to climb up
