Continuity Editing
Montage/Editing Terms
• Montage:
• When shots are put together that are not part of a continuous narrativebut create meaning through the clash of images
• Editing Terms:
• Cut- when a shot cuts to the next without a transition between them off
eg: Fade/Wipe/Dissolve
• Editing Allows time in a film to be expanded or Compressed so that parts
of the narrative are given extra time or moved forward quickly
180 Rule/30 Rule
• 180 Rule:
• States that only starts taken from one side of the 180 can be
edited together. It is the cornerstone of community editing
• 30 Rule:
• That shots that are less then 30 apart cannot be edited
together without causing a Jump
Match on Action
• Continuity Exercise:
• 1 Person in a room, a person walking to the room, Person
enters the room, Starts Down and has two line Conversation
• Parallel Editing:
• When one scene crosses cuts between another scene and
suggests that the action is happening at the same time
