Need for Small Flowers for Hanamido
The Hawaii Buddhist Council Buddha Day Service will be held on
Sunday, April 2, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. at Jodo Mission of Hawaii. Part of the
service is the display of a Hanamido. A sample Hanamido is
pictured on the right. In the middle of the Hanamido is a small
statue of Baby Buddha. At the Buddha Day Service, each
person may pour sweet tea over the Baby Buddha.
We will need small flowers such as plumerias to deco-
rate this Hanamido. If you have any small flowers, please
bring them on April 1st to:
Jodo Mission of Hawaii
1429 Makiki Street, Honolulu, HI 96814
PH: 949-3995
Thank you so much for your help with flowers for the Hanamido. Please
join us for this Buddha Day Service on Sunday, April 2, 2017 at 9:30 a.m.
ALERT— Nokotsudo/Columbarium Users
Please do not bring any beer, sake, fruits or any type of food
items to the Nokotsudo/Columbarium when you visit your ancestors.
Some people are watching this temple and when they feel it is safe,
they will come and either take the liquor, fruits or food items
with them or they will eat/drink them while in the Nokotsudo/
Columbarium.
This is very important! We do not want to encourage
these strangers! Thank you very much for your cooperation!
Jodo Mission of Hawaii
“Go for Broke” Movie
Stacy Hayashi, who authored “Journey of Heroes” about the 100th Infan-
try Battalion and 442nd Regimental Combat Team is in the final phase of the
movie “Go for Broke”. There is a funeral scene to be filmed at Jodo Mission of
Hawaii and she would like as many members to come out on Saturday,
April 15, 9 am to 12 noon and be a part of this movie. So please come and
if possible dress like the 1940’s period. Thank you.
Sick of Being Sick, Get Healthy the Natural Way
On Sunday, March 12, Dr. Terry Shintani was our guest
speaker. Also his assistant, Dr. Diane Nomura came with him and
gave a wonderful introduction. Dr. Shintani is a well-known pre-
ventive medicine doctor who received his masters degree in nutri-
tion at Harvard University and his law and medical de-
grees at the University of Hawaii. What was interesting
was when he commented that doctors prescribe medicine
for people to get well and the medicine prescribed only
helps alleviate the symptoms and does not necessarily do
away with the problem. While studying nutrition, he found that there are
ways that people can cure themselves by correcting their diet. He stated
“eating junk food will make you have a junk body”. Dr. Shintani is such a
wonderful speaker and has such a down-to-earth personality that our members felt
comfortable enough to ask questions. Those who had concerns about certain ailments
asked questions about that specific ailment. Dr. Diane also answered questions that
members and visitors had. Dr. Shintani has written many, many books which you can
find over the internet. His latest book is entitled “The Peace Diet”.
He has a radio show on Sundays from 8 pm to 9 pm on KWAI, K-108, 1080
on the AM dial on your radio or you can listen online on your computer or
smartphone: www.kwai1080AM.com This URL will take you to the radio station’s
website. On the website, click on the link that says: “Listen to US Now—We are on
the Internet”. That should take you to the live radio show going on at that time. You
will know if you are connected when you hear the sound/audio. It may take about 30
seconds or less. Do NOT click any other links or buttons on the site while you are
waiting. That will take you somewhere else, away from the radio site. Listen to his
radio show and maybe sometime in the future he will come back to again give anoth-
er talk to our members,

Visitation by Bukkyo University
On February 20, 2017, 16 students and 2 instruc-
tors from Bukkyo University of Kyoto, Japan, visit-
ed Jodo Mission of Hawaii. Bukkyo in Japanese
means Buddhism and the university’s philosophy is
based on Pure Land Buddhism. Upon arrival at the
temple, there was a service conducted by our minis-
ters. Students were in Hawaii as part of an exchange
program with the University of Hawaii for one week
of extensive English study.
Each year when they come to Hawaii they are served refreshments of fruits (papaya
and pineapples), juice and ice cream from Hawaii.. The students and instructors really
enjoyed the Hawaiian fruits, fruit punch and ice cream.
Reminder: April 30—Part 2 of “A Gift for Your Family:
The Importance of Advance Care Planning”
On March 19, 2017, our guest speakers were two nurses: Joy Kurihara, GNP
(Geriatric Nurse Practitioner) and Patricia W. Nishimoto, DNS (Adult Oncology
Clinical nurse Specialist at Tripler Army Medical Center). They were both volunteer
speakers with Kokua Mau and we were happy to have them as our
guest speakers.
They stressed how important it was for each of us to have a
plan as to what our care wishes are and to talk to the person who is
our “agent” on our behalf and to discuss with our doctor. This
“agent” would be designated and called upon when you are unable to
make decisions for yourself. Who designates that you are unable to
make decisions will be determined by certain questions that can be
asked by a doctor. It was mentioned that American Savings Bank has
a “Senior Handbook” which gives a lot of information.
As a follow up, please come on Sunday, April 30, at 10:00 a.m. when Joy
Kurihara and Patricia Nishimoto will come back to answer more questions.

Honolulu Jodo Shu Fujinkai
On February 26, 2017, Honolulu Jodo Shu Fujinkai had their General Membership
meeting and New Year’s Party. Rev. Yubun Narashiba thanked the ladies for their many
years of dedication to the temple. Fujinkai
has always been there for the temple. Kyodan
President Jon Riki Karamatsu also thanked
the ladies for their dedication and continued
his talk on positive thinking. Even if you
have a bad day, it may not have been all bad
because if you think back on the day’s activi-
ties there may have been some good things or
at least one good thing that happened and as
you begin to think of each day you will feel
like the day was not all bad and when you add
all these positives, life looks brighter!
Rev. Narashiba installed the officers of the Honolulu Jodo Shu Fujinkai: President:
Sally Hayashi; Vice President: Akiko Nishiyama; Recording Secretary: Christine Inouye;
Assistant Recording Secretary and Corresponding Secretary: Carly Molnaire; Treasurer:
Yukari Narashiba; Assistant Treasurer Tomoko
Hisamoto; Auditors: Doris Soma and Gail Masa-
ki. All were given a purple yarn lei made by Gail
Masaki. Thank you Gail!
After the ceremonial portion and welcome
addresses, the ladies moved to the Social Hall for a
wonderful New Year’s party with food ordered from
Natsunoya Tea House: maki and inari sushi, oriental
chicken salad, hibachi chicken, baked fish, nishime,
noodles. There were also desserts made by the mem-
bers, etc. The Keiro women and supporters (all over
80 years old; oldest 97) were honored with a con-
tainer of sekihan. These Keiro women have worked
hard for so many years for our temple! With all their
aches and pains, they still come to the temple to help in whatever way they can.
Arigato Gozaimasu!
Gail Masaki then demonstrated and each person made a yarn lei.
Left: Peggy Miyamoto dis-
played her finished lei. Note
the 2 favors by her left hand
which were put together by
Christine Inouye. Also note on
the table is a package of Seki-
han which each Keiro person
received. It was a nice party!
Next year hope to see more
Fujinkai ladies!
1st row: Doris Soma, Mikie Karimoto, Yoshiko Kitagawa,
Tomoko Hisamoto, Harue Maki, 2nd row: Clifford Miya-
moto (supporter), Peggy Miyamoto, Teruto Soma
(supporter), Akiko Nishiyama, Harumi Molnaire

What is “Perpetual Memorial
Service?” (Eitaikyo)
This record of a perpetual memorial service and
is called Eitaikyo in Japanese. When the date of
death occurs for a person listed on this record, the
ministers pray for that individual during the morn-
ing service. The prayers will continue each year for
as long as Jodo Mission exists.
Anyone can be included in it. You may put your
own name on the list, too. This also helps when it
is difficult to have memorial services. We also wel-
come you to attend the morning service at
9:30am.
How to apply
Stop by the office, and fill out the application
form. Each name costs $200. After the application
is accepted, the name will be listed on the record.

Part of the service is the display of a Hanamido. A sample Hanamido is pictured on the right. In the middle of the Hanamido is a small statue of Baby Buddha. At the Buddha Day Service, each person may pour sweet tea over the Baby Buddha. We will need small flowers such as plumerias to deco- rate this Hanamido. If you have any small flowers, please bring them on April 1st to: Jodo Mission of Hawaii 1429 Makiki Street, Honolulu, HI 96814 PH: 949-3995 Thank you so much for your help with flowers for the Hanamido. Please join us for this Buddha Day Service on Sunday, April 2, 2017 at 9:30 a.m. ALERT— Nokotsudo/Columbarium Users Please do not bring any beer, sake, fruits or any type of food items to the Nokotsudo/Columbarium when you visit your ancestors. Some people are watching this temple and when they feel it is safe, they will come and either take the liquor, fruits or food items with them or they will eat/drink them while in the Nokotsudo/ Columbarium. This is very important! We do not want to encourage these strangers! Thank you very much for your cooperation! Jodo Mission of Hawaii “Go for Broke” Movie Stacy Hayashi, who authored “Journey of Heroes” about the 100th Infan- try Battalion and 442nd Regimental Combat Team is in the final phase of the movie “Go for Broke”. There is a funeral scene to be filmed at Jodo Mission of Hawaii and she would like as many members to come out on Saturday, April 15, 9 am to 12 noon and be a part of this movie. So please come and if possible dress like the 1940’s period. Thank you.
  • 3. Sick of Being Sick, Get Healthy the Natural Way On Sunday, March 12, Dr. Terry Shintani was our guest speaker. Also his assistant, Dr. Diane Nomura came with him and gave a wonderful introduction. Dr. Shintani is a well-known pre- ventive medicine doctor who received his masters degree in nutri- tion at Harvard University and his law and medical de- grees at the University of Hawaii. What was interesting was when he commented that doctors prescribe medicine for people to get well and the medicine prescribed only helps alleviate the symptoms and does not necessarily do away with the problem. While studying nutrition, he found that there are ways that people can cure themselves by correcting their diet. He stated “eating junk food will make you have a junk body”. Dr. Shintani is such a wonderful speaker and has such a down-to-earth personality that our members felt comfortable enough to ask questions. Those who had concerns about certain ailments asked questions about that specific ailment. Dr. Diane also answered questions that members and visitors had. Dr. Shintani has written many, many books which you can find over the internet. His latest book is entitled “The Peace Diet”. He has a radio show on Sundays from 8 pm to 9 pm on KWAI, K-108, 1080 on the AM dial on your radio or you can listen online on your computer or smartphone: www.kwai1080AM.com This URL will take you to the radio station’s website. On the website, click on the link that says: “Listen to US Now—We are on the Internet”. That should take you to the live radio show going on at that time. You will know if you are connected when you hear the sound/audio. It may take about 30 seconds or less. Do NOT click any other links or buttons on the site while you are waiting. That will take you somewhere else, away from the radio site. Listen to his radio show and maybe sometime in the future he will come back to again give anoth- er talk to our members, Ukulele Making Would you like to build an ukulele? What if I said you could make a top quality instrument in less than a couple of hours? Would you be interested? If you say yes, then sign up for my new ukulele making class at Jodo Mission of Hawaii. For more information stop by Jodo Mission of Hawaii for the flyers or send your inquires to: ukemakingclass@gmail.com attn: Stuart Nago Page 3
  • 4. Visitation by Bukkyo University On February 20, 2017, 16 students and 2 instruc- tors from Bukkyo University of Kyoto, Japan, visit- ed Jodo Mission of Hawaii. Bukkyo in Japanese means Buddhism and the university’s philosophy is based on Pure Land Buddhism. Upon arrival at the temple, there was a service conducted by our minis- ters. Students were in Hawaii as part of an exchange program with the University of Hawaii for one week of extensive English study. Each year when they come to Hawaii they are served refreshments of fruits (papaya and pineapples), juice and ice cream from Hawaii.. The students and instructors really enjoyed the Hawaiian fruits, fruit punch and ice cream. Reminder: April 30—Part 2 of “A Gift for Your Family: The Importance of Advance Care Planning” On March 19, 2017, our guest speakers were two nurses: Joy Kurihara, GNP (Geriatric Nurse Practitioner) and Patricia W. Nishimoto, DNS (Adult Oncology Clinical nurse Specialist at Tripler Army Medical Center). They were both volunteer speakers with Kokua Mau and we were happy to have them as our guest speakers. They stressed how important it was for each of us to have a plan as to what our care wishes are and to talk to the person who is our “agent” on our behalf and to discuss with our doctor. This “agent” would be designated and called upon when you are unable to make decisions for yourself. Who designates that you are unable to make decisions will be determined by certain questions that can be asked by a doctor. It was mentioned that American Savings Bank has a “Senior Handbook” which gives a lot of information. As a follow up, please come on Sunday, April 30, at 10:00 a.m. when Joy Kurihara and Patricia Nishimoto will come back to answer more questions. Page 4
  • 5. Page 5 Honolulu Jodo Shu Fujinkai On February 26, 2017, Honolulu Jodo Shu Fujinkai had their General Membership meeting and New Year’s Party. Rev. Yubun Narashiba thanked the ladies for their many years of dedication to the temple. Fujinkai has always been there for the temple. Kyodan President Jon Riki Karamatsu also thanked the ladies for their dedication and continued his talk on positive thinking. Even if you have a bad day, it may not have been all bad because if you think back on the day’s activi- ties there may have been some good things or at least one good thing that happened and as you begin to think of each day you will feel like the day was not all bad and when you add all these positives, life looks brighter! Rev. Narashiba installed the officers of the Honolulu Jodo Shu Fujinkai: President: Sally Hayashi; Vice President: Akiko Nishiyama; Recording Secretary: Christine Inouye; Assistant Recording Secretary and Corresponding Secretary: Carly Molnaire; Treasurer: Yukari Narashiba; Assistant Treasurer Tomoko Hisamoto; Auditors: Doris Soma and Gail Masa- ki. All were given a purple yarn lei made by Gail Masaki. Thank you Gail! After the ceremonial portion and welcome addresses, the ladies moved to the Social Hall for a wonderful New Year’s party with food ordered from Natsunoya Tea House: maki and inari sushi, oriental chicken salad, hibachi chicken, baked fish, nishime, noodles. There were also desserts made by the mem- bers, etc. The Keiro women and supporters (all over 80 years old; oldest 97) were honored with a con- tainer of sekihan. These Keiro women have worked hard for so many years for our temple! With all their aches and pains, they still come to the temple to help in whatever way they can. Arigato Gozaimasu! Gail Masaki then demonstrated and each person made a yarn lei. Left: Peggy Miyamoto dis- played her finished lei. Note the 2 favors by her left hand which were put together by Christine Inouye. Also note on the table is a package of Seki- han which each Keiro person received. It was a nice party! Next year hope to see more Fujinkai ladies! 1st row: Doris Soma, Mikie Karimoto, Yoshiko Kitagawa, Tomoko Hisamoto, Harue Maki, 2nd row: Clifford Miya- moto (supporter), Peggy Miyamoto, Teruto Soma (supporter), Akiko Nishiyama, Harumi Molnaire
