5. Daywear Versus
Evening Glamour
Until the 1930s
wealthy women had
not really needed to
wear practical day
clothes. Although
styles had been
designated day
styles if they were
impractical it had
not really mattered
as long as maids
took care of chores.
6. War clothes
In Britain fashion
was a forgotten
luxury. We had
rationing of clothing,
so most civilians had
to manage with
whatever clothing
they started the war
with, being only able
to replace a few
things when they
wore out. Those were
days of make do and
mend, I socks for
example.
7. Girls and boys
In 1939 all girls wore
dresses and skirts.
Usually a simple blouse
was very popular. Or
skirts that went down to
the knees and to the
ankles. The dresses were
usually button down.
Men usually button
down shirts with ties
and long dress brownish
coloured pants.
Men for shoes, wore
leather dress shoes.
