Children in Need of Care & Protection in India Over 30 million children in India in need of care and protection Mostly “outside the system”… exposed to trafficking and destitution Estimated 9500 Child Care Institutions across India An estimated 370,000 children stay in child care institutions (CCIs) Only 3000-4000 adoptions per year At least 150,000 children aged 14-18 and young adults aged 19-21 known to be within the system

Our work with children in CCI’s We aim to act as catalysts- leveraging existing institutions and empowering them to improve child outcomes These CCI’s suffer from a variety of different bottlenecks that prevent them from providing family like care to CNCP children: • Lack of clean facilities • Malnutrition • Poor infrastructure, health & hygiene • Resource constraints for education and aftercare How Do We Bridge the Gap? • Conduct a comprehensive gap analysis using our CCI Evaluation tool at the start of the engagement with the CCI to identify key bottlenecks and target areas for our intervention • Devise a 3-5 year engagement plan for the CCI either under our GO WIDE program or our GO DEEP program that addresses these highlighted problem areas • Roll out sub-programs under our 4 categories- Health and Nutrition, Education and Child Development, Aftercare and Livelihood and Capacity Building and Adoption – custom to the needs of the CCI • Weekly Monitoring and Evaluation of Program Outcomes • Yearly Evaluation of outcomes against original targets

The primary intervention originates from our belief that a happy and healthy childhood is the right of every child. Health and Nutrition Health, Hygiene & Sanitation Supplementary Nutrition Day To Day Essentials Health, Hygiene & Sanitation Infrastructure to improve health & hygiene Objective To improve Children’s health, hygiene & sanitation conditions of CCIs, thus ensuring a good base for development of children Bi-yearly basic health check-up in August & February under 4 areas – Dental, Eye, ENT and Physical & Others Prescribed treatment for children based on health check-up results Awareness trainings on basic health care & hygiene for children and staff Availability of basic & additional hygiene kit and sanitation material to the children & CCI respectively Objective To ensure basic day to day requirements are available Providing innerwear, footwear and other essentials Objective To provide safe & hygienic living conditions Support basic repairs and toilet / bathroom construction Support for beds and bedding kit, water filters, basic electrification, whitewash etc. On-ground Approach Objective Support being provided to children in the form of supplementary nutrition in order to improve overall health & BMI levels Bi-yearly BMI (Body Mass Index) level assessment Consultation with nutritionist based on BMI status, post health check-ups Supplementary nutrition support – fruits, vegetables, milk, nutritious snacks etc. based on suggestions from nutritionist Regular follow-up & monitoring of the nutrition support provided On-ground Approach On-ground Approach On-ground Approach Ensuring children have access to good health & treatments, basic hygiene, nutrition & safe living conditions

Capacity Building and Advocacy Adoption Objective To help children get into the adoption stream so that they have a chance at getting adopted Making Children Legally free for adoption by assessing parental contact of children at child care institutions and reporting them to the child welfare committees to make them legally free Helpline to support prospective adoptive parents with inquiries around application & documentation process Grassroots level workshops to train Anganwadi workers on adoption process & how to identify children in need of care & protection On-ground Approach CCI Capacity Building Objective To help build capacity & capability of CCIs to sustain their work in child care at a higher level Train CCI trustees, management & staff on Juvenile Justice Act, documentation & record maintenance and best child care practices On-ground Approach Stakeholder Workshops & Trainings Objective To build awareness amongst stakeholders around children in CCIs & adoption Conduct sensitization workshops for grass root level workers, CWC, hospitals, police, adoptive parents, judiciary etc. Trainings for CCI staff on Juvenile Justice Act On-ground Approach Build capacity of stakeholders at various levels to enhance awareness around best child care practices and advocate to promote adoption in the country
  14. 11,581 children assessed for parental contact in 198 CCI’s in 4 states 104 children made legally free which gives them a chance of being adopted 7 children are with families (3 children adopted and 4 under foster care) 2000+ grass root level workers were trained in rural areas on adoption 35 CCI staff coached on various aspects around JJ Act & documentation

Our Impact So Far 100+ children are in jobs – monthly remuneration ranging from 6K – 12K 227 children were supported in Aftercare for higher education and skill training 503 children completed Financial Literacy Training 71% children who appeared passed 10th grade exams 285 children underwent life- skill training 76 Tuition Teachers were appointed for Out of School tuition support program. 86% children were identified with no ailments during end line health check. 83% children were found with normal BMI status Basic Hygiene kits (toothbrush, toothpaste, bath soaps & washing soaps) were distributed twice in the year to 3300+ children Total 274 children were certified with through life skill training 3100+ children underwent health checks 2 times in the year & attended various awareness sessions (hygiene, good touch & bad touch, ICE- In Case of Emergency 928 Children were Assessed by CSA. We observed improvement in learning outcomes by 25% in Maths & 32% in Language 93% children who appeared passed 12th grade exam.

  23. Who our current donors are At CSA, we have the good will & support of passionate organizations that work with us to enhance childcare in Child Care Institutions. These are either large, mid-size or small organizations who share our vision of working jointly towards optimizing rehabilitation outcomes for children in Child Care Institutions. The association also provides opportunities for employees to engage with children on a one to one basis and be a ‘change catalyst’ in their own way!
  24. Listings We value the faith and trust our donors place in us while making a donation. It is important for us as a NGO to ensure that we demonstrate the highest level of transparency, accountability & good governance. We have undergone stringent selection processes with noted funding organizations & institutions after a thorough due diligence process with regards to legal compliance, registrations, financial audits, programs, governance, organization policies & reporting.
