Formal Poetry Explication
Formal Poetry Explication Essay This poem dramatizes the conflict between faith and realism,
particularly how the speaker seems to believe that both are equally as important. The line "In the
bleak midwinter" used to describe the speaker's faith because it is understatement for when Jesus
was born. In the winter, "frosty wind [...] moans" (1) and " earth [stands] hard as iron [and] water
[is] like as tone" (2). The first stanza literally describes the winter and the coldness surrounding it;
however, the diction such as "long ago" (4), sets a story–telling kind of mood. Also, assonance,
repetition of the "o" sound, helps develop the imagery of the wind moaning. Repetition of snow,
"snow on snow" also builds the imagery of snow falling. This

Macbeth: Critical Thinking Questions
This report offers critical thinking questions to assist writers in creating a descriptive paragraph on
the two most complex characters in the play, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Internally, Macbeth is
reluctant to think of murder as the solution to any of his problems, but with the coax of Lady
Macbeth, he defies his morals and continues with the plan to assassinate Duncan.

Poetry is often used as an outlet to express one's feelings or ideas. Sometimes it is possible to find
out a person's mental state from reading their poetry. Violeta Parra was an artist in many senses
including poetry. In her poem and song "Here's to Life", it appears that Parra is celebrating life but
may hint at certain factors in her life such as racism, poverty, exhaustion, mixed emotions, and her
love life that lead to her depression and impending suicide. An ironic tone is established in the
poem by the speaker giving contradictions to the things she is grateful for. The first line of every
stanza starts with the phrase "Thanks to the life that has given me so much" (1). This phrase alone
seems to be genuinely grateful. The speaker...show more content...
It is suggested that the speaker may not happy with her life and expresses that with an ironic tone
is when she is talking about being grateful for sounds. The first sounds she talks about are
generally thought of as appealing sounds like crickets and birds. She then goes on and describes
loud and unsettling sounds "Hammers, turbines, barking, squalls" (14). Very few people would
consider these pleasant sounds and many would avoid hearing them. They also seem to suggest a
low–income area that is perhaps near to construction or a factory. I do not know if the speaker is
from a place of poverty but even if she is not, this section appears to be referencing poverty and
poverty is reason to make someone unhappy. Exhaustion is another part of the speaker's life that
is that lead to the conclusion that the speaker was unhappy. This is when she talked about being
thankful for walking. She names all of these cool places to walk such as beaches and mountains.
She names places that allude to her having traveled all over the world and yet she describes her
own feet as tired. If one was to describe their adventures they might say after a long day of walking
they were tired but the way the speaker talks about her tired feet is not that they became tired from
walking but that they were always tired. Tiredness is often considered a symptom of depression.
The inability to find energy, even when one can travel all over the world would

Literature from then to today has been the most outstanding art that almost all enjoy from any
where around the world. Literature has various types that each one enjoys. There are short stories
that are small and concise stories of similarity to novels, novels that are longer versions of short
stories, plays or acts that have people play the characters of the written work, and finally we have
poetry the most short yet most difficult to understand. I find poetry one of the literary works I
prefer reading. In my opinion poetry will always be something I could relate to and problem
solve. There are so many mysteries that poetry include in such a small and concise literary work.
In many cases poetry will lead you to so much questions that all vary on your perspectives and
what you think and believe the poetic work consist of, what it all means all fall under what the
reader's point of view is. Just like any other literary...show more content...
Poets would be very creative in choosing the right words sort of like playing around with writing the
literary work yet it plays an important role in creating the poem. You would also notice that in
"Poetry," Moore also played around with words that are greatly used in many poems. However, it
may seem like a paradox because Moore stated that she dislikes poetry but produces poems. Making
the reader produce thoughts of why must the author say this and that, are good elements that make
poems their mysterious work itself. Some readers may dislike the difficulty in understanding the
literary work, some enjoy poems however, the mysteries gathered in the stanzas or lines all create an
excellent foundation to a good poem. In addition readers unravel so many interpretations of the
poem as well as the author and the reasons behind the production of the

Macbeth Explication
The "Tragedy of Macbeth" by William Shakespeare tells a tale of deceit, murder, and ambition,
beginning with a cutthroat rise to power, followed by calamitous downfall. At the start of the play,
Macbeth is a brave and loyal captain in King Duncan's army, but after three witches prophesize that
he himself will become the king of Scotland, and that those born of a friend, Banquo, will be king
after him, Macbeth is overtaken by ambition and gluttony. Instigated by his wife and his own lust for
power, he murders Duncan, assumes the throne, and subsequently sends mercenaries to kill Banquo's
sons. While awaiting battle, Macbeth addresses the death of his wife in Act V, scene 5. Throughout

The idea that: "Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player / That struts and frets his hour upon the
stage / And then is heard no more" (V.V. xxvii– xxix) conveys that life is something that lacks
substance, that it's an actor who only spends a short time on stage. This metaphor explains how
life is short and passes quickly. Finally, Macbeth refers to death as the last act of an awful play or
"...a tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury, / signifying nothing" (V.V. xxix
–xxx), demonstrating
the ending to a long journey down an existential path. Over the course of the tragedy of Macbeth,
Shakespeare uses various literary devices to bring to attention the importance of his diction, as well
as relate the speech to the common theme of death and life's worthlessness. Beyond the figurative
language mentioned above, there are elements that are significant on their own, specifically
foreshadowing, metaphors, repetition and alliteration. Shakespeare hints at an important upcoming
event using Macbeth's boastful attitude when he describes the walls surrounding his main character.
This element of foreshadowing allows for the reader to predict that something tragic and significant
will soon take place. As the speech progresses, the author continues to emphasize Macbeth's idea that
life is brief

Mentality In Macbeth
In the Shakespearian play, Macbeth, a story is told of a greatly admired and respected general who
in the drive of ambition deteriorates in moral character. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth is
shown to be brave and mentally stable but his mentality starts to decline when his guilt causes him to
be hysterical. Throughout the acts, the witches, the hallucinations, and his hunger for power has all
caused him to total madness. Macbeth's moral decline is further developed with the idea of light and
darkness. In the beginning of Act I, Macbeth is described to be a brave general, one who is well
admired and respected by his peers and King. In the first Act, a captain reports the outcome of the
war and says "But all's too weak; for brave Macbeth..."...show more content...
Macbeth's first hallucination occurs when he sees a dagger with blood and believes it to be real
until he realizes it is not real: "Is this a dagger which I see before me, The handle toward my hand?
Come, let me clutch thee. I have thee not, and yet I see thee still." (2.1.44–47). The dagger
foreshadows Macbeth's future path of blood and death. After Macbeth kills the king, he hears
voices say to him "Sleep no more! Macbeth does murder sleep" (2.2. 47–48). This shows the
beginning of Macbeth's eventual mental deterioration. After Macbeth takes the throne, unnatural
events occur in Scotland and these unnatural events occurred because the Elizabethan Great Chain
of Being was broken. This is another example of light and darkness. After Macbeth broke the Great
Chain of Being, light was obscured and darkness was ever–present. When the Chain is in order
everything is good and light is dominant but when the chain is broken darkness and evil rule.
Macbeth bought darkness to Scotland. This is the point where Macbeth's morality has been
wiped away completely as he becomes a murdering tyrant and does everything to secure his place
as king. In Act III , Macbeth planned to kill Banquo and his son, and he does not tell Lady
Macbeth nor does he hesitate to act out those murders. This shows that he no longer needs Lady
Macbeth and shows how far he is willing to go to have

Reflection Of A Short Story
I enjoy writing short stories because the activity allows me to express my creativity and speak my
mind. However, I often have trouble finishing compositions, and my English professors will often
tell me I need to improve my work. Recently, I wrote a short story titled "Unexpected" for a
fiction–writing class and made countless changes to the tale based on several guidelines. The
revisions to "Unexpected" have benefited my story, but I could have done more to improve it. My
original story served as an impromptu launching pad for the revisions, which expanded my work
into a more stable, detailed narrative. However, I probably should have asked for help from tutors
and my fiction professor, Jackie because they understand short stories...show more content...
But three methods of revisions helped me better understand the changes I made to my narrative.
First, I printed my original work and jotted down revisions based on 25 questions from a book I
study in fiction class, What If? Writing Exercises for Fiction Writers. These notes helped me add a
wide variety of details to my story. Next, I typed my new story and used a grammar check website
called PaperRater to improve the style of my tale. This aspect includes, of course, grammar, but
also transitional phrases (I am not sure if those are important in a short story) as well as
vocabulary. And eventually, I tweaked my composition after carefully reading my story to myself.
I learned that reading your own work aloud helps you further comprehend any revisions you should
make. As a result of following these revision guidelines, I improved my story dramatically; it more
than tripled the word count of my story to about one thousand words. Furthermore, I usually only
use PaperRater for revising fiction and nonfiction works I write for English classes. My new
technique of modifying my narratives have truly expanded my stories as well as my imagination.
But despite these accomplishments, I could have further improved my story. When I wrote a poetry
explication essay for nonfiction writing class, I did not just turn to PaperRater. I asked my
professor, Ben, for help writing the essay during his office hours. I wish I could have done

Essay #1: Poetry Explication
A poetry explication is a relatively short analysis that describes the possible meanings and
relationships of the words, images, and other small units that make up a poem. It is a line–by–line

beginning to end. Writing an explication is an effective way for a reader to connect a poem 's plot
and conflicts with its structural and literary features. Assignment:
Write a poetry explication of a poem you choose from the selection of poems found in our
textbook. These poems should be no less than 14 lines and not more than 35. You pick. Do not
research or go to other sources to learn about your poem. It is just between you and the poem.
Trust your own brain, and don?t let others think for you. Requirements:
This Poetry Explication should be 1000–1250 words. You are expected to display ?reflective

Importance Of Poetry For Students
Poetry as a Literary Tool to Foster Students' Identities
Poetry serves as a powerful literary tool to foster students' individual identities and creativity. As
Duncan–Andrade and Morrell (2002) argue, there are countless possibilities for educators to jump
outside of the box and create more powerful connections with traditional academic text. Poetry can
provide language practice in a context that is relaxing and comfortable for the students, a context
that is different to their everyday classroom routines. The process of creating a poem also provides
the students with opportunities to challenge beliefs about literacy and poetry–making (Smith, 2010).
Literary tools such as writing provide an opportunity for cultural groups to relabel their own
experiences and support in the multicultural understanding of literature. Moreover, poetry acts as a
unique vehicle for practice in oral language skill development, especially for English Language
learners (ELLs) (Hanauer, 2011). Poetry provides a safe space for students, challenges their
traditional academic practices, and allows them to explore and narrate their multicultural identities.
A Safe and Comfortable Space for Students
The inclusion of poetry in the classroom can support language practice in a comfortable and
encouraging environment. In the case of Katherine Keil, a high school teacher, a comfortable space
was also created outside of the classroom (Keil, 2005). She initiated an annual "Java Monkey"
coffeehouse where

Macbeth Act 1 Scene 2 Essay
Overall, event act 1, scene 2 affects the cynical mood of the story dramatically by implying King
Duncan's trust and faith in Macbeth. Towards the end of the story, the irony is the King Duncans
trust backfired and now Macbeth is a merciless ruler. The quote, "The victory fell on us," relates to
the play as a whole because the quote displays how Scotland won against the Norwegian army. This
affects the play because instead of focusing on the war, Macbeth can now focus on what he really
wants: power. In act 1, scene 2, King Duncan (Abby) is informed by the Captain (Kylie) and Ross
(Srijitha) that Scotland has won the the war. Malcolm (Natalie) is celebrating with the group. King
Duncan is also told of the now 'famous' Macbeth and crowns him Thane of Cawdor....show more

Malcolm is also standing towards the center of the stage because not only does this show
fathership, but also because he is supposed to inherit the throne from his father. Ross is kneeling
towards King Duncan to the side to show loyalty to the country, but also how Ross does not have
much power. Captain is standing near King Duncan because this shows the importance of
Captain because he is the one who tells King Duncan of Macbeth and the victory. "The victory
fell on us" is spoken by Ross, but the Captain is the one speaking the most to King Duncan in the
scene. King Duncan and Malcolm are wearing purple and crowns to show royalty and good use
of power. The captain is wearing white, to show innocence, with red blotches to show injury as
the result of the war and dedication to the country. Ross is wearing white as well to show
innocence. King Duncan is very awed that they won the war, but he is also praising and glorifying
Macbeth by having a joyful facial expression. His body is open to show welcomeness to Macbeth as
being a new power–holde, after the

Macbeth Analytical Essay
In an effort to achieve, it is often in literature that the protagonist learns to accept his or her currently
fortuitous circumstances and rather than ambitiously seek what he or she wants, the protagonist
acquires what they need. This is a way in which an author can teach a moral lesson about the ill fate
of those bridled by ambition, hubris, greed, etc., without being overtly sententious. Shakespeare,
whether by intention or coincidence, wrote in a similar sense in regards to some of his most famous
and renowned tragedies. Often his works reflect a sense of morality, though rather than the
protagonists realizing the mistakes, their flaws become fatal and only after their actions take their
grievous course do they acknowledge their misjudgements....show more content...
Hamlet, one of Shakespeare's most beloved protagonists, shares character traits with well crafted
villains. Though he is supposed to be a tragic hero, he wittingly and cruelly hurts the people close
to him in his despair and thirst for revenge. Towards the end of the play he claims he loved
Ophelia more than her own brother did, a brother who did not play with her emotions and use her
for his own gain and bloody goals. Even if Hamlet did truly love Ophelia, he manipulated and
viciously abused her feelings, trust, and confidence, something one would find in a
power–imbalanced relationship where one is a villain and the other a victim. His downfall,
though, is his play at madness. He chooses to donne a facade of insanity in order to take revenge
for his father's sake, but meanwhile compromises his authority and ability to be taken seriously.
Had he rather been subtle and not abrasively distance himself from every potential ally, perhaps he
would not have met such a gruesome end. His own actions and selfish willingness to do anything to
satisfy his own lust for revenge was the direct cause of his death. His brash murder of Polonius, his
alienation of Ophelia, his disturbing confrontation and aggression towards his mother all lead to his
death and the death of other innocent people. Again, Shakespeare has

Macbeth Comparative Essay
The Power Couple Macbeth Comparative Essay Word Count: 1147 In Western culture today, it is a
widely accepted fact that men and women have equal power in a marriage; whereas in Elizabethan
times, a woman was dominated by her husband and she would have very little control over her life.
The leading omnipotent couple in William Shakespeare's Macbeth have a compelling marriage with
a power dynamic that is beyond the boundaries set by society at the time in which he wrote the play.
The directors Roman Polanski and Rupert Goold in their film adaptations of Macbeth, use
contrasting paradigms of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth and the power between the two that result in two
fascinating interpretations of Shakespeare's original characters. By...show more content...
The light voice the actress speaks with in Lady Macbeth's bold soliloquies create a feeling that
she is more curious of the possibility of success than craving for power. Lady Macbeth uses her
feminine qualities to gain Macbeths trust and sympathy. In the banquet from act one, she is
nearly in tears when Macbeth tells her he will not kill the king. By wielding her most feminine
qualities she can successfully get Macbeth to do as she pleases. She becomes pitiful as her
strength and sanity crumble at an alarming rate leaving her extremely vulnerable and sensitive.
While working within the same text, Polanski and Goold each effectively express different ideas
of Lady Macbeth's femininity. In each film, the change of the relationship between Macbeth and
Lady Macbeth are essentially the same throughout the text, however Polanski and Goold use
different cinematic approaches to give each of their films a unique mood. Goold's militaristic, cold
and malicious setting creates a sinister mood featuring his hardened leading couple. One technique
used in Goold's film was the use of wardrobe. Lady Macbeth starts as a sultry temptress, dressed in
a stiff dark dress symbolizing the authority and control she has as she and Macbeth walk hand in
hand to the grand banquet in act one. As the film progresses Lady Macbeth is dressed in more
feminine clothing that expose her chest collar and

I have recently started to hear the phrase
I do not see color when people talk about race
Why do they only want to see the absence of color, rather than embrace it.
Do they not see the way sky turns grey on cloudy days, or how a rainbow peaks out when it rains a

I wonder do they even realize that they all see is black and white
Do they not hear their ignorance in their voice when they say that phrase?

What Does Poetry Mean To Me
Poetry to me means dedication to writing something that inspires me. Poetry can make me cry with
sadness or happiness. Love in a poem can change the meaning or the feelings. Dogs are my favorite
poem to read and to recite. The different kinds of feelings that poems can describe can change how
you look at life. Poetry can sometimes include different rhyming words and different meanings.
The word choices that I used can show what I am as a person. I love to write stories about nature and
how it can have a life–changing event that was done out of accident.
I can write a poem in a few minutes or even hours. Poems can get across many different kinds of
meanings. It changes the way you see poetry and the way you see the word. There are many hidden

Language Techniques Used In Macbeth
Shakespeare uses many language techniques, which tells us exactly what Macbeth, is thinking
throughout this act.
"Is this a dagger I see before me" – is rhetoric language, which emphasizes his amount of faith in
himself. This is the first line of the poem and it shows us the mental state of Macbeth as he is slowly
slipping into insanity.
Rhetoric language Is language designed to have a persuasive or impressive effect?
Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible to feeling as to sight? – This is also rhetoric language as Macbeth
is addressing the dagger without saying the word dagger.
The word Dagger is used throughout the poem. The dagger symbolizes blood and gore.

Analysis Of Perhaps By Vera Brittain
The poem Perhaps by Vera Brittain captivates, as well, it portrays being genuine sincere. The writer
reveals so much emotion and feeling with her words, which is clearly able to predict based upon the
poem. When read, this poem shows compassion as well as hidden sorrow in every stanza. The words
written in this poem perfectly align beautifully to make an extraordinary and insightful piece of
literature. Brittain is an exceptional writer and this shows all throughout the poem with her use of
punctuation, imagery, allegory, and many other literary aspects.
The astonishing poem, Perhaps by Vera Brittain is engaging and intuitive to the reader. interprets to
the reader through her writing how she feels when trying to accept the passing of loved ones,
specifically her fiance as to whom she wrote this for. The reader can interpret this by of the use of
the word Perhaps, which were in the first line of every stanza. Reading Perhaps and understanding
the way Brittain is with her words could remind readers of a loved one that might have passed
away, also reminding them of the way they have accepted their loved one's death or even how to.
The name of the poem has an exceedingly interesting relationship with the title. The title is
Perhaps and all throughout the poem it speaks of maybe things will go back to the way they were
before the someone they loved died. The author may have titled it this way to show the reader the
power of the word itself. Possibly even to show the word as a beacon of hope for others, instead of
them conceivably believing that the pain and sorrow they feel might never heal, this has appeared
many times in every part of the poem.
The text, particularly illustrates this in the third line of the poem when she writes, "And feel
once more I do not live in vain/Although bereft of you. (1916)" This line has a line break as a
result of the author trying to show the silence that is briefly followed by vain, has a purpose and
that purpose is to show grief in the tone of voice when spoken aloud. This specific type of line
break is a syntactic, considering it is the other complete clause and it ends with a comma. If it
didn't have a line break the sentence it would make (And feel once more I do not live

Explain The Key Ideas Of Macbeth
The key ideas of my appropriation for Macbeth would include power and ambition. This would
communicate the key ideas of shakespeare to the audience as many of his plays would consist of
tragedy and frequent death as the cost for something positive that would happen in this case it
would be that Macbeth sought out careless power without looking onto the consequences that
would ensue the near future being blinded by his own ambition and lust for power. These key ideas
are relayed in the original play as Macbeth's ambition was fueled by his wife Lady Macbeth though
in my own version of the play Macbeth Donahue has a self fueled ego(ambition) and lust for power
as shown once the opportunity to kill the Capo Di Tutti Capi of Chicago had revealed

Poetry Explication Essay
Poetry Explication
Language is a remarkable thing. It can convey every thought, feeling, and emotion with perfect
accuracy. Almost exclusively, language has taken awkward, unfit animals out of nature and made
them rulers over the earth and many of its elements. When used well, it has the power to change an
individual's view of the world, make someone believe they have seen something they have not, and
even more astonishingly, look inside one's self and see what exists. If language is mixed with the
tempo of music, something new arises; poetry is born. When words and ideas are set to a beat, they
can far more subtly convey concepts that would otherwise need to be explicitly stated and the poem
can be appreciated more as a whole,...show more content...
In my poem, I have used the same style, putting the word 'way' as the last word in the first and last
lines. Such an arrangement serves to connect the beginning of the poem to the end and imparts a
sense of cyclical occurrences–although Elizabeth can banish those who hope to dispose her, new
enemies will constantly arise. Using this structure as the framework for my own thoughts, I was able
to break away from the original meaning of the poem and form something quite different.
While composing my poem, I regularly went back to The Doubt of Future Foes to compare the
sensibilities of each line. At times, I found that unknowingly I would come up with something
quite similar to what was written in the original. An example of this is line 9 of The Doubt of
Future Foes. I wanted to express how I, like many children, strive to instill pride in my parents.
When I read line 9, I liked it so much that I included part of it in my own poem for its meaning,
and as a tribute to Elizabeth's style and careful selection of words. Since the title and first line are
so intertwined, I decided to remain faithful to their original structure, and hence, my wording is very
similar. Although the meaning for the word 'doubt' in the original poem is quite different from its
common usage today, I chose to keep it in the title to make up

Dichotomy In Macbeth
Shakespeare sheds light on the dichotomy of good and evil with the connection of death. The motif
of light and dark is included each time someone is killed. Lady Macbeth associates the dark with
evil and sees it as protection to her in this violent state (lighten up!), "Come, thick night... see not the
wound it makes, nor heaven peek through the blanket of the dark" (33). She believes that by being
concealed in the shadows of the night, there will be no punishments in the afterlife for her
uncivilized actions, alluding to the fear surrounding religion. "There's husbandry in heaven; their
candles are all out" (49). Macbeth could surpass feeling of guilt or knowing his own regret if his
conscience could be clouded by the darkness of the night.

Xanadu
Lines 1–5
The poem begins with a fanciful description of Kublai Khan 's capital
Xanadu, which Coleridge places near the river Alph, which passes through caverns before reaching
a dark or dead sea. Although the land is one of man–made "pleasure", there is a natural, "sacred"
river that runs past it.
The lines describing the river have a markedly different rhythm from the rest of the passage:[30]
This is notable because although Xanadu is a real place, there is no Alph river. It does not exist.
Coleridge made it up. This is interesting because he 's kind of openly saying that while Xanadu is
real, it 's a place of his imagination; Imagination is a key element or key idea for Romantic poetry –
this idea of recreating things in the mind and the artist 's imagination. So, he 's really calling
attention to that with this inclusion of this fictional river.
"Eden", was located in Abyssinia; Alpheus = the classical underground river. The Latin origin of
the word sacred has two meanings: sacer = 'holy ' or 'connected with a god of the underworld ', i.e.
'cursed '; the surroundings of the river perhaps suit the second meaning best: at least a considerable
stretch of the river runs underground, through caverns (caves etc.) of measureless, "superhuman"
dimensions, i.e. of expanses which man (human skill or the powers of the human mind) is not able
to "fathom" both in a literal and figurative sense. Its final destination is a place of extreme darkness
and indefinite depth (down

Explication Essay

  • 1. Formal Poetry Explication Formal Poetry Explication Essay This poem dramatizes the conflict between faith and realism, particularly how the speaker seems to believe that both are equally as important. The line "In the bleak midwinter" used to describe the speaker's faith because it is understatement for when Jesus was born. In the winter, "frosty wind [...] moans" (1) and " earth [stands] hard as iron [and] water [is] like as tone" (2). The first stanza literally describes the winter and the coldness surrounding it; however, the diction such as "long ago" (4), sets a story–telling kind of mood. Also, assonance, repetition of the "o" sound, helps develop the imagery of the wind moaning. Repetition of snow, "snow on snow" also builds the imagery of snow falling. Macbeth: Critical Thinking Questions This report offers critical thinking questions to assist writers in creating a descriptive paragraph on the two most complex characters in the play, Macbeth and Lady Macbeth. Internally, Macbeth is reluctant to think of murder as the solution to any of his problems, but with the coax of Lady Macbeth, he defies his morals and continues with the plan to assassinate Duncan. • 3. Poetry is often used as an outlet to express one's feelings or ideas. Sometimes it is possible to find out a person's mental state from reading their poetry. Violeta Parra was an artist in many senses including poetry. In her poem and song "Here's to Life", it appears that Parra is celebrating life but may hint at certain factors in her life such as racism, poverty, exhaustion, mixed emotions, and her love life that lead to her depression and impending suicide. An ironic tone is established in the poem by the speaker giving contradictions to the things she is grateful for. The first line of every stanza starts with the phrase "Thanks to the life that has given me so much" (1). This phrase alone seems to be genuinely grateful. The speaker...show more content... It is suggested that the speaker may not happy with her life and expresses that with an ironic tone is when she is talking about being grateful for sounds. The first sounds she talks about are generally thought of as appealing sounds like crickets and birds. She then goes on and describes loud and unsettling sounds "Hammers, turbines, barking, squalls" (14). Very few people would consider these pleasant sounds and many would avoid hearing them. They also seem to suggest a low–income area that is perhaps near to construction or a factory. I do not know if the speaker is from a place of poverty but even if she is not, this section appears to be referencing poverty and poverty is reason to make someone unhappy. Exhaustion is another part of the speaker's life that is that lead to the conclusion that the speaker was unhappy. This is when she talked about being thankful for walking. She names all of these cool places to walk such as beaches and mountains. She names places that allude to her having traveled all over the world and yet she describes her own feet as tired. If one was to describe their adventures they might say after a long day of walking they were tired but the way the speaker talks about her tired feet is not that they became tired from walking but that they were always tired. Tiredness is often considered a symptom of depression. The inability to find energy, even when one can travel all over the world would Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 4. Literature from then to today has been the most outstanding art that almost all enjoy from any where around the world. Literature has various types that each one enjoys. There are short stories that are small and concise stories of similarity to novels, novels that are longer versions of short stories, plays or acts that have people play the characters of the written work, and finally we have poetry the most short yet most difficult to understand. I find poetry one of the literary works I prefer reading. In my opinion poetry will always be something I could relate to and problem solve. There are so many mysteries that poetry include in such a small and concise literary work. In many cases poetry will lead you to so much questions that all vary on your perspectives and what you think and believe the poetic work consist of, what it all means all fall under what the reader's point of view is. Just like any other literary...show more content... Poets would be very creative in choosing the right words sort of like playing around with writing the literary work yet it plays an important role in creating the poem. You would also notice that in "Poetry," Moore also played around with words that are greatly used in many poems. However, it may seem like a paradox because Moore stated that she dislikes poetry but produces poems. Making the reader produce thoughts of why must the author say this and that, are good elements that make poems their mysterious work itself. Some readers may dislike the difficulty in understanding the literary work, some enjoy poems however, the mysteries gathered in the stanzas or lines all create an excellent foundation to a good poem. In addition readers unravel so many interpretations of the poem as well as the author and the reasons behind the production of the Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 5. Macbeth Explication Essay Matt Cuyler 12/17/17 F Block Macbeth Explication The "Tragedy of Macbeth" by William Shakespeare tells a tale of deceit, murder, and ambition, beginning with a cutthroat rise to power, followed by calamitous downfall. At the start of the play, Macbeth is a brave and loyal captain in King Duncan's army, but after three witches prophesize that he himself will become the king of Scotland, and that those born of a friend, Banquo, will be king after him, Macbeth is overtaken by ambition and gluttony. Instigated by his wife and his own lust for power, he murders Duncan, assumes the throne, and subsequently sends mercenaries to kill Banquo's sons. While awaiting battle, Macbeth addresses the death of his wife in Act V, scene 5. Throughout the...show more content... The idea that: "Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player / That struts and frets his hour upon the stage / And then is heard no more" (V.V. xxvii– xxix) conveys that life is something that lacks substance, that it's an actor who only spends a short time on stage. This metaphor explains how life is short and passes quickly. Finally, Macbeth refers to death as the last act of an awful play or "...a tale told by an idiot full of sound and fury, / signifying nothing" (V.V. xxix –xxx), demonstrating the ending to a long journey down an existential path. Over the course of the tragedy of Macbeth, Shakespeare uses various literary devices to bring to attention the importance of his diction, as well as relate the speech to the common theme of death and life's worthlessness. Beyond the figurative language mentioned above, there are elements that are significant on their own, specifically foreshadowing, metaphors, repetition and alliteration. Shakespeare hints at an important upcoming event using Macbeth's boastful attitude when he describes the walls surrounding his main character. This element of foreshadowing allows for the reader to predict that something tragic and significant will soon take place. As the speech progresses, the author continues to emphasize Macbeth's idea that life is brief Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 6. Mentality In Macbeth In the Shakespearian play, Macbeth, a story is told of a greatly admired and respected general who in the drive of ambition deteriorates in moral character. In the beginning of the play, Macbeth is shown to be brave and mentally stable but his mentality starts to decline when his guilt causes him to be hysterical. Throughout the acts, the witches, the hallucinations, and his hunger for power has all caused him to total madness. Macbeth's moral decline is further developed with the idea of light and darkness. In the beginning of Act I, Macbeth is described to be a brave general, one who is well admired and respected by his peers and King. In the first Act, a captain reports the outcome of the war and says "But all's too weak; for brave Macbeth..."...show more content... Macbeth's first hallucination occurs when he sees a dagger with blood and believes it to be real until he realizes it is not real: "Is this a dagger which I see before me, The handle toward my hand? Come, let me clutch thee. I have thee not, and yet I see thee still." (2.1.44–47). The dagger foreshadows Macbeth's future path of blood and death. After Macbeth kills the king, he hears voices say to him "Sleep no more! Macbeth does murder sleep" (2.2. 47–48). This shows the beginning of Macbeth's eventual mental deterioration. After Macbeth takes the throne, unnatural events occur in Scotland and these unnatural events occurred because the Elizabethan Great Chain of Being was broken. This is another example of light and darkness. After Macbeth broke the Great Chain of Being, light was obscured and darkness was ever–present. When the Chain is in order everything is good and light is dominant but when the chain is broken darkness and evil rule. Macbeth bought darkness to Scotland. This is the point where Macbeth's morality has been wiped away completely as he becomes a murdering tyrant and does everything to secure his place as king. In Act III , Macbeth planned to kill Banquo and his son, and he does not tell Lady Macbeth nor does he hesitate to act out those murders. This shows that he no longer needs Lady Macbeth and shows how far he is willing to go to have Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 7. Reflection Of A Short Story I enjoy writing short stories because the activity allows me to express my creativity and speak my mind. However, I often have trouble finishing compositions, and my English professors will often tell me I need to improve my work. Recently, I wrote a short story titled "Unexpected" for a fiction–writing class and made countless changes to the tale based on several guidelines. The revisions to "Unexpected" have benefited my story, but I could have done more to improve it. My original story served as an impromptu launching pad for the revisions, which expanded my work into a more stable, detailed narrative. However, I probably should have asked for help from tutors and my fiction professor, Jackie because they understand short stories...show more content... But three methods of revisions helped me better understand the changes I made to my narrative. First, I printed my original work and jotted down revisions based on 25 questions from a book I study in fiction class, What If? Writing Exercises for Fiction Writers. These notes helped me add a wide variety of details to my story. Next, I typed my new story and used a grammar check website called PaperRater to improve the style of my tale. This aspect includes, of course, grammar, but also transitional phrases (I am not sure if those are important in a short story) as well as vocabulary. And eventually, I tweaked my composition after carefully reading my story to myself. I learned that reading your own work aloud helps you further comprehend any revisions you should make. As a result of following these revision guidelines, I improved my story dramatically; it more than tripled the word count of my story to about one thousand words. Furthermore, I usually only use PaperRater for revising fiction and nonfiction works I write for English classes. My new technique of modifying my narratives have truly expanded my stories as well as my imagination. But despite these accomplishments, I could have further improved my story. When I wrote a poetry explication essay for nonfiction writing class, I did not just turn to PaperRater. I asked my professor, Ben, for help writing the essay during his office hours. • 9. Importance Of Poetry For Students Poetry as a Literary Tool to Foster Students' Identities Poetry serves as a powerful literary tool to foster students' individual identities and creativity. As Duncan–Andrade and Morrell (2002) argue, there are countless possibilities for educators to jump outside of the box and create more powerful connections with traditional academic text. Poetry can provide language practice in a context that is relaxing and comfortable for the students, a context that is different to their everyday classroom routines. The process of creating a poem also provides the students with opportunities to challenge beliefs about literacy and poetry–making (Smith, 2010). Literary tools such as writing provide an opportunity for cultural groups to relabel their own experiences and support in the multicultural understanding of literature. Moreover, poetry acts as a unique vehicle for practice in oral language skill development, especially for English Language learners (ELLs) (Hanauer, 2011). Poetry provides a safe space for students, challenges their traditional academic practices, and allows them to explore and narrate their multicultural identities. A Safe and Comfortable Space for Students The inclusion of poetry in the classroom can support language practice in a comfortable and encouraging environment. In the case of Katherine Keil, a high school teacher, a comfortable space was also created outside of the classroom (Keil, 2005). She initiated an annual "Java Monkey" coffeehouse where Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 10. Macbeth Act 1 Scene 2 Essay Overall, event act 1, scene 2 affects the cynical mood of the story dramatically by implying King Duncan's trust and faith in Macbeth. Towards the end of the story, the irony is the King Duncans trust backfired and now Macbeth is a merciless ruler. The quote, "The victory fell on us," relates to the play as a whole because the quote displays how Scotland won against the Norwegian army. This affects the play because instead of focusing on the war, Macbeth can now focus on what he really wants: power. In act 1, scene 2, King Duncan (Abby) is informed by the Captain (Kylie) and Ross (Srijitha) that Scotland has won the the war. Malcolm (Natalie) is celebrating with the group. King Duncan is also told of the now 'famous' Macbeth and crowns him Thane of Cawdor....show more content... Malcolm is also standing towards the center of the stage because not only does this show fathership, but also because he is supposed to inherit the throne from his father. Ross is kneeling towards King Duncan to the side to show loyalty to the country, but also how Ross does not have much power. Captain is standing near King Duncan because this shows the importance of Captain because he is the one who tells King Duncan of Macbeth and the victory. "The victory fell on us" is spoken by Ross, but the Captain is the one speaking the most to King Duncan in the scene. King Duncan and Malcolm are wearing purple and crowns to show royalty and good use of power. The captain is wearing white, to show innocence, with red blotches to show injury as the result of the war and dedication to the country. Ross is wearing white as well to show innocence. King Duncan is very awed that they won the war, but he is also praising and glorifying Macbeth by having a joyful facial expression. • 11. Macbeth Analytical Essay In an effort to achieve, it is often in literature that the protagonist learns to accept his or her currently fortuitous circumstances and rather than ambitiously seek what he or she wants, the protagonist acquires what they need. This is a way in which an author can teach a moral lesson about the ill fate of those bridled by ambition, hubris, greed, etc., without being overtly sententious. Shakespeare, whether by intention or coincidence, wrote in a similar sense in regards to some of his most famous and renowned tragedies. Often his works reflect a sense of morality, though rather than the protagonists realizing the mistakes, their flaws become fatal and only after their actions take their grievous course do they acknowledge their misjudgements....show more content... Hamlet, one of Shakespeare's most beloved protagonists, shares character traits with well crafted villains. Though he is supposed to be a tragic hero, he wittingly and cruelly hurts the people close to him in his despair and thirst for revenge. Towards the end of the play he claims he loved Ophelia more than her own brother did, a brother who did not play with her emotions and use her for his own gain and bloody goals. Even if Hamlet did truly love Ophelia, he manipulated and viciously abused her feelings, trust, and confidence, something one would find in a power–imbalanced relationship where one is a villain and the other a victim. His downfall, though, is his play at madness. He chooses to donne a facade of insanity in order to take revenge for his father's sake, but meanwhile compromises his authority and ability to be taken seriously. Had he rather been subtle and not abrasively distance himself from every potential ally, perhaps he would not have met such a gruesome end. His own actions and selfish willingness to do anything to satisfy his own lust for revenge was the direct cause of his death. His brash murder of Polonius, his alienation of Ophelia, his disturbing confrontation and aggression towards his mother all lead to his death and the death of other innocent people. Again, Shakespeare has Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 12. Macbeth Comparative Essay The Power Couple Macbeth Comparative Essay Word Count: 1147 In Western culture today, it is a widely accepted fact that men and women have equal power in a marriage; whereas in Elizabethan times, a woman was dominated by her husband and she would have very little control over her life. The leading omnipotent couple in William Shakespeare's Macbeth have a compelling marriage with a power dynamic that is beyond the boundaries set by society at the time in which he wrote the play. The directors Roman Polanski and Rupert Goold in their film adaptations of Macbeth, use contrasting paradigms of Macbeth, Lady Macbeth and the power between the two that result in two fascinating interpretations of Shakespeare's original characters. By...show more content... The light voice the actress speaks with in Lady Macbeth's bold soliloquies create a feeling that she is more curious of the possibility of success than craving for power. Lady Macbeth uses her feminine qualities to gain Macbeths trust and sympathy. In the banquet from act one, she is nearly in tears when Macbeth tells her he will not kill the king. By wielding her most feminine qualities she can successfully get Macbeth to do as she pleases. She becomes pitiful as her strength and sanity crumble at an alarming rate leaving her extremely vulnerable and sensitive. While working within the same text, Polanski and Goold each effectively express different ideas of Lady Macbeth's femininity. In each film, the change of the relationship between Macbeth and Lady Macbeth are essentially the same throughout the text, however Polanski and Goold use different cinematic approaches to give each of their films a unique mood. Goold's militaristic, cold and malicious setting creates a sinister mood featuring his hardened leading couple. One technique used in Goold's film was the use of wardrobe. Lady Macbeth starts as a sultry temptress, dressed in a stiff dark dress symbolizing the authority and control she has as she and Macbeth walk hand in hand to the grand banquet in act one. As the film progresses Lady Macbeth is dressed in more feminine clothing that expose her chest collar and Get more content on HelpWriting.net

  • 15. Language Techniques Used In Macbeth Shakespeare uses many language techniques, which tells us exactly what Macbeth, is thinking throughout this act. "Is this a dagger I see before me" – is rhetoric language, which emphasizes his amount of faith in himself. This is the first line of the poem and it shows us the mental state of Macbeth as he is slowly slipping into insanity. Rhetoric language Is language designed to have a persuasive or impressive effect? Art thou not, fatal vision, sensible to feeling as to sight? – This is also rhetoric language as Macbeth is addressing the dagger without saying the word dagger. • 16. Analysis Of Perhaps By Vera Brittain The poem Perhaps by Vera Brittain captivates, as well, it portrays being genuine sincere. The writer reveals so much emotion and feeling with her words, which is clearly able to predict based upon the poem. When read, this poem shows compassion as well as hidden sorrow in every stanza. The words written in this poem perfectly align beautifully to make an extraordinary and insightful piece of literature. Brittain is an exceptional writer and this shows all throughout the poem with her use of punctuation, imagery, allegory, and many other literary aspects. The astonishing poem, Perhaps by Vera Brittain is engaging and intuitive to the reader. interprets to the reader through her writing how she feels when trying to accept the passing of loved ones, specifically her fiance as to whom she wrote this for. The reader can interpret this by of the use of the word Perhaps, which were in the first line of every stanza. Reading Perhaps and understanding the way Brittain is with her words could remind readers of a loved one that might have passed away, also reminding them of the way they have accepted their loved one's death or even how to. The name of the poem has an exceedingly interesting relationship with the title. The title is Perhaps and all throughout the poem it speaks of maybe things will go back to the way they were before the someone they loved died. The author may have titled it this way to show the reader the power of the word itself. Possibly even to show the word as a beacon of hope for others, instead of them conceivably believing that the pain and sorrow they feel might never heal, this has appeared many times in every part of the poem. The text, particularly illustrates this in the third line of the poem when she writes, "And feel once more I do not live in vain/Although bereft of you. (1916)" This line has a line break as a result of the author trying to show the silence that is briefly followed by vain, has a purpose and that purpose is to show grief in the tone of voice when spoken aloud. This specific type of line break is a syntactic, considering it is the other complete clause and it ends with a comma. If it didn't have a line break the sentence it would make (And feel once more I do not live Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 17. Explain The Key Ideas Of Macbeth The key ideas of my appropriation for Macbeth would include power and ambition. This would communicate the key ideas of shakespeare to the audience as many of his plays would consist of tragedy and frequent death as the cost for something positive that would happen in this case it would be that Macbeth sought out careless power without looking onto the consequences that would ensue the near future being blinded by his own ambition and lust for power. These key ideas are relayed in the original play as Macbeth's ambition was fueled by his wife Lady Macbeth though in my own version of the play Macbeth Donahue has a self fueled ego(ambition) and lust for power as shown once the opportunity to kill the Capo Di Tutti Capi of Chicago had revealed Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 18. Poetry Explication Essay Poetry Explication Language is a remarkable thing. It can convey every thought, feeling, and emotion with perfect accuracy. Almost exclusively, language has taken awkward, unfit animals out of nature and made them rulers over the earth and many of its elements. When used well, it has the power to change an individual's view of the world, make someone believe they have seen something they have not, and even more astonishingly, look inside one's self and see what exists. If language is mixed with the tempo of music, something new arises; poetry is born. When words and ideas are set to a beat, they can far more subtly convey concepts that would otherwise need to be explicitly stated and the poem can be appreciated more as a whole,...show more content... In my poem, I have used the same style, putting the word 'way' as the last word in the first and last lines. Such an arrangement serves to connect the beginning of the poem to the end and imparts a sense of cyclical occurrences–although Elizabeth can banish those who hope to dispose her, new enemies will constantly arise. Using this structure as the framework for my own thoughts, I was able to break away from the original meaning of the poem and form something quite different. While composing my poem, I regularly went back to The Doubt of Future Foes to compare the sensibilities of each line. At times, I found that unknowingly I would come up with something quite similar to what was written in the original. An example of this is line 9 of The Doubt of Future Foes. I wanted to express how I, like many children, strive to instill pride in my parents. When I read line 9, I liked it so much that I included part of it in my own poem for its meaning, and as a tribute to Elizabeth's style and careful selection of words. Since the title and first line are so intertwined, I decided to remain faithful to their original structure, and hence, my wording is very similar. Although the meaning for the word 'doubt' in the original poem is quite different from its common usage today, I chose to keep it in the title to make up Get more content on HelpWriting.net
  • 19. Dichotomy In Macbeth Shakespeare sheds light on the dichotomy of good and evil with the connection of death. The motif of light and dark is included each time someone is killed. Lady Macbeth associates the dark with evil and sees it as protection to her in this violent state (lighten up!), "Come, thick night... see not the wound it makes, nor heaven peek through the blanket of the dark" (33). She believes that by being concealed in the shadows of the night, there will be no punishments in the afterlife for her uncivilized actions, alluding to the fear surrounding religion. "There's husbandry in heaven; their candles are all out" (49). Macbeth could surpass feeling of guilt or knowing his own regret if his conscience could be clouded by the darkness of the night. • 20. Xanadu Lines 1–5 The poem begins with a fanciful description of Kublai Khan 's capital Xanadu, which Coleridge places near the river Alph, which passes through caverns before reaching a dark or dead sea. Although the land is one of man–made "pleasure", there is a natural, "sacred" river that runs past it. The lines describing the river have a markedly different rhythm from the rest of the passage:[30] This is notable because although Xanadu is a real place, there is no Alph river. It does not exist. Coleridge made it up. This is interesting because he 's kind of openly saying that while Xanadu is real, it 's a place of his imagination; Imagination is a key element or key idea for Romantic poetry – this idea of recreating things in the mind and the artist 's imagination. So, he 's really calling attention to that with this inclusion of this fictional river. "Eden", was located in Abyssinia; Alpheus = the classical underground river. The Latin origin of the word sacred has two meanings: sacer = 'holy ' or 'connected with a god of the underworld ', i.e. 'cursed '; the surroundings of the river perhaps suit the second meaning best: at least a considerable stretch of the river runs underground, through caverns (caves etc.) of measureless, "superhuman" dimensions, i.e. of expanses which man (human skill or the powers of the human mind) is not able to "fathom" both in a literal and figurative sense. Its final destination is a place of extreme darkness and indefinite depth (down Get more content on HelpWriting.net
