CURRICULUM VITAE
EDUCATION
06/2007 Ă bo Akademi University, Turku, Finland
Ph.D. in Chemistry (with Minor Subject in Chemical Engineering)
â Thesis: «Hydrogenation of Vicinal Diketones over Cinchona Alkaloid Modified Pt Supported Catalysts»
â Advisors: Professor Reko Leino, Professor Dmitry Yu. Murzin
06/2002 Lomonosov Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia
M.Sc. in Chemistry
â M.Sc. Thesis: «Design and Synthesis of Glycoprotein IIb/IIIa Receptor Antagonists»
â Advisor: Professor Nikolay S. Zefirov
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
06/2009 â â Postdoctoral Fellow, Department of Chemical Engineering, University of California at Berkeley
current: With Professor Alex Katz, I am developing a synthesis and characterization of novel catalytic materials
from precursor metal cluster carbonyl and their derivatives. The resulting materials are used to create
solid catalysts with molecularly defined active site. Tuning properties of the active site is performed by
variation of calixarene-based phoshine ligands. Thermogravimetry, FT-IR evolved gas analysis, mass
spectrometry, TEM, ICP, chemisorption and physisorption analysis are used for materials
characterization. The performance of the catalysts will be tested in the gas phase continuous-flow
hydrogenation and hydroformylation of alkenes. Design and building of the reactor flow unit capable
of running a number of experiments including in-situ FT-IR study of reactive species adsorbed on the
catalyst surface are parts of my duties.
06/2008 â â Postdoctoral Fellow, Catalytic Research Center, Institute of Technical and Macromolecular
05/2009: Chemistry, RWTH Aachen, Germany
I have been involved in the investigation of the epoxides/carbon dioxide co-polymerization reaction.
Chemical fixation of CO2 into polymers is a topic of high importance and interest as it suggest a solution
to climate change problem. Our team under supervision of Professor Walter Leitner and Dr. Thomas
MĂŒller was selected as a winner for the BMS Champions Cup "Science for a Better Life." Also, I
participated in "Pathfinder Project," Molecular Science and Engineering (MSE) program. In collaboration
with Center for Electron Microscopy, RWTH Aachen University (Prof. Thomas Weirich) I followed the
restructuring processes of heterogeneous polymerization catalysts by in-situ TEM microscopy. Finally, I
pioneered the work on immortal ring-opening polymerization of cyclic carbonates catalyzed by colloidal
double metal cyanides (DMC) and by DMC supported on nanolamellar inorganic oxides.
07/2007 â â Magnus Ehrnrooth Foundation Postdoctoral Fellow, conjointly Laboratory of Industrial Chemistry
05/2008: and Laboratory of Organic Chemistry, Ă bo Akademi University, Finland
Under advisors Professor Dmitry Yu. Murzin and Professor Reko Leino, the first theoretical model
accessing the origin of diastereoselectivity in heterogeneous hydrogenation which allows predicting
the stereoselectivity on the quantitative level was developed. The model was successfully applied to
hydrogenation of chiral α-hydroxyketones over the Pt catalysts supported on inorganic oxides.
Geometry and energy for several adsorption modes of the model hydroxykotone as well as whole
reaction paths for hydrogenation were studied on the Pt(111) surface by density functional theory
(DFT). Theoretically obtained potential energy profiles for the studied hydrogenation mechanisms
were used to explain the experimentally observed selectivities.
2. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE (CONTD)
02/2003 â â Doctoral student and Teaching Assistant, Laboratory of Organic Chemistry,
06/2007: Ă bo Akademi University, Finland
Under advisors Professor Reko Leino and Professor Dmitry Yu. Murzin (Laboratory of Industrial
Chemistry, Ă bo Akademi University), I studied the enantioselective hydrogenation of vicinal diketones
over cinchona alkaloid modified platinum catalysts. Variations of the reactant and modifier structure,
kinetic experiments and modeling, dynamic NMR studies, investigation of the organic molecules
adsorption on the surface of metal catalysts by IR spectroscopic techniques, DFT investigation of the
ligands have been carried out in order to clarify the important structure-selectivity relationships
involved in enantiodifferentiation over modified solid catalysts.
02/1998 â â Undergraduate and Graduate Research Assistant, Laboratory of Organic Synthesis, Department of
01/2003: Chemistry, Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russia
In the laboratory of Professor Nikolay S. Zefirov, I utilized the 2-amino-thiazole core to constrain two
main recognition groups of arginine-glycine-aspartic acid tripeptide. A library of new peptidomimetics
using traditional synthetic chemistry approaches and parallel chemistry techniques was synthesized.
06/2001 â â Summer Intern, Institute of Organometallic Chemistry and Technology (GNIIHTEOS), Moscow
07/2001: I studied process control and intensification in the middle scale industrial production of Methazidium
(1,1'-Methylene-bis(2-isonicotinylhydrazine)).
