Dr Calzada will participate on 3rd May in St. Sebastian, Basque Country (Spain) in the roundtable entitled ‘Transforming Tourism from a Regional Perspective: Challenges, Visions, Ways Forward‘ at the University of Deusto. The event has been held by Ezkerraberri foundation and funded by Coppieters foundation. The conference and the roundtable will revolve around alternatives views forward on tourism and its consequences in localised in the European regional realm. Here is the programme and registration. Modern tourism is closely linked to development and encompasses growing number of new destinations. Tourism is the third largest socio-economic activity in the European Union (EU) and makes an important contribution to the EU’s gross national product and to employment. Despite the increasing socio-economic importance of tourism, in the European regional context, a set of recent studies involving many European regions has led to the identification of important problems related to the sustainable use of natural resources, innovation dynamics and specialization patterns, and the relations between tourism performance and regional sustainable development in Europe. A damaged environment, a diminished cultural community could undermine European regional tourism in the future Those facts evidence that tourism has played a part in causing the problems we are facing today while at the same time having the potential to significantly contribute to solutions. The tourism players – tourists, tourism businesses, but also governments promoting tourism development –therefore have a responsibility to do no harm and to ensure that people, the environment, and the climate are not negatively affected. Another Tourism is Needed! This Conference therefore aims to open up a reassessment of the process of tourism policy and planning. We are seeking, among other things, for a critical (re)examination of tourism development models, we want to consider how the increasing focus on sustainability might shape future tourism planning and policy making. https://www.igorcalzada.com/panelist-on-tourism-and-transformation-roundtable-in-st-sebastian-basque-country-spain3/
