Presentation at the Scholarly Communication Retreat, St. Michael's College, University of Toronto. Oct.6, 2015. This talk is a personal perspective on Open Access and what I see as the key impetus for engaging in open access practices. I highlight some recent innovations, both in terms of tools and modes of collaborative research enabled by OA. I also highlight recent developments in financial models in support of OA journal and monograph publishing.

Slides from a webinar for the Royal Society of Chemistry on 24th February 2016. See the URI below to access the full report from the RSC survey "The role of libraries in open access publishing": http://www.rsc.org/campaigns/m/lc/lc16013/open-access/ We often hear that we are in a transitional phase of open access publishing, but it is not always clear how we will reach a fully open access environment, what that will look like and what it means for scholarly research. This webinar will draw insights from a librarian survey we ran in 2015, discussing areas where librarians feel a lack of confidence and presenting technical and policy developments. Register to gain a deeper understanding of: • The historical and political context of scholarly publishing • Funder and other policy requirements for Open Access (e.g. HEFCE and RCUK in the UK, Horizon2020 in Europe and NIH is the USA) • Developing models of OA including “Gold”, “Green” and “hybrid” • Jisc support services for OA • Social media and OA – e.g. “Altmetrics” (alternative metrics) as potential indicators of impact beyond the traditional readership of scholarly material

Summary: The web changes over time, and significant reference rot inevitably occurs. Web archiving delivers only a 50% chance of success. So in addition to the original URI, the link should be augmented with temporal context to increase robustness.

Most of the literature related to creating an institutional repository program suggests starting small -- either with one department or a project such as electronic theses and dissertations. At Bucknell University, we took an entirely different approach in an attempt to get broader experience by working with a cross-section of members of the university community and multiple types of digital objects all in one shot. This initial collection was built around Bucknell's participation in Focus the Nation, a one-day national teach-in being held at colleges and universities, designed to raise awareness about environmental issues. The resulting archive includes video and slide shows from faculty presentations, digital images taken of students and faculty with exhibits, electronic copies of research posters, and other relevant materials. Join us to learn about our experiences, problems encountered, and success stories as we managed to get an institutional repository program off the ground in less than two months. Topics will include: faculty copyright issues, developing a license for submitting materials to a repository; video recording an event from a novice's perspective; working with video files; using an Akamai server; attempting to build a collection with other institutions; getting submissions from students; and Open Access 101 for faculty -- a.k.a., yes, it will be accessible on the Internet.

Mixin classes are helpful for developers to extend the models. Using these classes helps to modify fields, methods and other functionalities of models without directly changing the base models. This slide will show how to extend models using mixin classes in odoo 17.

Foster students' wonder and curiosity about infinity. The "mathematical concepts of the infinite can do much to engage and propel our thinking about God” Bradley & Howell, p. 56.

This slide will show how to set domains for a field in odoo 17. Domain is mainly used to select records from the models. It is possible to limit the number of records shown in the field by applying domain to a field, i.e. add some conditions for selecting limited records.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
