Neonatal Resuscitation Training Game is a 3D game-based simulated learning tool, targeted to healthcare professionals, that allows learning by trial-and-error in a risk-free environment, while keeping a high level of realism.
2. Objectives and Scenario
Through gameplay, Resuscitation Game integrates the present training program offering professionals a
new, involving and unique experience, while respecting training standards suggested by international
bodies.
In an immersive virtual environment, professionals can experiment working procedures in a realistic way,
however without risks, thanx to the protected environment. Moreover, the game is available anytime,
anywhere guaranteeing continuous training and saving time and expenditure.
* Effectiveness of e-simulation-based deliberate, distributed practice on the retention of knowledge and technical skills of resuscitation following structured neonatal resuscitation training (SGH, 2016).
A running study conducted since 2016 by Singapore General
Hospital (SGH) demonstrated that standard trainings enhance
participants’ competencies considerably in the short term, but
already after 3-5 months after the training, notions start to
degrade until they disappear completely after 8 months*.
For an efficient and constant update, ILCOR (International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation)
recommends since 2015 that all professionals involved in neonatal resuscitation attend training courses at
least once a year with a consequent significant raise of NHS costs and a drastic productivity reduction in
specialist departments.
3. Design Methodology
Our design methodology for the Resuscitation Game foresaw 3 cyclic co-design phases with:
• Medical Trainers: contents and scientific supervision;
• Professionals (doctors and nurses): needs, expectations,
motivational factors, usability and acceptance;
• Multidisciplinary team imaginary: (psychologists, game
designers, technical specialists, mathematicians) game
design and development
Resuscitation Game can be accessed by any PC
with a recent browser.
An immersive version for Oculus Rift is also
available.
4. Innovate: Resuscitation Game
The game consists of 2 parts:
Training Game: playable by professionals in a
variety of scenarios which can be customized by
the supervisor according to the training objective of
each single user. Each scenario represents a specific
clinical case.
Supervisor Station: from which the supervisor can
set specific scenarios for each user and monitor
results, choices and scores.
The game architecture allows to add AI algorithms to change difficulty levels according to each user’s
performance in the next versions.

5. Innovate: Resuscitation Game
In a virtual resuscitation theatre professionals have to apply
their competences and follow the game’s instructions to
simulate an intervention in different phases:
- Chose one of the neonatal scenarios/pathologies
- Receive the virtual patient history
- Create a team and prepare the instrumentation needed
- Assemble the instrumentation and verify that it is
operating correcty
- Preparing the patient
- Carry out resuscitation procedures
When the newborn’s considtions are stable the procedure is
completed.
During a de-briefing, professionals can analyse their results
with their supervisors, who access the «supervisor station».

7. Engage: global!
SGH Singapore, has a curricular training program involving yearly more than 2.000 professionals: doctors,
nurses, midwifes and responsibles for technical instrumentation. To validate the Resuscitation Game as
training instrument to be included in the official training program, SGH started a study foreseeing at least
80 users; more than 140 professionals (more than 7% of the entire population needing a yearly training)
adhered to the call, deciding spontaneously to self-evaluate themselves with the game and to invest their
own free time participating to this project.
In Italy the game was already presented to the Società Italiana di Neonatologia (SIN) during their XXIII
national congress in 2017.
8. Impact
Data shows an enhancement in the retention time of theoretical
concepts and of acquired practical competences.
Given this result, Singapore General Hospital planned to enlarge the
training offer to all professionals involved in neonatal
resuscitation calculating the ROI:
Target: 2.300 SGH staff yearly
Saved time: 16 hrs person/year
Average salary: S$ 28
tangible estimated saving: S$1,030,400/year
(>645.000€/year).
Further impact factors
- reduction of time spent by medical trainers in a classroom for trainings
- reduction of time dedicated to organisation and logistics
- enhancement of the training offer thanx to the increasing number of different scenarios
- enhancement of the practical competence level thanx to the simulations offered through the game
