ACADEMIC PROJECTS & INTERNSHIPS
Civil & Environmental Engineering department of
Florida State University,
Research assistant
2008-2009
MASTER’S PROJECT: Comparative study of biogas oxidation and emission from Springhill
landfill in northwest Florida
The Master’s Thesis Project was a continuity of the undergraduate thesis project It took place in
the department of civil and environmental engineering in Florida State University. This research
study was aiming at measuring the emission of methane (CH4) and the bacterial oxidation from
Springhill landfill in northwest Florida for a long period of time. Based on the results, the
performance of the landfill cover would be evaluated. The second objective of the study was to
make a correction of the oxidation component of the methane oxidation model developed at the
department of Civil engineering. That correction was included to fit the model to the dynamic field
variables. In a long term scale, further investigations and corrections of the model would be applied
and the latter would be used by engineers to estimate oxidation and emission from any landfill.
Modeling will take place of the expensive and non-practical measurement techniques.

UNDERGRADUATE THESIS PROJECT: Designing final covers for North African Landfills
( Water Balance Simulation )
This research study was aiming at assessing the feasibility of using modern landfills in north Africa
and it was sponsored by the American Fulbright program. Modern Landfills are known in USA of
using Evapo-Transpiration covers which are working with natural biological system in order to
mitigate both greenhouse gas emissions and percolation of water into waste. A water balance
simulation study was generated to simulate water content and temperature from different types of
landfill covers and different Mediterranean climates. This work provides engineers, and specialists
in solid waste management with simple tables and equations (for temperature and water content)
for different north African climates and different landfill covers as an attempt to reduce the
hazardous effects of open dumpsites such as air and soil pollution, and groundwater contamination
by choosing the most suitable covers for each climate.
PROJECT1:The production of Benzene from Hexane
Third year project in the engineering school. That project was a study of the production of benzene
from hexane. Material and thermal balance of the reaction were elaborated, sizing of different
equipments of the process
TRAINING in ENIG: Ozone absorption by water into a semi-continuous reactor
Second year training in the engineering school in the “Chemical Reactor and Process Control
“research unit.
The training was held in the chemical reactor and process control laboratory. An ozone generation
from oxygen reactor was used in the experiments. The ozone is then injected into a semi-continuous
reactor. The spectrophotometry technique was used to measure the concentration of
ozone into the samples taken from the reactor at different times. The ratio of absorption of ozone
into water is expressed into graphics.
PROJECT2: Simulation of the conversion ratio variability with the length of a Heterogeneous
Tubular Flow Reactor
Second year project in the engineering school. A theoretical study was accomplished combining
mathematical equations in order to evaluate the conversion ratio of the heterogonous reactor
(Tubular Flow Reactor) as function of its length. The mathematical equation is then included into
PASCAL model and solved. The variation of the conversion ratio is deduced.
TRAINING in BG,Tunisia: Natural gas dehydration and sweetening process
First year training in BG Hannibal plant.
