  2. 2. PREFACE  Background • From Family of Palmae (Arecaceae), Subfamily of Lepidocaryoideae • Consists of 516 Species, with 9 Genus • Spread on Tropical Countries Including Indonesia, Especially on the Region:  Jawa, Sumatera, Kalimantan, Sulawesi dan Irian Jaya.  Sulawesi; Kendari, Kolaka, Towuti, Donggala, Poso, Buol-Toli-Toli, Gorontalo Palopo, Buton dan Pegunungan Latimojong. 4. 4. • ECONOMICAL VALUE  Among one of 22 main economy source in  80 – 90% worldwide demands of raw material come from Indonesia  50 - 60% of the demands, sourced from Sulawesi Island,  Among the varieties in Sulawesi in Particular, 9-10 kind considered favourite, 15-24 kinds has not been explored  Absorbing human resources/ workers.  Could be used for many purposes  Prospective market opportunity  High economical value opportunity on diversification of material development and outcome CopyrightsofPIRNAS2015
  5. 5. ISSUES ON THE FIELD  Need standarditation on classification of varietis and standard quality of raw materials.  Quality of materials only considered from rattan pole morphology characteristics.  Knowledge on rattan characteristics, limited based on the morphology characters only.  Raw material processing quality need to be improved.  Product outcome need to be improved in terms of design, innovation and quality.  Limitation on study about rattan.  Rattan wicker works/ crafts hard to compete in international market.  Rattan cultivation is really important.  Supply and marketing chain of rattan material and product need to be improved.  Orientation of rattan product outcome only limited to furniture and crafts. 6. 6.  Research Institution and Technical Facility that are focused on rattan processing and development become an important necessity. PIRNas (Indonesia Rattan Innovation Center) CopyrightsofPIRNAS2015
