One step towards cleanliness
• Swachh Bharat Abhiyan (SBA) (or Swachh Bharat Mission (SBM) or
Clean India Mission in English) is a campaign in India that aims to
clean up the streets, roads and infrastructure of India's cities,
smaller towns, and rural areas. The objectives of Swachh Bharat
include eliminating open defecation through the construction of
household-owned and community-owned toilets and
establishing an accountable mechanism of monitoring toilet use.
15. • Run by the Government of India, the mission aims to achieve an
Open-Defecation Free (ODF) India by 2 October 2019, the 150th
anniversary of the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, by constructing 90
million toilets in rural India at a projected cost of ₹1.96 lakh crore
(US$30 billion).[1] The mission will also contribute to India
reaching Sustainable Development Goal Number 6 (SDG 6).
16. Social Issues;
We use them every day – at home, school, work,
restaurants, shopping malls – yet we seldom talk
about them. The silence around the issue of
toilets and sanitation has deadly consequences.
17. Global scenario
• Around one billion people in our world today face the indignity
of defecating in the open. A lack of clean and safe toilets at
schools leads to higher dropout among girls once they reach
puberty. Diarrhoeal diseases – a direct consequence of poor
sanitation – kill more children every year than AIDS, malaria and
measles combined.( Source ; World Toilet Org)
18. Our initiative on Bamboo Toilet
• To strengthen the 'Swachh Bharat' initiative announced by Prime
Minister Narendra Modi, South Asia Bamboo Foundation (SABF)
with support of Building Materials Technology & Promotion

toilets across the country on Bamboo Toilets construction .

There are two pits one of which is used at one time. When one pit becomes full then the other
pit is used. Both the pits are used but one at a time. After two years in the first pit the excreta
turns into bio-fertilizer which can be cleaned by anybody and this fertilizer can then be used in
fields and gardens for enhancing productivity. The minimum period of cleaning the pit is 2 years
the maximum is 40 years. ( Design/courtesy : SULABH SHAUCHALAYA MODEL).
