30. Obtaining
Interocclusal Records
There are several materials available that may
be used to make interocclusal records. There
are also different techniques and philosophies
for making these records. The material selected
should complement the particular technique used.
The technique suggested in this manual in one
method and Whip Mix does not imply that this is
the only correct method.
The following interocclusal records should be
utilized to relate the mandibular cast to the
maxillary mounting and to program the condylar
guidance of the articulator.
Centric Relation and/or Maximum Intercuspation

Left lateral www.indiandentalacademy.com
Protrusive (optional)
33. Manipulate the mandible into centric relation and slowly arc the
www.indiandentalacademy.com
mandible closed.
34. Instruct the patient to move his mandible forward, back, and squeeze. This
cycle should be repeated once a minute for a total of ten minutes. The patient
should be instructed to bite with only enough force to hole the leaf gauge in
position. During the ten minute period verify that posterior disocclusion is
www.indiandentalacademy.com
maintained.
36. Warm the wax record in water until the tooth-contacting edges are soft
www.indiandentalacademy.com
enough to offer no resistance.
37. Position the wax record against the maxillary posterior teeth. Do not press
against the teeth or you may www.indiandentalacademy.com
perforate the thin record.
38. Manipulate the mandible into centric relation and slowly arc the mandible
closed. The maxillary and mandibular posterior teeth will automatically create
www.indiandentalacademy.com
“cuspal indents” in the wax.
39. Remove and examine the centric
relation wax record.
Maintain position while
cooling the wax.

42. Apply interocclusal registration
material. Use enough material to
cover the occlusal surfaces and
incisal edges of the mandibular teeth.
Have patient close into a position of
maximum intercuspation.

of the fossa element with your thumb and rotate the locking tab backwards.
54. Set each condylar guide to 30° on the condylar inclination scale and tighten the
black clamp knob. Next set each progressive side shift guide to the 0° mark and

59. Position the brass mounting pin located on the outer edge of the upright of the
lower frame into the hole on the medial side of each earpiece. Be sure the earwww.indiandentalacademy.com
pieces are pressed all the way against the side of the lower frame.
60. With the earpieces correctly seated, tighten the center thumb screw to lock the
face-bow in place. If you’re using a metal face-bow you will need to tighten the
three thumbs screws on top of the face-bow.

65. Make sure the cast seats firmly into the record. Apply mounting stone to the
base of the cast and onto the mounting plate.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
66. Close the upper frame to contact the cross bar, bringing the mounting stone on
the two surfaces together. Do not use too thick a mix of mounting stone or
attempt to apply force whenwww.indiandentalacademy.com begun to set. Hold the upper

frame in position until the mounting stone has set.
67. It is not necessary that the mounting stone be smooth and all voids filled with the
first mix. Many clinicians prefer to utilize a second mix to fill the voids after the
www.indiandentalacademy.com
first mix has set.
72. Remove the face-bow from the patient. Next, unscrew the #8604 Locking Screw
on the cross bar to release the transfer assembly which holds the bite registration

from the face-bow.
73. Position the #8686 Support Bar onto the top of the transfer assembly and secure
in place with the same #8604 Locking Screw.

Remove the upper frame of the articulator from the lower frame and then remove
the incisal guide pin.
75. Place the #9176Q Transfer Base Assembly for the QuickMount magnetic
system on the articulator. Secure the Transfer Base Assembly to the magnet
www.indiandentalacademy.com
using the #28706 Face-Bow Fork Support.
76. Insert the vertical rod of the transfer assembly into the transfer base and lower it
until the bottom of the vertical rod contacts the transfer base. Tighten the #9184
www.indiandentalacademy.com
Clamp Screw so the vertical rod fits securely in the transfer base.
77. Ensure the mounting surfaces are clean before placing the mounting plates on
www.indiandentalacademy.com
the articulator.
78. Place the upper frame of the articulator onto the lower frame, so the bottom of
the metal boss now rest on the #8686 Support Bar. Engage the locking tabs to
secure the upper frame in position.

79. With the bite fork secured in place and supported with the #28706 Face-Bow
www.indiandentalacademy.com
Fork Support, place the maxillary cast into the bite registration.
80. Check for proper clearance. www.indiandentalacademy.com
You can now add mounting stone to upper cast
and mounting plate as described earlier.
82. The upper and lower frame are made parallel by aligning the top of the pin
boss with the dark line which completely encircles the pin. The pin should be
adjusted 3 to 5 millimeters above the zero mark to compensate for the
www.indiandentalacademy.com
thickness of the centric relation record used to mount the lower model.
83. With the locking tabs in the locked position and the side shift guides set to the
“0” mark, set the articulator upside down and place the interocclusal record on
the maxillary cast. Place the www.indiandentalacademy.comthe record and check for
mandibular cast onto
stability.
84. Place mounting stone onto the base of the cast and onto the mounting plate and
hinge the lower frame closed until the incisal guide pin meets the incisal guide
block. Make sure the condylar elements are seated flush against the posterior
www.indiandentalacademy.com
and superior walls of the condylar guides.
85. Once the stone has reached its initial set remove the material used to stabilize
www.indiandentalacademy.com
the cast.
86. Remove the interocclusal record. Loosen the incisal guide pin screw and make
www.indiandentalacademy.com
sure the upper and lower cast contact. Retighten the incisal guide pin screw.
87. Many clinicians use a second mix to clean up the mounting and give it a clean
and professional appearance. Make sure the incisal guide pin is positioned in
www.indiandentalacademy.com
the center of the incisal guide table.
88. Setting the Condylar Guidance
of the Articulator Using
Lateral Interocclusal Records
www.indiandentalacademy.com
89. After removing the CR or MI registration material, release the locking tabs on
www.indiandentalacademy.com
the right and left fossa elements.
90. Set both condylar guides to the 0° setting on the condylar inclination scale
and set the progressive side shift guides to their most open position. Firmly
tighten the left condylar guide locking screw and lightly secure the right condylar
www.indiandentalacademy.com
guide locking screw.
93. While lightly holding the articulator, gently seat the lower cast into the left lateral
www.indiandentalacademy.com
record and hold the cast in position.
94. Note: The cast should seat evenly into the left lateral record. If the posterior
teeth are raised out of the record the condylar inclination needs to be adjusted
www.indiandentalacademy.com
until the teeth are seated evenly in the record.
95. To set the inclination of the right condylar guide, carefully loosen the clamp
knob and rotate the guide until the teeth of the upper cast seat evenly in the
www.indiandentalacademy.com
lateral record.
96. Tighten the clamp knob to lock the guide into position.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
DO NOT USE EXCESSIVE PRESSURE when tightening the clamp knob.
97. Setting the Progressive
Side Shift of the Articulator
Using Lateral Interocclusal
Records
www.indiandentalacademy.com
98. To set the right progressive side shift guide, loosen the right side shift holding
screw and move the right side shift guide until it touches the side of the
www.indiandentalacademy.com
condylar element. Retighten the side shift screw.
99. After the right condylar guidance has been recorded, the condylar guidance
should be neutralized as previously described. Set the left condylar guidance
www.indiandentalacademy.com
using the right lateral excursion record.
100. Many wish to set the condylar
inclination of the articulator with
a protrusive record. To utilize
the protrusive record, first
neutralize the condylar inclination
and progressive side shift settings.
Place the protrusive record on the
inverted upper frame of the
articulator and gently seat the
lower cast into the protrusive
record.
Both condylar elements will have
moved away from the posterior
surfaces of their respective condylar guides.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
101. Using sight and touch, rotate the left
condylar guide until the teeth on the
left side of the upper cast seat evenly
into the protrusive record, then
tighten the #2432 Clamp Knob.
Record the reading and repeat the
procedure on the right side.
Note: The latereal records are used
to determine the progressive side shift settings.
www.indiandentalacademy.com
103. An acrylic custom incisal guide table may be used to make a permanent disocclusive record of a specificwww.indiandentalacademy.com
case or to prevent possible abrasion of the stone
casts during manipulation of the articulator.
104. The Dovetail Incisal Block is a convenient accessory which has been designed
so that a custom acrylic guide may be easily removed and can later be easily
www.indiandentalacademy.com
replaced.
107. Lubricate the rounded end of the incisal guide pin. Next, prepare the surface
www.indiandentalacademy.com
of the incisal guide table with 1-2 drops of self-curing acrylic monomer.
114. Move through all intermediate excursions between the lateral and protrusive
positions. Repeat the excursive movements until the acrylic has reached a firm
www.indiandentalacademy.com
stable consistency.
