1. 1. Smart Mobs and Cool Tools for Change Paul Schumann The Innovation Road Map
 2. 2. Smart Mobs

Smart mobs consist of people who are able to act in concert even if they don’t know each other.

Non zero sum games result in social structures with rich potential facilitating the growth of social complexity.

Creation of an augmented reality

Complexity

Emergence

Abundant resource commons

Resources

Smart Mobs (http://www.theinnovationroadmap.com/Magazine/Articles/SmartMobs.pdf)

Innovation Commons (http://innovationcommons.blogspot.com & http://www.innovationcommons.net)

 3. 3. General Observations on Cool Tools

The "Open Source" model of development is gaining acceptance

One of the first applications of this model is in nonprofits (it fits the logic)

"Open Source" applications are spreading (concept of forges)

Forges are being started for nonprofits (i.e. OrgForge.org)

"Open Source" software is fueling the development of nonprofit applications

The benchmark system for nonprofits is DeanSpace (www.deanspace.org), a highly successful, grass roots, fundraising and organizing system developed by volunteers for volunteers, for the Dean presidential campaign. It used "Open Source" software modules obtained from SourceForge. There is a lot of excitement and energy around this project. I believe it represents the precursor of highly evolved self-organizing systems of the future.

CivicSpace (www.civicspace.org) is replacing DeanSpace

This movement may be the precursor to the way work and education is done in the future.

Nonprofit web sites need to be organized around the various customers and how they use the web site, rather than around the functions of the organization.

A lot of "cool tools" are being developed, but there is little or no structure for how these tools interact with each other, or how social change occurs

Cool Tools for Change is a source of information and software (www.cooltoolsforchange.org)
