2. Project Objectives
• Increase North Vancouver Island acute care capacity to
meet the population’s growing and changing needs;
• Enhance safety and quality of care for all patients;
• Improve access to services for all North Vancouver Island
communities;
• Maximize staff and physician recruitment and retention
potential; and
• Achieve value for money by balancing capital requirements
with expected opportunities for increased productivity in
clinical operations and long-term maintenance
requirements.

3. A Long Journey…
• VIHA has been pursuing a replacement strategy
for the two acute care hospitals in Campbell River
and Comox Valley for more than seven years.
• Business Case for the agreed upon solution was
completed in December 2011.
• Government approval announced on April 26,
2012.
• Now the work shifts to procurement and
construction.

4. Guiding Principles
• Facility meet needs of North Island now and in the
future.
• Emphasis on evidence based design.
• Elder friendly, patient centred facility with
emphasis on a healing environment, and
consideration for the needs of family members and
Aboriginal people.
• Use of technology to achieve better health
outcomes.
• Both facilities will be similar in design.

5. Project Description
• Comox Valley acute care facility and supporting
infrastructure:
– approximately 29,000 m2
– 153 beds (2025/26 target)
– Services will include existing services at SJGH, plus
MRI, and some changes to Mental Health and
Addictions services (proposed to move some beds to
Campbell River facility)
– University of British Columbia (UBC) teaching space
– Growth potential for new programs and services

6. Comox Valley Site Benefits
• Located on two high volume arterial roads to
maximize ease of access for visitors and fit within
current road capacity.
• Site is level and suitable for elder friendly
philosophy.
• Size of site (13.3 acres) similar to original Crown
Isle location (15 acres).
• Site is close to future fire hall, and well serviced by
utilities.
• Strategic partnership with North Island College.

7. Project Schedule
• Rezoning the NIC and City lots
– Rezoning application to be submitted June 2012
– Public consultation anticipated June – September 2012
– Rezoning complete around October/November 2012
• Competitive selection process
– Design competition 2012 – 2013
– Construction activity start on site 2013
• Preparation of Comox Valley site for construction
– Hospital construction start late 2013 / early 2014
– Completion early 2017

• Design Guidelines
– For use in the design competition
• Community involvement process
– Open houses and information sessions
– Start in early June
• VIHA will work in partnership with City of
Courtenay staff to develop and deliver an
appropriate community engagement strategy
