EU Leading The Way In Smart Grids: Estimated 72% Of Residents Will Have A Smart Meter By 2020 Smart appliances can shut off in response to energy fluctuations Energy generated at off-peak times can be stored in batteries for later use Energy from small generators and solar panels can reduce overall demand on the grid Sensors detect fluctuations and disturbances, and can signal for areas to be isolated Source: A 2014 EU research project identified 20 well-developed smart cities that had ample data on their smart city projects.
  35. Smarter Transportation With Mobile Apps The future for smart city app development may be these data collection apps like these: Paris SoundCity by Inria measures users’ personal exposure to noise pollution and allows app creators to build a map of noise pollution for Paris. DansMaRue by Paris Numirique allows users to identify and report damaged infrastructure or cleanliness issues so that service teams can be easily deployed London Appyparking allows users to easily locate available parking spots in real- time and on-the-go. FixMyStreet is a platform connecting citizens with their council to report damaged or dirty streets. Amsterdam Tranzer allows users to pay for public transport on the go, making their trips more convenient. Helsinki MAAS Global identifies the optimal path for its users across a combination of public (trains, busses, bike shares) and private (taxis) transport options.

  37. Case Study: Centralized Heating & Cooling In Paris The Paris Urban Heating Company (CPCU) derives 39% of its energy through waste incinerators Upgrading its smart grid capabilities by incorporating innovative ICT products and latest generation smart metering. CLIMESPACE, Europe’s largest provided of centralized district cooling via a smart grid. Efficiencies enable 50% less carbon emissions and 65% less water usage than an equivalent pool of stand-alone units. Centralized Heating & Cooling Systems Systems Can Be Controlled From a Centralized Panel
  38. Case Study: Self-Driving Bus Service In Lyon Jean-Philippe Ksiazek/AFP/Getty Images “A driverless French car operating in city centers can become a reality as early as 2018.” The world’s first driverless bus service began carrying passengers in the French city of Lyon in September of 2016. The service consists of two electric minibuses with a capacity of 15 passengers each. They are not yet capable of maneuvering around other traffic, therefore their routes are near a tramway where other vehicles are not allowed. While this is a breakthrough in implementing automation in smart cities, the goal is to have driverless passenger cars seamlessly integrated all over the city.
