Tran, J, Main, L & Aisbett, B 2012, 'Curate, promote, network, mentor: using Web 2.0 tools to guide postgraduate students and support researchers in training', presented at the Deakin Teaching and Learning Conference 2012, 15-16 November 2012, Melbourne, Australia.
A significant challenge in researcher training and supervision is finding relevance in the oceans of information available to students and early career researchers. Web 2.0 collaboration and social curation tools may provide the vehicle for experienced and developing researchers alike, to learn and to teach each other to successfully ride the wave of information.
With the support of the Digital Toolkit project (School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences), the presenters have been teaching staff and students within the Centre for Exercise and Sports Science (C-ESS) to use Web 2.0 tools to advance their research training by:
- Curating teaching and research resources;
- Promoting published and ongoing research;
- Networking with researchers and industry professionals worldwide; and
- Cultivating mentor relationships with students, supervisors, and other researchers.
This showcase will examine how digital tools have built capacity and fostered a learning culture across these four areas. The presentation will explore the challenges of and major opportunities afforded by deeper professional engagement with these platforms.
