Communications and media foundations offers alternative route to specialized educational programs
1. Communications and Media Foundations Offers Alternative
Route To Specialized Educational Programs
Exciting programs such as Broadcasting and Film, Journalism, or Advertising and Marketing
Communication Management have admission requirements that not all applicants may
meet. For those students, there is an alternate route to receiving an acceptance letter. The
Communications and Media Foundations program is an undertaking to which students who
are not accepted into the above programs may receive an alternate offer. These students
must have completed an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or have
mature student status (19 years or older) as well as Grade 12 English C or U, or equivalent
(minimum grade required) or take the Centennial College English Skills Assessment for
Admission.
The media foundations communication program is used to give students a base on which to
stand for the rest of their education. As such, with guidance from creative media industry
professionals, students:
Use contemporary digital and social media production skills for creative exploration
and experimentation with contemporary digital and social media production tools
(including creating and maintaining a forum in social media networks using
rich media applications);
Develop communication skills, including: appropriate vocabulary,
terminology, basic numeracy and communicative strategies necessary in
the communications and media environment;
Develop fundamentals for success in communication and media fields,
through the practical application of skills;
Apply theoretical principles to produce practical, focused written
communications and media solutions; and write and present in basic
narrative formats for a variety of media platforms;
Research and describe media forms, audiences, platforms, and “traditional”
and non-traditional communication methods;
Examine one’s roles and responsibilities as a global citizen in personal and
professional life and also look at beliefs, values and behaviours that form individual
and community identities and the basis for respectful relationships;
Apply developed English language skills to a presentation portfolio;
Apply knowledge of communications and media workplaces, environments and
practices to develop their job search strategies and early career success strategies
The media education foundation in Toronto includes specific courses such as: Tools and
Processes for Communicators, Multimedia, Developing Communications Portfolio Skills,
Exploring Digital Culture, Introduction to Media Writing, College Communications and
others.
The compressed, two-semester delivery of the program requires students to ensure they
are attending all of their classes and completing all of their assignments to get the most out
of the offering.
