Editor's Notes
There’s really only 3 things I’m going to talk about today… a road map if you like of how to effectively start using some of these social networking platforms. I’ll try to reduce some confusion along the way and we’ll have plenty of time for questions at the end.I’ve had a real problem recently with some presentations on social networking tools… there seems to be a lot of talk still about why we should be using them and not so much on the ‘how’, so I built this presentation to hopefully address some of the how.I think we’ve all seen examples of why… would you agree? I’ll show you an example or two, but I’m really interested in the how for today.Oh… I’m also a little twitter heavy in this presentation. So… the roadmap. Get your web1.0 world sortedSocialise internally before going external Keep it simple. Simple for you and simple for your supportersIf people have questions along the way please feel free to shout out, I’ll do my best to answer what I can.
So the first step in the roadmap is a little introspective. It’s great to see excitement in an organisation about taking the steps into the social networking environment, but at the same time a little frustrating to see that so many of the basics still need to be addressed before even thinking about jumping in.
Silos. If there’s anything that I’ve learned from working with non-profits for the last 8 years, it’s that some of them have a silo mentality.Marketing doesn’t talk to finance, communications doesn’t talk to research, no-one wants to talk to the board.Who cares? An organisation who shares and cares internally can share and care externally. So step 2 in the roadmap is all about socialising and what that really means to your organisation.
Everything we talked about so far is really about internally in your organisation, time to discuss the outside world. No… before you ask, this is not MY desk.Step 3 is about simplification, making it simple to get involved, stay involved, and stay energised.
