Good Stuff Happens in 1:1 Meetings: Why you need them and how to do them well
General Paper
1.
2. Students are taught how to:
◦ Read Extensively
◦ Comprehend Clearly
◦ Think Critically
◦ Write Fluently
3. Read Extensively
The subject is meant to instil in students cultural literacy.
Reading extensively is however something students
think is ‘pointless’ or ‘uneconomical’.
Indeed, what you will actually use during the exams is
but a small part of the knowledge you would have
accumulated.
4. Comprehend Clearly
GP requires students to comprehend passages, articles,
concepts and issues well, whether they are found in Paper 2
passages in the exams or Paper 1 Essay questions.
Through comprehension and critical reading strategies,
students not only increase their accuracy but also increase
their speed while they are answering comprehension questions
in the exams.
5. Think Critically
This is something that most students struggle with.
GP is a subject that requires students to dig deeper into
issues and ask more questions instead of just answering
the given one.
6. Write Fluently
Fluency and personal style will help the examiner know
that the candidate is confident in the language.
A good command of the English language cannot be
faked and needs time to be developed.
