7. Visual Display & Demonstration
Additionally, you are required to bring to class three objects/visuals that relate to your
hobbies and you will demonstrate one. In selecting visuals for your three hobbies, you want
to make sure that they are visually pleasing to your audience members. It is important that
your audience members are able to see each visual.
A demonstration is showing your audience members “how to do” your hobby. It is part of the
“show and tell” method. Also, your demonstration will focus on just one of your hobbies for
only 30 seconds (or less). It can range from drawing a picture on the white board, reading an
excerpt from your favorite book or singing a verse from your favorite song. Keeping in mind,
you want to make the demonstration interesting for your audience members.

9. “For me, yoga is not just a workout --- it’s about working on yourself.” This quote
comes from a world renowned yogi, Mary Glover. Good afternoon class, my name is
Breanna Smith, and I agree with Mary’s statement. Yoga helps me to strengthen my mind
so that I can keep a positive attitude during stressful situations. Along with yoga, my
other hobbies help me to find my serenity and joy. Audience, the title of my speech is
“My Hobbies that Give Me Serenity and Joy”, My hobbies are running, working out,
and of course, yoga.
Before starting the hectic day that lies ahead, it’s always nice to go for a quick
run. You begin by stretching out your legs and torso, because pulling a muscle is no
joke, trust me. Once I’m all loosened up, I go outside to begin jogging. I’m just starting
out, I have my headphones in, and all I can concentrate on is the feeling of one foot
hitting the pavement after the other. Speeding up, I can feel the wind on my face and the
smells of nature are surrounding me. The freshly cut grass, the dew left from the
following night, and because I live near the ocean, the salt water on the cool morning
breeze. To clear my mind of everything going on in my life, I focus on my breathing; in
through my nose, out through my mouth. Before I know it, it’s time to start making my
way back home and getting ready to start the day.
So, when I need to take a break from running, you can find me working out
in the gym. There is nothing like hitting the gym hard after a busy day. As I pull into the
gym I remember, TODAY IS LEG DAY! Now me personally, I have mixed emotions
about this. I’m dreading it because for me, leg day is the hardest workout I do, but on the
other hand, I am excited because who doesn’t like building that booty?! First up, squats! I
do the first rep of 10 and everything is burning, my thighs, hamstrings and glutes. I don’t
give up though and I persevere through the pain. Up next are calf raises. Halfway through
my calves are cramping and I can feel them tightening up as I continue on. Kickbacks are
the last thing on my list for the workout today. I power through them and I feel myself
sweating and breathing heavy because they are not only working my hamstrings and
glutes, but they’re working cardio for my too. I’m letting go of any stress caused that day.
After a day of running or working out in the gym, it is time for me to calm
my body with yoga. As I walk into the studio, I can smell the lavender incents that the
9
10. teacher has lit. The aroma isn’t subtle, but it isn’t overpowering either. The smell
immediately starts to calm my mind and muscles. I roll my mat out and sit to start
stretching. Tonight’s class is Vinyasa and I’m super excited because it’s my favorite! I
like the Vinyasa classes because it’s a continuous movement. We start going through the
positions and I close my eyes to allow my body to just move freely and for my brain to
rest. We move closer to the end and the positions are becoming more relaxing. The pose
we end on is called “Child’s Pose”. I use this position to clear my head of all negativity.
Anything that has happened that day or recently that has bothered me or brought pain, I
push it out of my mind and in that single moment I am perfectly content. I enjoy this part
so much that it almost seems too soon whenever I hear the instructor say “Namaste” and
just like that, the class is over.
These three simple hobbies help me to keep my head clear and stress level to a
minimum. By starting my day running or working out after the stress has built up, ending
with yoga to put my body and soul at ease; I believe I have a pretty great system.
Running and working out are more than just wanting a better body, and yoga is more than
just stretching and breathing. These activities help me to reach my serenity. So, with that
being said, I want to end by saying thank you, and remember “We can be serene even in
the midst of calamities and, by our serenity, make others more tranquil.”
