Join us for this webinar to hear from leaders at colleges who have been actively promoting the development of OER on their campuses for one to two years. They will share steps for launching an OER initiative including engaging faculty and librarians, importance of administrator buy-in, and support from instructional design to ensure effective, accessible, and re-usable open courses. Bucks County Community College (PA) is engaged in the final year of a two-year, funded initiative to transition sections of eleven high-enrollment courses to use of OER and library resources that are free to students. The initiative brings together faculty course developers, faculty librarians, an instructional designer and a Universal Design for Learning (UDL) consultant to transform the entire course. Central Lakes College (MN) has approached OER adoption, course redesign, and the authoring of new OER materials through faculty participation in cross-disciplinary collaborative OER Learning Circles. The online learning circles provide interactive support to faculty as they work through each of three pathways in adopting, using, and authoring Open Educational Resources. When: Wed, Sept 13, at 11am PT/ 2pm ET Featured Speakers: Bill Hemmig, Dean, Learning Resources and Online Learning, Bucks County Community College Dr. Karen Pikula, Psychology faculty, Central Lakes College, Minnesota State OER Coordinator

Workshop at City University Learning and Teaching conference, 21st June 2017 This workshop will share best practice from other global practitioners on how the Echo360 system can transform the lecture experience for staff and students. By focusing on how this can improve student satisfaction, retention and outcomes, it also strongly relates to the other theme of ‘supporting student success’ The relevance of the lecture in mainstream education is now under greater scrutiny as institutions seek to make educational programmes more relevant to a new generation of discerning learners (JISC, 2016). When we teach in class, how do you know who is confused, who is bored, who hasn’t even bothered to attend, and perhaps more importantly, who has learnt anything? And how can we engage with learners beyond the classroom to stimulate inquiry, collaboration and feedback in a seamless educational experience? This workshop will demonstrate how one answer is to reinvent the lecture, by integrating powerful new video, engagement and analytics tools, whilst retaining the valued teacher-learner interaction in teaching spaces. The Echo360 active learning platform empowers learners to engage more fully with teachers and each other before, during and after class. This approach to teaching also equips instructors with vital feedback on how learners are progressing, with powerful engagement metrics giving staff rare insights into the teaching-learning dynamic of a lecture (Rienties & Toetenel, 2016). Evidence is now emerging that this mode of teaching can have a significant impact on critical learning measures, such as early warning of student failure (Samson, 2016), boosting retention (HEC, 2016), whilst increasing learning gain and exam scores (Montpetit, 2015). Students also value their ability to control the pace, place and mode of their learning (Gosper et al, 2008; Leadbeater et al, 2013), whilst receiving more immediate feedback on their progress (JISC, 2016). Together, these flexible pedagogical tools have the potential to transform learning in all modes of teaching and training, both in the class and beyond.

If we want to motivate and engage students to learn in ways that will be longer-lasting and more meaningful to them, we need to design rich learning experiences that facilitate this through flexible and adaptable activities and assignments. Learning management systems (aka walled gardens) provide teachers and learners a safe and controlled space for threaded discussions, storing grades, uploading assignments, posting content, communicating notices, and deploying some constructed assessment components like quizzes. However, learning management environments are limited in their abilities to engage students in deep learning and meaningful educational activities. To do so, requires instructors to move beyond the walled garden into a less organized and less controlled digital world. In this session, we will outline supportive teaching strategies and learning activities (facilitated by the digital environment) that promote higher levels of engagement for learning – and are accessible and relatively easy to implement using open practices and resources. This learning happens outside the walled garden and requires careful consideration and attention to care for the students and the learning they will embark upon. But where to start? There are so many options, tools, apps, platforms and parameters to consider when designing a more open and flexible learning experience. Using a collection of evidence-based principles of learning, we’ll outline how designing rich online learning experiences may be easier than you think. Participants will be exposed to 7 key learning principles and appropriate tools to use within and outside of learning systems. We'll share some of our favourite examples of aligned assignments and activities. We'll engage youin a discussion of other examples that might fit within the principles, gather ideas and share back with everyone. Come prepared to share your best examples of online learning outside the walled garden - learning out in the open! https://festivaloflearning2018.sched.com/event/Ddwf/venturing-beyond-the-walled-garden-building-online-learning-activities-outside-of-the-learning-management-system-that-allow-for-flexible-adaptable-and-meaningful-learning

How may we engage students in inquiry-led and problem-based learning through the use of technology? In this presentation we will consider how active learning principles can be applied to the design of blended learning courses, with digital tools employed to support active learning opportunities for our students. Through a presentation of case examples from the University of York (United Kingdom), we will consider how blended activities can encourage participants to engage in creative learning and problem-solving. An engagement model for active learning, derived from the case examples, is presented as a stimulus for a broader discussion on effective design approaches to support student-led inquiry and problem-solving activities.

In this presentation, I share the results I found from conducting a case study in a graduate educational learning technology course at a medium sized university in the southwest US. The purpose of this case study was to understand the meanings that graduate students assign to their experience with HyFlex design. The term HyFlex has its roots in two words: Hybrid – combines both online and face-to-face teaching and learning activities in a single course, and Flexible – students choose their mode of participation whether face-to-face, online, or both. Findings show four themes that capture the meanings the participating graduate students assigned to their experience with HyFlex design: accommodating students’ needs, increasing access to course content, differentiating instruction, and encouraging student control.
