3. Lesson 54.notebook January 03, 2013
Lesson 5.4:
*FYI...some rides at Six Flags have minimum and maximum heights for
riders...
must be at least 52 inches: h > 52
cannot be taller than 72 inches: h < 72
SO...this would be shown as: 52 < h < 72
This is called a COMPOUND INEQUALITY!
*A compound inequality containing and is only true if both inequalities
are true. This is called the intersection of the 2 graphs.
ie... x > 3 and x < 7 would be:
3
4. Lesson 54.notebook January 03, 2013
*A compound inequality containing or is only true if both inequalities are
true. This is called the union of the 2 graphs.
ie... x > 2 or x < 1 would be:
4

Lesson 5.4 examples:
Solve each compound inequality. Then graph the solution set.
A) 4 < p 8 and p 14 < 2
B) 4a + 7 > 31 or a < 5
