International Community Organisation of Sunderland
We work to improve the quality of life of minority ethnic groups
in the North East England. We want to change their negative im-
age in media, political debates as well as how they are seen by
local people. We want our community to live better and easier
on a daily basis. We also work to improve cooperation between
the different communities. We co-run “The Sustainable Sunder-
land Programme” which aims at understanding how much the
way we live our daily lives impact on the environment, and the
relationship between it and our quality of life and what we
spend for it. We are thinking about what we can do to help our
environment and improve our quality of life at the same time.
Pollution is a plague in a lot of countries and because of this, we
must be careful in our everyday life if we want to be healthy. If
you are interested in what can be done to prevent pollution why
not reading our newsletter?
We will provide you information about waste, the most and the

The most and least polluted countries
( more information on: www.care2.com—www.askushowto.com)
The lifetime of discarded waste: (www.consoglobe.com)
Toilet paper: from 2 weeks to a month
Newspaper: from 6 to 12 months
Cigarette butt: 1 year or 2
Chewing-gum: 5 years
Can: from 10 to 100 years
Plastic bag: 450 years
Glass: from 4 to 5000 years
A family of 4 produce 1,5 ton of waste every year, and a single person 350 kg.
This waste must be processed to reduce its lifetime. Do not throw anything on
the ground, because it has huge consequences; for instance one cigarette butt
can pollute 500 litres of water!

What can be done ? (www.npi.gov.au)
Commute smart walking or riding to work or the shops instead of driving
Choose a fuel-efficient vehicle
Save energy by turning off the television and make sure you flick the light
switch when you leave the room.
Buy energy- efficient appliances. Check the energy label when buying
new or second hand electrical appliances.
Use environmentally friendly cleaning products. Phosphorus in deter-
gents increases nutrient loads in rivers and cause excessive algal growth.
