Editor's Notes
Hi-Im Jess Research proposal based on VFNZ Background on topic, introduce you to change leader whom Im referring to & provide brief timeline of vfnz introduce to you research question, aims, methodology & process and briefly outline the existing relevant literature potential limitations of research which in turn highlights possible extensions and provide idea of potential value 1st though- personal relevance and background
well over half of my life dad worked with Vodafone. First assignment as expat manager in 1997 – Adelaide to Sydney Relocated to NZ 1998, experienced VF assistance setting up shop I worked within VFNZ call centres and in the later years in telco industry again for VFs largest retail provider. With my dad continued work and moving around with VF it is almost like… VF as part of the family; as such VF has played a large involvement in my family whilst I was growing up and continue to today.
Too young to comprehend – dad in trouble at workHe said he was just - Stirring things up 2002 world cup rugby game - started to understand what he meant Recent years -appeared in Journals - “maverick” , Ppl saying - dad revolutionised the telecommunications industry and how it hasn’t been the same since From this point forward I am going to refer to “my dad” as Grahame, otherwise it all seems a bit weird! (it’s abit of a different feeling when you are researching a family member!!)
The main question I have identified for this research is: “Why does the long term maintenance of strategic revolutionary change fail and what effect does removing the change leader have?”AIMS Gain understanding as to why the long term maintenance of strategic change failsProvide an perspective of strategic change from a long term orientation Provide a new perspective on the influence of leaders
Unable to find info directly related3 diff areas have been identified – form basis for understanding theoretically Change Management & LeadershipSuccession Planning & Human Resource Management Expatriation and International Talent Transferall identified areas which concerned this body of research -but all fields lack a consideration from a long term orientation nor do any focus on the domestic environment
Case Study Method – understanding of why events occurred in this specific enviroInductive Approach – use detailed observations to form basis of knowledgeCritical Incident TechniquePrimary - Semi structured interviewing Initially 2 groups;-current management team (ask if any iniatives installed by GM are still operating in VF today) -current line managers from marketing function (this function has been chosen as it was GM initial focus, line managers presumed to have the best understanding within the org) Secondary - shed some light on whom may be key agents in this process, for this reason it is difficult to estimate the exact numbers of respondents whom will be involved
Content analysis - Editing Approach – selecting meaningful parts from existing literature and using meaningful parts that stand out on their own – appropriate as trying to achieve understanding, exploration and as there is little knowledge Draw reference to existing supportive literature (3 areas identified) – develop kind of framework of relevant information Identify units of data Using inductive approach identify key categories /themesIdentify and explore connections and verify these by returning to text
Access of people whom have moved on from VFUse Vodafone connections, ask around people whom used to work with them & also possibly use networking sites like Facebook. Should be able to get adequate response Who I amPotential hazard but nature doesn’t insinuate that there is a need to be negative – always option to utilise another researcher if there is any area of particular concern Lack of differentiation between leader and leadership styles Grahame’s feedback –believes it is in fact not himself as the leader that has the greatest impact yet the style him implements. Research may in fact emphasise the importance of purposive leadership in the processdifficult to isolate these two factors- leadership style taken by one individual leader is incorporated in the consideration of their leadership of an organisation.
Extensions; Grahames leadership - Possibility to complete further study by multiple case studies, with similar leadership practises with same leader undertaken in Australia, Sweden and Czech Republic. Purposive approach - Other branches of VF brand, in conversations with Grahame, outlined as taking a purposive approach Value;Currently ignored in researchMNCs are not very good at expatriation but still try to do so – benefit could come from considering domestic market & taking LT orientation VF considered specifically – can understand what they did well and where improvements can be made
Provided bit of background on topic and my personal interest & given brief introduction to VFNZIntroduced research question, aims, methodology and general process for this proposalOutlined potential limitations leading to possible extensions and given idea of potential value of research Thanks - questions, comments, feedback??
