The Blueprint: Win Every Day to Deserve Victory
When a program has not been successful people within that program do not behave as winners.
The first thing that has to change for success to take hold is the mindset and attitude of everyone
involved in the program. Thoughts and habits must change. When this happens the foundation
will be laid for sustained success, a foundation that will create winners in life.
Winners think a certain way. Winners have certain beliefs that guide their lives. Winners carry
themselves with a humble confidence. Winners know life is about making the right choices on a
daily basis. Winners make the conscious choice to be Winners. We will choose to Win Every
Day and Make Sure We Deserve Victory.
Our program will be founded on three simple core values:
1. TELL THE TRUTH
A) Lies breakdown trust (no trust = no team)
B) Most important ability is dependability
2. BE A GENTLEMAN
A) Gentle = more concerned about another person’s feelings
than your own rights; and more concerned about
another person’s rights than you own feelings
B) Man
Resist passivity
Accept responsibility
Lead courageously
Work for a greater reward
3. LOVE YOUR BROTHER
A) Accept
Tolerate differences
B) Protect
Word and deed – what I say and do affects my brothers
Don’t embarrass the program
Hold your brother accountable
C) Serve
Random acts of kindness expecting nothing in return
Practice humility (not thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less)
D) F.A.M.I.L.Y.
Forget. About. Me. I. Love. You
The Non-Negotiables of a Championship Football Program
Unified Vision
Championship football programs are ones characterized by unified vision. This vision must be
shared from the top to the bottom and include stakeholders such as the superintendent, principal,
faculty, staff, students, and community. A vision leads to strategic planning. Implementation of
the plan and a willingness to see it through must be adhered to by all stakeholders.
Feeder System
Continuity is important to the lifeblood of the football program and the lifeblood of any program
is the players. Championship football programs have feeder systems set up that send players
through a unified network of football teams. Junior Pro players feed into the middle school and
middle school players feed into the high school. All three levels should be considered part of
one unified program. At the lower levels player enjoyment is key. As they progress player
enjoyment should always be at the forefront, but player development should begin to be a major
focus as well. Winning is not the foundation on which lower level football should be built.
Instead it should be built of the foundation of fun and development.
Coaches
High School programs need quality coaches to be successful. A commitment to get quality
coaches is necessary by the administration. Quality coaches come in many forms, but the
successful programs have career coaches that are teachers in the school system. Coaches need to
always have the players’ best interest at heart, be prepared, and constantly study the trends of the
game.
Standards
Standards must be set in all aspects of the program including attendance, grades, behavior,
attitude, weight room, and on-field performance. Once these standards are set they must be
adhered to at all times. Players don’t do what you expect, they do what you inspect. NO
EXCEPTIONS!!!
Character Education Curriculum
A program centered on core ethical values. It is imperative that young men get guidance in this
realm in our football program because otherwise they may not be exposed to it. Football helps
raise boys into young men. A coach can influence more people in a year than the average person
can in a lifetime. Football is a conduit to produce productive men, husbands, and fathers that our
society so desperately needs.
Athlete Development Program
A comprehensive program must be put in place to train the total athlete. It must focus on six key
areas: Team Building, Mental Toughness, Strength, Flexibility, Agility, and Speed. There must
be a year round commitment to this program.
Fundamentals
Football is a simple game. You must block, defeat blocks, and tackle better than the other team.
For this reason, fundamentals will be the focus of our program throughout the entire year. Many
times coaches neglect the fundamentals while getting caught up in x’s and o’s. This will not be
the case for us. We will be dedicated to the fundamentals of football and the consistent
repetition of them.
Components of Championship Play
Our belief is that the components of championship football will never change. Our schemes will
be simple enough to allow the players to be aggressive with minimal thinking. On offense, we
have to be able to run the ball and pass the ball. Balance is key. Balance to me means calling a
play when I want to- not when the defense dictates. We will be aggressive and make teams
defend the entire football field. Offensively, we must also eliminate turnovers. On defense, we
must defeat blocks, relentlessly pursue to the ball, and tackle when we get there. It is imperative
to limit big plays and make an offense drive the length of the field to score. It is our job to
defend the goal line- they only get points for touchdowns and field goals. We also want to focus
on taking the ball away from the offense. The team that wins the turnover battle usually wins the
game. Finally, we want to be sound and aggressive with our special teams. Field position is
huge in football and we want to win that battle by focusing on special teams, a unit many
programs often neglect.
Relationships
This great game is all about relationships. Without relationships winning means nothing. Wins
are made special by the people who participate in the accomplishment. It is our job as coaches to
foster the atmosphere of positive relationships. We must show our players we care for them
outside of football. It is okay for us to pat our kids on the back, give them a hug, and even tell
them we love them. These gestures go a long way in letting kids know we are not just their
football coach now, but that we will be their coach for life. These relationships go back to truth
and love. We must be honest with our players and show them tough love, but at the same time
be positive. We are to teach them discipline, accountability, responsibility, and dependability.
They will thank us for this later in life. This attitude should be shown to all players on the team
from the All-Star to the freshman scout team player. When players see we don’t discriminate in
who we build relationships with they will buy-in to what we are selling them as players.
Relationships are the most important thing we have on this earth!!!!
Win Every Day to Deserve Victory!!!!!!!!!
