SYNOPSIS NO: 1 READER TITLE: In The Cause Of Architecture
AUTHOR: Frank Lloyd Wright
In the book of “In the Cause of Architecture” Frank Lloyd Wright using the abstract way to describe
the amazing of the nature toward him such as “her wealth of suggestion is inexhaustible”. From
here we can see how important of the natural furnished to him. “Study nature, love nature, stay
close to nature. It will never fail you.” quotes from him. In the cause of architecture also mention
about “Simplicity and repose are qualities that measure the true value of any work of art.”
Excessive of love of details or ornaments maybe ruin the more fine things from the standpoint of
fine art. Wright stated decoration is dangerous unless we understand it thoroughly and good in a
scheme as a whole. He think decoration must intimately associate with buildings but many people
always just simply paste ornament to cover up the fault in design. Wright also set a Principles
because of the replication of architecture style in European and America. The principle is to help
the new generation people to develop their individuality of architect. He got say somethings about
the individuality, “If an architect create a structure based merely on the replication of a “style”, then
it is what it is a building with no soul or individuality.” He do not believe the uniformity of type which
has characterized the so called great “styles.” He believe that only when one individual forms the
concept, determine every detail only that will unity be secured which is the soul of the individual
work of art. He keep stresses the importance of the individuality of architects. Wright concludes
this essay with an expectation of the future, that “the work shall grow more truly simple; more
expressive with fewer lines, fewer forms; more articulate with less labor, more plastic, more fluent,
although more coherent; more organic.” In conclusions, I think Frank Lloyd Wright is really an
architect with strong individuality but like what he say “there should many styles of houses because
there are kinds of people and many differentiations.” I think maybe simplicity style is a great style
but for sure it is no suitable for everyone. However, I like that idea close with nature and building
design should harmonize with its surrounding because in this century many building just only
simply place in a place that destroy the spiritual integrity of the environment.
