My Name is James Bear.I intend to speak to you about spending on technology, or our future – and why.Note that this show is available online at www.montpelier.k12.nd.usWhen viewing this show, you can click on any menu item from this main page to access that particular slide.
We do not know what the world will look like in 20, 10, or 2 years. Our students are setting sail on a voyage the likes of which are uncertain. It takes confidence for students to be comfortable on this journey. When Columbus sailed the ocean blue in 1492, he was confident that he understood the principles of the globe, but he didn’t really know where he was going. We don’t know what our world will look like even two years from now.Our students, like Columbus, don’t really know where they are going. We need to give students the confidence they need to go, anyway, because there is no option of staying home.
A Study Conducted in 2004 by Owen and Demb States:With changing technology, our very culture is changing.Leadership and what constitutes leadership is changing. The people that know the most are the people in charge. We use technology every day… younger people know how to run everything best.Leaders will no longer be the elders.
In this presentation, I hope to help you understand better where the dollars we spend on technology are being spent.I also want to help you understand why it is necessary those dollars are spent. Finally, I want to help you understand why we need continue funding in the future.
Only by having rich technology in every classroom can teachers fully implement all of the following in their daily learning experiencesWord ProcessingInternet Research – and Training Teachers to Teach with the InternetStudent Accountability by Accessing Teacher Gradebooks in PowerSchoolEngaging Classroom Content
A word processor is a tool like a pencil is a tool and a chisel to inscribe in a rock is a tool. A word processor is the best of the three. Logic would seem to support this, but also a study done by Drowns in 1993 found:Students make more revisions when using word processors.Students write longer texts.Students produce neater and more error-free texts.Students have favorable attitudes toward word-processing.
Looking at this chart, I will point out all of the tested areas. I will discuss how achievement went up in almost every area.Data will be discussed line by line.
Comment on particular information in slide.PowerSchool and our school website are used to help students and parents see how well they are doing in classes, what homework has not been turned in, and to keep track of assignmentsRunnels, Thomas, and etc. in a study conducted in 2006 have found:Students feel more confident in classes if they are aware of progress.Parental involvement is greater in situations where parents can keep track of student progress.Feedback is much more immediate in situations where it is accessible online.
Comment on engagement in classroom on imageTeachers can use interactive white boards to get students actively involved in the classroom.Teachers can use stimulating videos and presentations to create effective classroom environments.Teachers can capture the attention of more of the students’ senses than ever possible before.A study done in 1995 (16 years ago) by Leidner and Jarvenpaa talks about negative aspects of technology in the classroom, but find in their research that students are much more engaged in classroom work through the implementation of technology.
Final Notes. Stress:The future is unknown.Students need to be prepared for the unknown. Our School will do its best to ensure that students are ready for the world which faces them provided we are allotted the tools necessary to do so.
