Huck’s Father - Pap
“Pap he hadn’t been seen for more than a
year, and that was comfortable for me; I
didn’t want to see him no more. He used to
always whale me when he was sober and
could get his hands on me; though I used to
take to the woods most of the time when he
was around” (chapter 3).
Pap’s Rant
Pap would get drunk and rant about how the
world was out to get him. He was anti-
government and a racist. Click the link and
study Pap’s Rant.
Pap’s Rant
American Dad...Not So Much!!
After reading a part of Pap’s rant and seeing
it analyzed in the New York Times, what do
you think was Twain’s purpose?
Let’s organize what we know...
What Do We Know?
Here is how Twain uses Pap
in his attempt to curb racism:
Action in the Text Effect on the Reader
Huck is a young, somewhat defenseless
boy
We care for him
Pap is violent and vulgar towards Huck We dislike him and want him gone
Pap rants on about the Government and
how much he hates people of color
Readers dislike him and hears him saying
things they may agree with
Huck runs away from Pap’s broken ways Reader embraces Huck’s goodness and
moves away from Pap’s ugliness
