The document describes the timekeeping features of the Apple Watch. It discusses how the Apple Watch keeps incredibly precise time, allows for extensive customization of watch faces with various designs and complications, and provides classic timekeeping functions like a stopwatch in new digital and analog formats. Key features mentioned include its ability to automatically adjust for time zones and daylight saving time, include complications for information like weather and stocks, and customize faces with different designs, colors, and detail levels.
4. An incredibly precise timepiece.
High‐quality watches have long been defined by their ability to keep unfailingly
accurate time, and Apple Watch is no exception. In conjunction with your iPhone,
it keeps time within 50 milliseconds of the definitive global time standard. It even
lets you customize your watch face to present time in a more meaningful,
personal context that’s relevant to your life and schedule.
5. Entirely new ways to stay in touch.
Apple Watch makes all the ways you’re used to communicating more convenient.
And because it sits right on your wrist, it can add a physical dimension to alerts and
notifications. For example, you’ll feel a gentle tap with each incoming message.
Apple Watch also lets you connect with your favorite people in fun, spontaneous
ways — like sending a tap, a sketch, or even your heartbeat.
6. A smarter way to look at fitness.
Apple Watch gives you a complete picture of your all‐day activity. The three rings of the Activity
app show your daily progress and help motivate you to sit less, move more, and get some
exercise. It’s also an advanced sports watch, giving you real‐time stats for a variety of the most
popular workouts. Over time, Apple Watch learns your activity and fitness levels. It uses that
information to improve the accuracy of your measurements and suggest personalized all‐day
activity goals. It even provides custom reminders to encourage you to achieve them.
7. There’s an Apple Watch for everyone.
A device you wear is vastly different from one you keep on a desk or carry in your
pocket. It’s more than a tool. It’s a true expression of your personal taste. So we
designed Apple Watch to reflect a wide range of styles and preferences. Because we
want you to love wearing it as much as you love using it.
9. Timekeeping
TIMEKEEPINGTIMEKEEPING
Make the most
of time.
Apple Watch is first and foremost
an incredibly accurate timepiece.
It does everything a watch
should, but in ways no other
watch ever has. It’s also
connected to your calendar and
your contacts. So in addition to
showing you the time, Apple
Watch actually understands
what time means to you. It helps
you be more productive and
efficient. So you get more out of
every moment.
10. Timekeeping
Learn more when
you lift your wrist.
Faces. Choose a face and customize
it however you like. Add more
functionality. Switch colors and see
even more detail, such as minutes,
seconds, and milliseconds.
Complications. An alarm, the
weather, when the sun rises and sets.
You can see information that’s
relevant to you and how you spend
your time.
Glances. A quick swipe shows what’s
important to you as you go through
the day: your next meeting, sports
scores, stocks, and even a map to
your next destination.
11. Timekeeping
Millions of ways to see time.
A device you wear is unlike one you put in your bag or pocket, because it makes a
bigger statement about your personal style. So Apple Watch faces are designed to be
extensively customizable, from how they look to what they do. When you combine all
the possible options, there are virtually endless ways to make Apple Watch your own.
12. Timekeeping
One watch. Many faces.
Most watches are designed with a single face. But Apple Watch comes with a range of
watch faces — from traditional to playful to artful to educational. You can change
them whenever you like, and explore many different ways to see time.
Chronograph. Modeled on the very
first analog stopwatches, this face
measures time in incredibly precise
increments. It uses two hands: one
for total time and a second for lap
times. A customizable timescale
measures long and short
time periods.
Color. A bold and clean design shows
the time in a range of bright colors
that you can change to suit your
mood. Use the Digital Crown to
choose a color. Keep things minimal
or add complications for even
more functionality.
Modular. The flexible grid design
easily accommodates the greatest
number of complications for a rich
view into your day ahead. When you
tap one, you’ll go right to the
corresponding app.

Utility. This practical face can be as
simple or as detailed as you’d like. It
has plenty of space to clearly display
three complications, including names
of meetings and calendar events.
Mickey Mouse. This beloved classic
is more animated than ever. As
Mickey’s arms move naturally around
the dial, he points to the hour and
minute and taps his foot
every second.
Simple. Start with an elegant,
minimalistic view that puts time front
and center. Then adjust the amount
of detail on the dial, from light to
dense. Even with complications, this
face maintains a clean and
refined design.

Motion. A butterfly flutters. A
jellyfish swims. A flower blooms.
Choose a theme, and each time you
raise your wrist you’ll see a different
species, color, and movement.
Solar. Based on your current location
and the time of day, you can see the
sun’s position in the sky — at dawn,
sunrise, solar noon, sunset, dusk, and
solar midnight. Follow the solar path
over time as you turn the
Digital Crown.
Astronomy. Working with
astrophysicists, we’ve created this
digital orrery. Turn the Digital Crown
to see the solar system and the exact
position of the planets, sun, and
moon as you move forward or go
back in time. View different scales: A
day by one rotation of the earth, a
month by moon phases, and a year
by the passage of planets around
the sun.
15. Timekeeping
Dial in every detail.
One Apple Watch face can have a multitude of looks. When you choose a face, you
can also choose the colors and indicate even more details of time, like minutes,
seconds, and milliseconds. So when you glance down at your wrist, you see time
precisely the way you like.
16. Timekeeping
Complications. Made simple.
Many watches include a few specialized functions — known in watchmaking as
complications — that go beyond telling the time. But Apple Watch comes with a full
range that can be added to most faces. Some complications are traditional, such as
moon phases or sunrises and sunsets. Some are more modern, like stock quotes,
weather reports, your next calendar event, and a daily activity tracker. And you can
tap on certain complications to get more information from their corresponding apps.

19. Timekeeping
One of the most
accurate watches
ever. And designed
to stay that way.
Working with iPhone, Apple Watch continually
checks against the definitive global time
standard with the same precision found in GPS
satellites. It’s so precise, the second hand (or
in Mickey’s case, foot) of every Apple
Watch across the world is in sync. When
daylight saving time begins, Apple Watch
simply changes to the new time. And if you
move from one time zone to another,
Apple Watch automatically adjusts. You never
once have to set the time yourself.

Timekeeping that goes beyond
hours, minutes, and seconds.
We all share the same time. But what happens during that time is different for everyone.
So Apple Watch doesn’t just keep accurate time. It allows you to see time in the ways
that are most meaningful — and useful — to you.
25. Timekeeping
An easier way to navigate
your day.
Apple Watch is seamlessly connected to your calendar, maps, and
reminders, so it can send notifications and alerts based around
your life and schedule. It keeps you on track and on time by
sending you quick notifications you can read, along with a tap you
can feel.

32. New Ways to Connect
Messages, calls, and mail.
Tailored for your wrist.
Apple Watch adds a new dimension to the way you communicate. In just a glance it shows
you who’s contacting you. It even gets your attention the way another person would — by
tapping you. There are subtle audio cues, too. The experience is discreet and nuanced, with
different types of notifications having their own unique character.
33. New Ways to Connect
Never miss a message.
You’ll know right away when someone sends you a
message, because a notification appears front and
center on Apple Watch. Hold up your wrist to read
the message, or lower your arm to dismiss it.
34. New Ways to Connect
Lots of ways to respond.
Apple Watch can predict what you want to say
from the context of your message and from the
ways you most often respond. Press the display,
and Apple Watch reveals preset options. Just
choose one and send it off. You can also create a
new response. Or skip words altogether by sharing
an animated emoji. A smiley face can move as it
laughs. Or it can stick out its tongue. You can even
change an emoji’s face with your finger to give it a
different mood. Send a thumbs‐up, a thumbs‐
down, and other animations, too.

Apple Watch is designed for quick interactions, but
sometimes you want to say more. So we made it
easy to transfer messages, calls, and email from
Apple Watch to iPhone, where you can pick up right
where you left off.
39. Health & Fitness
HEALTH & FITNESSHEALTH & FITNESS
Live a better day.
Fitness isn’t just about running,
biking, or hitting the gym. It’s also
about being active throughout the
day. So Apple Watch measures all the
ways you move, such as walking the
dog, taking the stairs, or playing with
your kids. It even keeps track of when
you stand up, and encourages you to
keep moving. Because it all counts.
And it all adds up.
40. Health & Fitness
Sit less. Move more.
Get some exercise.
The Activity app provides a simple visual snapshot of your daily
activity, with three rings telling you everything you need to
know. The Move ring shows how many active calories you’ve
burned. The Exercise ring shows how many minutes of brisk
activity you’ve completed. And the Stand ring shows how
often you’ve stood up to take a break from sitting. The goal?
Complete each ring every day.
41. Health & Fitness
STANDSTAND
Put some distance
between you and the
chair.
To help minimize your sedentary time throughout the
day, Apple Watch senses when you stand and move
just a bit and gives you credit when you do. And if
you’ve been sitting for almost an hour, it reminds you
to get up. You close the Stand ring when you’ve stood
up and moved around for at least one minute in 12
different hours during the day. It may sound like a
small thing, but sitting less can encourage you to be
more active and improve your health in big ways.
42. Health & Fitness
MOVEMOVE
Every move you
make is a step in the
right direction.
Each week, Apple Watch can suggest a new daily
Move goal for how many active calories to burn each
day, based on your recent history. You close the Move
ring when you meet your personal active calorie burn
goal for the day. You can also adjust the suggested
goal, making it higher or lower, until it feels just right
for you. By aiming for small improvements each week,
you’re more likely to make progress.
43. Health & Fitness
EXERCISEEXERCISE
Thirty minutes
at once, or a little
bit at a time.
Any activity performed at the level of a brisk walk or
above is considered exercise. And Apple Watch keeps
track of how much you do each day, even when it’s
not in the context of a dedicated workout. You close
the Exercise ring when you reach the globally
recommended 30 minutes of exercise per day.
And you don’t even have to do it all at once, which
means you’re more likely to fit it into your day.
44. Health & Fitness
Workout app. More detailed measurement
when you need it most.
During a dedicated cardio workout, the Workout app built into Apple Watch shows real‐time
stats like elapsed time, distance, calories, pace, and speed for a variety of the most popular
activities, including running, using the elliptical, and cycling — indoors or out. And since Apple
Watch is water resistant, you don't have to worry about getting sweat on it or working out in the
rain. Just choose the type of workout you’d like to do, and Apple Watch turns on the appropriate
sensors. You get a detailed summary, and your workout counts toward your Exercise ring
measurements for the day.
Goals. The Workout app always shows
your last and best workout for each
activity type and goal. You can repeat it,
increase it, or decrease it. Or choose a
different goal based on distance, time,
or how many calories you want to burn.
Progress Updates. During your workout,
Apple Watch provides timely
encouragement — by letting you know
when you’ve hit another mile or when
you’re halfway there, for instance — so
you can stay motivated to reach your
goals.
Workout Summary. When your
workout is finished, you’ll see how far
you’ve gone, your time, and how many
calories you’ve burned — all the stats
you need to know to track your progress
and reach new milestones.
45. Health & Fitness
Made to measure the
many ways you move.
Heart Rate Sensor. The custom
heart rate sensor in Apple Watch
detects your heart rate during
workouts, which helps
determine your intensity level,
and improves the accuracy of
your active calorie burn
measurements.
Wi‐Fi and GPS. Along with its
accelerometer, Apple Watch uses
Wi‐Fi and GPS on your iPhone to
more accurately measure
distance and speed during
workouts you do outside — like
walking, running, and cycling.
Accelerometer. The Apple Watch
accelerometer measures your
total body movement and steps to
calculate the calories you burn
during the activities you do
throughout the day. It measures
all kinds of physical movement,
from simply standing up to
running to catch the bus to playing
with your kids.
46. Health & Fitness
Apple Watch helps you make
progress an see results.
Whether you’re walking, running, cycling, or using the most popular fitness equipment,
Apple Watch knows how to keep you motivated during your workouts. It helps you set
goals, tracks your progress, alerts you when you reach milestones, and provides a complete
summary when you’re done. So you can match your last workout or beat your best one.
47. Health & Fitness
Personalized feedback keeps you
moving forward.
Apple Watch is designed with customizable coaching
reminders that will help you reach your Move,
Exercise, and Stand goals each day, and use your
success to motivate you to pursue new milestones.
Over time, Apple Watch learns about your activity. It
knows how active you are and uses this data to
suggest a daily Move goal for the week that is realistic
and achievable. You can adjust your Move goal up or
down to make it perfect for you. These weekly check‐
ins help you be more active and make progress in
manageable steps.
48. Health & Fitness
See how far you’ve gone.
And how far you’ve come.
Apple Watch shows your daily activity at a glance.
To see your progress and trends over longer
periods of time, go to the Activity app on your
iPhone. You can view your Activity rings,
workouts, and achievements by the day, week, or
month. And the Activity app can share your
activity and workout data with the Health app on
your iPhone, where it can be accessed by your
favorite third‐party health and fitness apps with
your permission.
49. Health & Fitness
Get a pat on the back,
right on the wrist.
When you reach your personal bests or hit milestones,
Apple Watch is quick to celebrate. You’ll get a special
badge for each achievement, which is then stored in
the Activity app on your iPhone. And that gives you
encouragement to keep going and keep improving.
50. Design
DESIGNDESIGN
There’s an
Apple Watch
for everyone.
Selecting a watch is very personal. As with
all things you wear, how it looks is at least
as important as what it does. So we set out
to make Apple Watch something you’ll
love to use every day. As well as something
you can’t wait to put on every morning.
51. Design
Two different-sized starting points.
Everyone’s style is different, as is everyone’s wrist. So Apple Watch
comes in two case sizes: 38mm and 42mm. Both of which can be set up
to work on either your left or your right wrist.
38mm(height) 42mm(height)
52. Design
Custom alloys engineered
for beauty and durability.
We created Apple Watch from custom alloys of stainless steel and aluminum — each
in two finishes — as well as unique formulations of 18‐karat yellow and rose gold.
All were specially developed not only to look great, but to stand up to the physical
demands of daily wear. Apple Watch is also water resistant, so you can wash your
hands or go out in the rain without a second thought.
54. Design
Bands as thoughtfully
designed as the watch itself.
A different band can really change the look of Apple Watch. So we created a full range
of them in a variety of materials. The grooves in each case are precision engineered
and CNC machined to ensure a perfect fit with any band. And beautifully designed
buckles and closures provide the perfect finishing touch.
57. Design
Many faces.
Millions of expressions.
Each watch comes with a variety of faces. From traditional designs. To playful
characters. To visualizations of time that are as educational as they are beautiful. Most
faces are extensively customizable — you can change colors, choose design elements,
and add functionality. So one Apple Watch can have literally millions of different
appearances. Including the one that’s precisely right for you.

Find your style in three
distinctive collections.
There are so many ways to make Apple Watch your own. To help you choose the
expression that suits you best, we’ve curated three collections of cases and bands that
we feel work particularly well together.
65. Craftsmanship
CHAFTSMANSHIPCHAFTSMANSHIP
Each material is an
achievement in itself
From the very beginning, Apple Watch was designed with a deep reverence
for the art of fine watchmaking. For the raw materials, every choice we made
was intended to not merely honor the traditions of the past, but to advance
them. From the custom gold alloys to the sapphire crystal, each element
comes together with an unrivaled level of care and precision, giving Apple
Watch a beauty that is both timeless and thoroughly modern.
66. Craftsmanship
Gold.
A more solid
18 karats.
Inspired by the inherent beauty of gold, we created
Apple Watch Edition in 18‐karat solid gold. Since it’s
a soft metal, susceptible to nicks and scratches, our
metallurgists engineered an entirely new alloy
that’s up to twice as hard as standard gold. This
allowed us to achieve the exact hues of yellow and
rose gold we envisioned, without compromising
on durability.
67. Craftsmanship
Stainless steel.
Not just refined.
Re-engineered.
The strength and beauty of stainless steel have long made it a favorite material in fine timepieces.
The stainless steel we created for Apple Watch is a modern expression of this tradition. We started
with an alloy known for its durability and corrosion resistance. Then we made it even stronger.
Through a specialized cold‐forging process, it becomes up to 80 percent harder. This same stainless
steel is used in the carefully engineered closures that allow Apple Watch to fit so precisely. And we
added a diamond‐like carbon layer to create the space black stainless steel case and matching band.
68. Craftsmanship
Aluminum.
Light, but no
lightweight.
For Apple Watch Sport, we started with 7000 Series
aluminum — the same used in competition bicycles. We
altered it to create a new alloy that’s just as light, yet even
more durable — it’s 60 percent stronger than most
aluminum, and one‐third the density of stainless steel. It
has a bright, lustrous color and a uniform structure free of
defects and impurities. Each case is machined and polished,
then blasted with microscopic zirconia beads to achieve a
consistent, satin texture. A special anodizing process
creates a hard, clear outer layer that helps protect against
scratches and corrosion.
70. Craftsmanship
Zirconia.
As functional as it is
flawless.
Because the back crystal is vital to the function of the
technology encased inside Apple Watch and Apple
Watch Edition, we chose zirconia, a type of ceramic, as
the primary material. It’s nonconductive, so the antenna
can perform without any interference from the crystal. It’s
also opaque, which eliminates cross‐talk between the
components of the heart rate sensor. The manufacturing
process begins by heating the zirconia at 2640 degrees
Fahrenheit for over 30 hours. Once it cools, we
incorporate the sapphire lenses of the sensor. Then we
polish the entire back crystal with a grinding stone to an
incredibly smooth, precise finish — with a surface
roughness of just 3 nanometers — so that it feels
comfortable next to your skin.
72. Craftsmanship
Sapphire.
Beautifully shields
Apple Watch from
the world.
Sapphire is the second‐hardest transparent substance
after diamond. That’s why we chose it to cover the
Apple Watch and Apple Watch Edition faces, and to make
the lenses of the heart rate sensor. Our sapphire crystal
comes from the highest‐quality boules. Only the purest,
clearest, and strongest sapphire crystal is harvested. To
ensure a precise fit for the case, the crystal is cut using a
diamond‐encrusted wire. To make room for an
integrated antenna, a tiny groove is laser‐ablated around
its perimeter. And to create the smoothest possible
finish, the crystal is polished with diamond‐
covered pellets.
74. Craftsmanship
Ion-X glass.
Strengthened at the
molecular level.
Ion‐X glass is the same material used in the windows of
space shuttles and high‐speed trains. This glass is thin and
light, yet surprisingly strong — five times stronger than
regular glass. Which made it the perfect choice for
Apple Watch Sport. There are many ways to strengthen
glass at the surface, but Ion‐X glass is hardened down to
its molecules. During the manufacturing process, the glass
is dipped in a 750‐degree molten potassium salt bath.
That’s when ion exchange takes place, with the smaller
sodium ions being removed from the glass and replaced
by larger potassium ions. As the glass cools, these larger
ions create an extremely hard surface layer that is
resistant to scratches and impact.
80. Technology
Digital Crown. A modern twist
on a traditional feature.
Every new product we’ve introduced has been defined by a unique input device. With Apple Watch, it’s the
Digital Crown. On mechanical watches, the crown has historically been used to set the time and date and to
wind the mainspring. We reimagined it as a versatile tool that answers the fundamental challenge of how to
magnify content on a small display. Pinching to zoom, as you do on iPhone, is impractical. But turning the
Digital Crown allows you to navigate nimbly and precisely, without obstructing your view. You can zoom in and
out of photos, quickly scroll through lists, input data, or press it like a button to return to the Home screen. The
Digital Crown is an integral part of the Apple Watch experience.
82. Technology
Not just a display,
but the focal point
of the whole
experience.
A Retina display is the primary surface for every
interaction with Apple Watch. And it’s clear why. The
incredibly high pixel density makes numbers and text
easy to read at a glance, even while you’re moving.
Images and graphics render with remarkable sharpness
and contrast, including finely detailed ones like the
rotation of a hair‐thin second hand on a watch face. And
the display is extremely energy efficient, critical for a
device you wear throughout the day. On most
Apple Watch models, the display is laminated to a
machined and polished single crystal of sapphire. Next
to diamond, it’s the hardest transparent material. On
watches in the Sport collection, protection is provided
by strengthened Ion‐X glass.
83. Technology
Sensitive enough to
tell a tap from a press.
In addition to recognizing touch, Apple Watch senses force,
adding a new dimension to the user interface. Force Touch
uses tiny electrodes around the flexible Retina display to
distinguish between a light tap and a deep press, and trigger
instant access to a range of contextually specific controls.
With Force Touch, pressing firmly on the screen brings up
additional controls in apps like Messages, Music, and
Calendar. It also lets you select different watch faces, pause
or end a workout, search an address in Maps, and more.
Force Touch is the most significant new sensing capability
since Multi-Touch.
84. Technology
Glances. Just the
right amount of
information, right
where you want it.
Since wristwatches were invented in the 19th century,
people have been glancing at them to check the time.
With Apple Watch, this simple, reflexive act allows you
to learn so much more. We optimized your favorite
apps for the wrist by developing Glances — scannable
summaries of the information you seek out most
frequently. To see them, you simply swipe up from your
watch face. In an instant, you can glimpse the weather
forecast, check out what’s next on your calendar, or find
your current location on a map. You can quickly swipe
through different Glances, or tap one to go directly to
its corresponding app for more details.
86. Technology
Siri. Closer and more useful than ever.
Having Siri with you at all times means you can access it that much more quickly and conveniently. And be even more
spontaneous with your requests. Simply raise your wrist and say “Hey Siri,” or press and hold the Digital Crown to dictate
messages, get turn‐by‐turn directions, or stay up to date on your events. You’ll get an instant response to your query.
Events. With Apple Watch always
close by, you can easily find out
what’s next in your day. Just use
your voice.
Turn‐by‐turn. Getting to your
destination is much easier with
Apple Watch. Just ask Siri for
directions and Maps will guide
the way.
Messages. You can send a message
without typing a single word. Simply
ask Siri to text a contact, and then
start dictating.
87. Technology
We found a way to
give technology a
more human touch.
Literally.
It’s called the Taptic Engine, a linear actuator inside Apple Watch
that produces haptic feedback. In less technical terms, it taps you
on the wrist whenever you receive an alert or notification, or press
down on the display. Combined with subtle audio cues from
the specially engineered speaker driver, the Taptic Engine creates
a discreet, sophisticated, and nuanced experience by engaging
more of your senses. It also enables some entirely new, intimate
ways for you to communicate with other Apple Watch wearers.
You can get someone’s attention with a gentle tap. Or even send
something as personal as your heartbeat.
88. Technology
With a custom
heart rate sensor,
it’s built to know
you better.
The wrist is a convenient area for collecting data about
your physical activity, a task Apple Watch is designed to
perform throughout the day. On the back of the case, a
ceramic cover with sapphire lenses1 protects a specially
designed sensor that uses infrared and visible‐light LEDs
and photodiodes to detect your heart rate during
workouts and when using the Heart Rate Glance. This
allows Apple Watch to provide a comprehensive picture
of your workouts and daily activity, suggest personal
activity goals, and reward you for reaching personal
fitness milestones.
89. Technology
With a custom
heart rate sensor,
it’s built to know
you better.
Heart Rate Sensor.
The custom heart rate
sensor in Apple Watch
can help gauge your
intensity during
workouts to improve
overall calorie tracking.
GPS.
Apple Watch uses the GPS
in your iPhone to help
measure the distance you
travel during the day or
during workouts that can’t
be measured in steps, such
as cycling.
Accelerometer.
The Apple Watch
accelerometer measures
total body movement,
counts your steps, and
calculates your calories
burned throughout
the day.
90. Technology
An entire computer
architecture on
a single chip.
Massive constraints have a way of inspiring interesting,
creative solutions. A prime example is the custom‐
designed chip at the heart of Apple Watch. No traditional
computer architecture could fit within such a confined
space. So we found a way to integrate many subsystems
into one remarkably compact module, which is then
completely encapsulated in resin to protect the
electronics from the elements, impact, and wear.
Configuring an entire computer system on a single chip is
an industry first and represents a singular feat of
engineering and miniaturization.
91. Technology
Charge it overnight.
Wear it all day.
You’ll want to use Apple Watch all day long. So we gave
it a battery that lasts up to 18 hours2 and made
charging it at the end of the day utterly effortless. In
fact, our goal was to make Apple Watch easy to charge
in the dark. Without looking. While being only partially
awake. We arrived at a solution that combines our
MagSafe technology with inductive charging. It’s a
completely sealed system free of exposed contacts.
And it’s very forgiving, requiring no precise alignment.
You simply hold the connector near the back of the
watch, where magnets cause it to snap into
place automatically.
Everyone will use Apple Watch differently, and different
features use varying amounts of battery life. So here
are some useful battery metrics.

Apple Watch is ideal for quick looks and fast
interactions. The apps it comes with have
been designed to take advantage of that.
There are apps you’re familiar with — like
Mail, Messages, and Maps — that work in
all-new ways. Apps that become even more
convenient on the wrist, like Siri, Music, and

Don’t worry about losing the
remote. It’s always right on
your wrist. On Apple TV you

Cold-forged stainless steel.
Formulated for strength and beauty.
How a product is used should determine the materials from which it’s made. Apple Watch is
designed to be worn during all your daily activities, from morning workouts to nights out.
That’s why we took a refined 316L stainless steel — an alloy that is remarkably corrosion
resistant — and cold forged it to make it up to 80 percent harder. We also reduce impurities
to achieve the mirror finish. An additional diamond‐like carbon (DLC) layer gives the space
black stainless steel its distinctive look.

For Apple Watch, we created a new alloy of 7000 Series aluminum that’s 60 percent stronger
than standard alloys. Yet it’s very light. Together with the Ion‐X glass covering the display, it
makes the Sport collection watches up to 30 percent lighter than our stainless steel models.
It’s also exceptionally pure, with a beautifully consistent appearance that’s difficult to achieve
with traditional aluminum alloys.
