1. What is the difference between
QUANTITATIVE data and QUALITATIVE
data?

         2. What are some examples of
         QUANTITATIVE data?
Homework Review:
What did you list as examples of using the
scientific method?

Choose 1 of your examples and explain how it
uses the scientific method.
Gathering QUANTITATIVE data
Mass
 Triple Beam Balance
Online Practice
 Let’s practice with the link online!
What is the mass below?
What is the mass below?
 Quick…

 Turn to your neighbor and share the things
that you wrote down under the information
    section for finding mass!
1.How is mass measured (what
is the tool and the unit?)

2.Explain the steps for
 measuring mass.
1.What is this tool called?

           B. C. D.

      A.

2.What are the parts called at
 each of the letters?
1. How do we find mass? (What
   are some tricks you found
when finding mass of the 6
   objects?)
2. How would you find the
   mass of a liquid without
   pouring it?
Volume
 Today we will measure volume. There are
    several ways to do this.
1. Liquid volumes
 To measure the volume of a liquid, pour
the liquid in a graduated cylinder and read
the volume…at the bottom of the
    meniscus
Liquid volumes
 Practice…
2. Volume of a regular solid
 For anything cubic, use the formula below:
       Volume = L x W x H

                                       8cm

                                              5cm
                             10cm
**using a ruler, the volume of a cube is measures in cm3
       **1cm3 = 1ml
3. Volume of an irregular solid
 Use the water displacement method
 Drop the solid into a liquid and measure how much
the liquid rises or how much spills out of the can

        Try this:
A rock dropped into 25ml of water
causes the water to rise to 29ml.
        What is the volume
        of the rock?
 Quick…

 Turn to your neighbor and share the things
that you wrote down under the information
section for each method of finding volume!
1. How do we find the volume
of a regular solid like a block?

2. What is the relationship
 between cm 3 and ml?
Green liquid
     Marble
      Rock
 Wooden block
Free reading book
    Toy Car
1. Describe in detail how you
 would go about finding the
 volume of a rock!
Article Analysis…

Please read the article provided
   and complete the sheet.
1.What is that piece of
 glassware called?

2.What is that piece of
 glassware called?

3.What is that piece of
 equipment called?
Common lab errors to avoid:
                    1. Use units for data

2. Read the question carefully; make sure your
          answer responds to the question

        3. Use details and supporting facts

             4. Write in complete sentences
Use the words associated with mass and volume to create a word web or
concept map to show how they are related. Some words are provided for you,
but you may add words. YOU MUST use at least the words provided.

 have about measuring?
