1. Lecture Notes for SM260 Three Week Course
Unit 1 (Week 1)
CAM Overview Powerpoint Presentation
A paper with questions about CAM will be handed out prior to the powerpoint, so students can
fill in the answers. This will be their take home study guide for the quiz in Unit 2 (Week 2).
Introductions will be given by each student at the end of the presentation. They will share
previous experiences they have had with CAM.
Unit 2 (Week 2)
The CAM quiz will be taken by each student based on their study guide questions. An overview
fact sheet will be handed out to each student. They will use it for the study guide to their stress
management quiz in week 3 (unit 3).
Chapter 1 in the designated class book is assigned. Students are encouraged to read extra
chapters and share their perception of it in class.
Finding a CAM local resource in their community is the last assignment for the students.
Unit 3 (Week 3)
The stress management quiz is given based on the study guide questions.
A handout of local resources names and websites is given to each student. Students will use the
room computer and projector to show their classmates the specific CAM local resource they
found. They can also bring in pamphlets or other advertisements for the resource as well.
Students share the knowledge they have gained from the class. They will tell their classmates
what CAM or stress management techniques they will use or not use in the future.
A wrap up of the course with questions from students will then take place.
The www.nccam.nih.gov will be written on the dry erase board for everyone to write down, in
order for them to use it as a resource in the future. I will wish the students the best of luck in the
future and encourage them to always do peer reviewed research.

prescription medication?
Do government websites have valid information about CAM practices and
research regarding it?
3. Stress
Unit 2 Handout
*Questions you will be graded on in Week 3*
What is stress?
In eastern philosophy it is known as an absence of inner peace. In Western
philosophy, it is a loss of emotional control. The current definition of stress is:
the inability to handle a perceived (imagined or real) threat to their mental,
emotional, physical or spiritual well-being. This results in a series of
physiological responses and adaptations made by the body in response.
Does the body know the difference between good stress and bad stress?
No, the body’s reaction/response is the same whether the demand is pleasure
or pain. The physiological response is the same: flight or fight. The amygdala
determines if the stimuli creating the response is dangerous or not. If it is
found to be a danger, the body will have a reaction in the nervous and
endocrine systems to fight the stimuli or run away (flight) to avoid pain.
Types of Stress
Eustress is the “good” stress. It could mean a job promotion, homework, or
starting a new relationship. It puts pressure on the body but is positive since
it results in a good outcome and motivates the person to do better.
Neustress is sensory stimuli with no consequential effect. This could be a
tsunami that happens in Japan. You hear of it on the news but it does not
affect you personally.
Distress is “bad” stress. It can be acute or chronic. If it is acute it is a stressor
that negatively impacts the body by releasing cortisone and other stress related
hormones. If it is chronic stress, this could mean the effect of stress could be
long term. For example, a breakup or house fire could cause stress long after
the actual event occurred.

For an extra 10 points, bring a local CAM resource you found in to share for Unit 3. It can be a
specific website, pamphlet, article, or directory listing for specific business, organization, or
system. You will need to describe its use to the class and if you would utilize it or not.
